Quote of the Day: Der Spiegel on Dana White
"White, a short, round-headed man wearing a skin-tight shirt and belt with a skull-shaped buckle, is the president of the UFC. He is 39, a former bouncer and a bellhop at a Boston hotel. He was found guilty of assault and, because he refused to pay the fine, wound up in prison. He became a boxing trainer and fled from the Mafia to Las Vegas, where he had grown up, and opened a boxing gym. White now owns a Range Rover, a Ferrari and two Mercedes, but he still has difficulty saying three sentences without the word "fuck" in at least one of them."
-- Maik Grossekathöfer, writer for Germany's largest newspaper Der Spiegel.
And White doesn't like how "Internet goofs" talk about him?

Is White really short? I thought he’s the same height as Randy Couture?

Neve rmind.
Blood, in the case of the UFC, is anything but a deterrent. In fact, blood and gore are part of the reason that UFC television viewership has been growing so rapidly.
The writer is obviously an ignoramus tasked to write something he knows nothing about.

“What makes Ultimate Fighting so brilliant is the fact that everyone gets what it’s about immediately: two guys beating each other up,” he says, rubbing his hands together and cracking his knuckles.
The he would be Lorenzo.

That is funny!
While anyone would like the President of their company to be able to speak without saying the word “fuck” constantly, you cannot argue with his results. In my mind, these are easily overlookable given his body of work.

I like to think Dana would give a hearty laugh and say “I don’t give a fuck” upon reading this.
Also, you have to remember that all Germans are Dirk Nowitzki, so of course Dana White looks short to them.

The UFC people in Germany are really happy with the article. You have to compare this to the initial reactions of Americans to the sport, not the way it is seen now. Compared to all the “human cockfighting” stuff, this is tame. The media there has basically no exposure to this, it will take a lot of time.

Let’s see how long they’re happy with this sort of coverage.

This article reminds me of something reportedly from The Onion:
Although detractors decry it as a brutal, bloody form of human cockfighting, aficionados know it is a brutal, bloody, totally fucking awesome form of human cockfighting.
There are some highlights in the article for the UFC, including having Ultimate Fighting as the sport itself:
Men like Couture are what make Ultimate Fighting so unusual and set it apart from boxing… Many regard boxing as a corrupt sport but the UFC is different. “Our sport is honest,” says Dana White. And Ultimate Fighting, he adds, is safer than boxing.

I heard Dana was thinking about signing David Hasselhoff to fight Anderson Silva in Germany.
Germans love David Hasselhoff.

People generally go easier on White because they like his product. If they felt his product was failing, then they would use his persona against him.
This is pretty typical.
If White was the President of EliteXC, people would make fun of him left and right, but since he is the industry leader, then somehow many of his actions are excusable. Very interesting.

Anybody know what the defamation laws in Germany are like?
If somebody said I did prison time I’d be on the horn to my lawyer. Guys with a Range Rover and Ferrari can afford that type of service.

Eh. If he cared that much then somebody makes a call to the paper and they issue a correction. No lawsuit.
Plus, the difference between prison and jail in real life may be significant but to the average person who has never done time, it is trivial. Point being, the amount of damage actual suffered by White from that comment (close to none since it is an issue of semantics) would not be worth paying a lawyer for.

While all those facts may be true of White, let’s also add “largely responsible for the success of the most awesome fucking sport ever” and self-made millionaire. Somebody has to play devil’s advocate.

Always good for people under the eye of the Nevada Gaming Commission to have a known associate and business partner admitting to or being reported (I can’t really tell from a 2 second scan of the exerpts if this is an interview or "bio") as having done time in prison (i.e. felon) and being a former Mafia member.

Running from the mafia isn’t being a member of the mafia.

That’s right. I bet it’s probably a pretty exciting life experience. How many movies premises start off with somebody running from the mob? Totally awesome.

Hey, it takes a Dana White to keep these PRIMA DONNA FIGHTERS IN LINE, this guy is real and does’nt put up with the BULLSHIT. He is a PROVEN PRFESSIONAL, and the Mafia thing is bullshit, also. Just admit it, everyone man in the world wishes they were Dana White, but all losers want to do is bitch, because their life is a fucking mess.
