Quote of the Day 2: Couture Gameplans Fight With Lesnar

C_vs_l_medium

"I’m excited, it’s been a great camp. I’m coming to the end of it — it’s been a very mixed camp.

"I’ve had a few big guys in pushing me and I feel like I’m ready to go. I feel my peak is close and I feel comfortable.

"He’s a big, strong athlete who moves well for a guy of his size.

"Technique-wise, where he’s at — I’ve been there myself. He’s a wrestler making the transition and trying to learn all the other skills to go with his wrestling background.

"He’s getting by with his wrestling background and it’s my job to exploit those other areas where he’s not as sharp as he should be yet.

"I’ll have to force him into those areas and make him strike, put him on his back, make him deal with submissions and fight off of his back.

"They’re the areas that wrestlers tend to be weak at when they first start out in this sport. I think it’ll go well.

"Obviously there are some things to work out for — he’s a 275lb guy who moves pretty well and I don’t intend hanging around underneath him, that’s for sure!"

-- Randy Couture, UFC Heavyweight champion, who is set to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 on November 15th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

p.s. To The Sun: Randy is 45, not 41.

Randy is coming into this fight as the underdog. I can’t wait to see how he puts Brock on his back.

That may only mean he’s the betting underdog.

You mean, as opposed to the cartoon hero?

Is there any way other than

landing a sub, for Randy to win this fight? If Brock catches him with the right he landed on Herring I am not sure Randy will be able to stay in the ring. I am a huge Randy fan, but I think is an extremely bad matchup for him.

Outbox him like he did Sylvia. It’s not like Lesnar’s standup is good or anything.

by zeroword on Nov 5, 2008 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

For Lesnar’s lack of skill on the feet, he has much faster hands and reflexes than Big Tim who is rather slow and methodical.

by bigweeze on Nov 6, 2008 3:33 AM EST up reply actions

45, thats amazing

All praises due to Randy for staying on top when most other pro athletes his age had retired a decade ago. He is going against a guy in his physical prime who is bigger, stronger, and (scarily) quicker than any other heavyweight he has fought and also has amazing wrestling ability. Getting into a dominant position against Lesner in order to attempt submissions will be very very difficult.

Still, if he is able to get Brock on his back with a big take down it will be one of the greatest moments in UFC history (one that you would see countless times as an iconic part of UFC highlight packages). I’m excited for this fight and I think the arena will be electric.

If Randy drops Brock (like he did Tim) you know that crowd is going to go wild – myself as well.

I am hoping for two things – Randy to drop Brock and Randy to take Brock down. If those two things do in fact happen (which I believe they will) – win, lose, or draw – Randy is going to make history they way no other sports figure has before – which will open the sport like never before

Crowd will definitely go wild. I don’t think it can happen though, its becoming increasingly clear that Big Tim has a paper chin. Just on sheer odds, Lesnar’s chin won’t be that weak.

At least from his WWE days, we know Brock can take somewhat of a shot. Just because wrestling is fake, it doesn’t mean there is no impact in the blows they take. And Brock was one of the most explosive wrestlers there ever was. He even broke his neck during a match.

I will be very surprised if Brock is the tough guy who can’t take a hit. He played in the Vikings training camp and started fights apparently (not a wise idea with 300lb men around).

Sometimes there is the bully that doesn’t like being pushed back (Big Tim is that type). But Brock is extremely competitive and adversity brings out his mean streak.

If he does take a punch from Randy, it may not hurt all that much. Even if it does, Brock is a great wrestler and one of the defining traits of wrestlers (generally) in MMA is their ability to remain composed and settle the fight down until they are in a position to continue.

My feeling is that Randy will have to somehow get into a dominant position to inflict enough damage to really slow/bother Brock considering the size difference. Considering how slight Randy’s chances are of a KO/Sub I think he’ll really have to scratch and claw his way to a decision over 5 rounds,

i hope lesnar picks him and rips him in half

or i hope couture is senile enough to try and triangle lesnar from the bottom. i wanna see him thrown throught freaking floor.

Any particular reason? Are you just a Lesnar-lover? Or a Couture-hater?

I ask because I honestly can’t imagine why anyone would be a Couture-hater — the guy has basically never done anything except respect the sport, his opponents, and the fans, and has consistently demonstrated what intelligent game-planning, hard work, and determination will do for you. He’s been a great ambassador for the sport. I get maybe not being a huge fan, I guess, because to each his own. But I can’t really fathom hating the guy.

I’m always curious when I see statements like this one about guys like Couture or Silva.

by Kierkegaard on Nov 5, 2008 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I won’t go as far as DBCB but I’m hoping that if Lesnar wins it is convincing and not left to the judges. Through the floor may be a bit much but if Lesnar wins I’d like it to be very obvious that size, speed, strength are major factors helping him overcome his lack of experience.

by pr0cs on Nov 5, 2008 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

Are we forgetting about him trying to go to Affliction because he bascially wasn’t getting paid enough? He is the reason this stupid match up is even taken place. He should have fought Nog by now. And instead I have to watch freaking mir (who i hate). I am bitter. BITTER!

I am not a lesnar lover. ACtually don’t like watching wrestlers. But, as someone who lifts weights rather seriously… I’m cheering for the monstrous 280lb dude with abs. Dude is a freak of nature athletically and strength wise and it makes up for his lack of skill in other areas. I wish more athletic freaks like this would get into MMA, but others sports pay more and you don’t have to get punched in the face lol

I see that, I guess. At the same time, the mess with the UFC was definitely not a one-way problem. There is plenty of blame there to go both ways I think.

To me, one of the reasons I’m not a big fan of Lesnar is precisely because I cringe at the idea that sheer size without any particular mma skills could enable someone to be the champion. I’m afraid it’s going to send the message that if you’re big enough you should come in and “do” mma and just bullrush everyone to win the title. I’d hate to see the sport get to the point where all of the technical skills go out the window and we start just looking for the biggest freaks of nature around. I’m just on the other side of that fence from you, I guess.

Thanks for explaining, though. I appreciate the insight into your thoughts.

“I’d hate to see the sport get to the point where all of the technical skills go out the window and we start just looking for the biggest freaks of nature around.”

Never happen. If the sport gets filled with freaks of nature, then the top fighters will be highly technical freaks of nature. Which I look forward to, very much.

by Michaelthebox on Nov 5, 2008 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

exactly… it will never happen.

What WILL happen with someone like Lesnar is people will start to see the advantages (and maybe disadvantages too) of being big, strong, and fast.

These guys with awesome BJJ, wrestling, and Striking will start looking for ways they can become bigger and stronger. They will start looking at themselves.

You will see less pot bellied, sloppy looking fighters and more bigger, stronger, ripped guys.

It isn’t just with Lesnar. Look at Thiago Alves. That dude is a MONSTER 170. Look at his before pics. You see how much trouble Koscheck had taking him down? You don’t think that strength didn’t help?

They sport will always evolve.

by dbcb on Nov 5, 2008 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

That was an odd comment

“Without any particular MMA skills”? Lesnar is a master at one of the three main aspects of MMA.

I wish I could find the youtube clip of an ancient Tao trick a guy displays by somehow sucking his testies up into his stomach. He then invites the British show host to kick him ten times as hard as he could in the nads, which the host complies to. At each kick the old Chinese man kept saying “AGAIN!” and eventually the host pooped himself. It was one of the greatest things I have ever seen on the internet ever.
