WEC Middleweight Champ Paulo Filho Misses Weight

Filho

Paulo Filho missed weight by a whopping 7 lbs on his first attempt, weighing in at 192.  He now has 2 hours to cut down.  I have yet to hear any word on if Sonnen's people would consider taking the fight at a catch weight, but this just goes to show that Filho's outside the cage distractions are a major factor here and have carried over into his conditioning.  He is not new to this game and 7 lbs is no minor miss.

Mike Brown weighed in half a pound heavy also, but should be able to cut that easily.

ALSO, Rani Yahya missed weight but Yoshiro Maeda has agreed to fight him at the weigh-in amount rather than force a single pound cut.

Updates to come as they're made available.

UPDATE #1:  From Sherdog:

The undefeated Brazilian checked in at 192 pounds -- a whopping seven pounds over his contracted weight limit -- for his rematch with Chael Sonnen. “How much?” a dismayed Sonnen asked, with longtime trainer Matt Lindland at his side. The Team Quest middleweight had no such trouble meeting the 185-pound threshold; Sonnen tipped the scales at 184.5.

Filho, whose personal problems away from the cage in recent months have been well-chronicled, was afforded an additional two hours to cut seven pounds.

“Right now, it’s not even a fight,” Sonnen said. “The contract’s at 185. I have faith in him. I think he can pull it off in two hours. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve prepared properly.”

All reports have said that Brown made weight on his second attempt.  But so far no word on if Filho has made weight yet or if Sonnen will be willing to take the fight at this current weight difference.

UPDATE #2:  We're now hearing confirmations that the Filho/Sonnen fight is non-title.  MMAWeekly reports:

MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday evening confirmed with WEC officials that Filho got down to 189 pounds on his second attempt, therefore making the bout ineligible for championship designation. The two camps did come to terms, which were not disclosed, allowing the fight to go on as a three-round non-title bout.

Despite losing its championship luster, the bout is still holds important implications for Filho and Sonnen. With the WEC discontinuing both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions at the end of this year, this bout is expected to serve as a qualifier, likely to launch the winner into the WEC's sister promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Check out the picture on that MMAWeekly report. Filho looks bad.  I know part of it is the lighting, but he just doesn't look right at all.

UPDATE #3 ( by Cannon Jacques):  The WEC later reported that Filho will forfeit 25% of his purse to Sonnen as a result of missing weight.  Props to MMAWeekly.

Number 2, huh?

I’m over this guy. He’s not going to make the cut. That’s just embarrassing…

by Blackout612 on Nov 4, 2008 6:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well, shit. That’s all I can say at this point.

by Cannon Jacques on Nov 4, 2008 6:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Anyone know what the implications of this is?

I know if the challenger fails to make weight the title shot is off, but what happens if the champion fails to do so?

by Tonley on Nov 4, 2008 6:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Generally...

it becomes a non-title affair also.

As opposed to a title fight that doesn’t really mean anything, since the belt gets thrown in the trash at the end of the night

It's still the same

To say you were the WEC Middleweight Champion. Shit, the last WEC Middleweight Champion. It’s a very distinct honor, you could say.

by Blackout612 on Nov 4, 2008 6:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Then it was smart of Filho to miss weight so badly

Now Sonnen can’t take it from him!

j/k of course, I don’t mean to excuse Filho, but the circumstances here are pretty unique. But it would seem reasonable that competing for a obsolete belt when you’re the reigning champ might affect your motivation

That second “but” shouldn’t be there

although it probably means a lot to Sonnen.

In boxing....

IF the champion won, the title would become vacant. But if the challenger wins, he would become champion.

by JCS_FM on Nov 4, 2008 6:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess you could win the title then perpetually miss weight and be the champion forever!

You could just come in at a different weight class altogether.

Win the 170 belt, come in at 205 for every fight with a cheese burger in each hand on the scales.

I guess that pic the other day was recent. This is unacceptable. I can see being off by a pound, these guys don’t want to cut more than they need to, but 7 is ridiculous.

Considering his recent mess, he should be stripped if he fails to drop the pounds.

Yeah, i know he has talked about making the move in the past, but i look at him and no way should he be a lhw. If he was ripped at 185, fine. but he looks very smooth even when he makes weight.

7lbs on the first attempt?

Thats like saying this guy didn’t even bother cutting weight the last week. As if he were wingin’ it.

If I recall correctly Alves weighed in 4lbs over when he fought Hughes. And that was heinous. 7lbs…. dear lord. Will the fight even take place?

by Discman2 on Nov 4, 2008 7:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Filho originally weighed in a shocking seven pounds over the 185-pound limit. He could only drop from 192 to 189 pounds after being given an additional two hours to make weight, according to the WEC.

Non-title now.

by Beer Monster on Nov 4, 2008 7:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hey its not that bad

Nick Diaz weighed in at 9 lbs over against Corbbrey

by skwirrl on Nov 4, 2008 7:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I know its the last ever middleweight bout but Filho really should be stripped of the title immediately. I remember at UFC 51 when Evan Tanner and David Terrell were fighting for the title that both fighters weighed in heavy the first time. Tanner made weight, and Marc Ratner told him that if Terrell doesn’t make weight the fight will still be a title belt just that Terrell can’t win it.

The same thing should apply here.

by SamCupitt on Nov 4, 2008 8:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

This has to be bad for Fhilo’s career, he didn’t just miss weight he completely blew it. I can’t see how he stays at Middleweight after this and going into the UFC light heavyweight division is going to be tough for him.

by who me on Nov 4, 2008 8:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Probably goes to the UFC as a light heavyweight and gets punished… Dana style… by being matched up against Chuck Liddell. The worst possible match-up for Filho…ever.

by SamCupitt on Nov 4, 2008 8:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s gotta get thrown to the wolves, I think. If he can weather the storm and remain undefeated, we’ll see where he is in a year. But for now, he’s gotta face low-upside (in victory), tough up and comers. He still stays at 185, that’s pretty much guaranteed. But nothing’s coming easy to him now.. Sonnen better be taking home half of Filho’s purse, at least. I feel bad for that guy. I’ve been saying, Filho is a fucking albatross on the career of Chael Sonnen.

by Blackout612 on Nov 4, 2008 8:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt, Filho deserves all the criticism that’s coming at him. Making weight indicates that you’re at least serious about living up to your end of the bargain going into the fight. The guy is damn talented. From that perspective, I hate to see him tarnish his career in this manner. If you don’t want to fight, don’t. If you’re going to, you have to at least come in at the prescribed weight.

by Cannon Jacques on Nov 4, 2008 8:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s had problems hitting 185 in all of his WEC fights and there has been rumblings about him moving up to 205 in the past. He is a incredibly talented fighter but he just has a huge problem hitting 185 for some reason.

Paulo is lost

After seeing his picture and his recent struggles, I am going to predict (albeit boldly) that he looks terrible in this fight and Chael TKOs him in the first round.

by DirtyML on Nov 4, 2008 8:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Very interesting note..
Perhaps more interesting is that Filho’s cornerman indicated to Lindland that they would give up the title belt if Sonnen wins. “His cornermen told us that they would walk across the cage and hand Chael the belt if he wins. When Chael whoops his ass, I expect them to live up to their word.”

by Blackout612 on Nov 4, 2008 8:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

WEC always puts the best fights on the undercard.
Sad but true, and we never get a chance to see them.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Nov 4, 2008 8:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Um no they don't

The undercard for WEC 34 couldn’t hold a candle to the main card. As special as Aldo vs Pequeno sounded it SUCKED. Razor Robs team was right next to me and THEY were booing. (Ironic considering how boring his match was.) Watching Aldo finally catch up to him after all Pequeno’s running and beat the shit outta him was nice though and Cruz vs Valencia was admittedly pretty good. McKenzie vs Lang was only good if you like the local journeyman fighter with juice from the crowd beating a huge lay’n’pray favorite with a choke and leaving him sleeping in the ring after 2 rounds of Lay’n’Pray. Sapo vs Serdyukov was forgettable. Riberio vs Beebe was a wrestling match and Brown Lay’n’prayed Curran.

Castillo vs Cerrone was pretty good but they showed that on TV anyways. Grigsby vs Munoz shouldn’t have been on the main card but at least it was exciting. Then the main 2 were Torres and Urijah’s fights. Both awesome. Torres Maeda was a FotY candidate.

Thats 4 good fights that showed and 1 really crappy one. Compared to 5 that were largely forgettable to 1 that was pretty awesome on the undercard.

The undercard

by skwirrl on Nov 4, 2008 10:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You know...

the more I think about it, I can’t understand why this isn’t 3 hours. Considering the strong likelihood that we will see the WEC going ppv the first half of 2009, it seems it would be a great opportunity to provide exposure to fighters that likely will be involved.

http://eliotmarshall.com/

by BJJDenver on Nov 4, 2008 8:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

agreed..

I’ve never understood why all the UFN’s are not 3 hours. Sometimes the under card is just as good as the main card. It’s not as if Spike or Versus has other programming that can bring in better ratings.

by steveoc24 on Nov 4, 2008 9:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Spike may have something to get as good of ratings but you can pretty much guarantee that Versus doesn’t. The question would be how much more would it cost the network for 3 hours compared to two hours.

by who me on Nov 4, 2008 9:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It should also be noted..

Someone should tell Filho that just because he idolizes Iron Mike and got him tattooed on his arm doesn’t mean he has to compete with him in the crazy department. CHAEL! IMA EAT YO CHILDRENS!

by Blackout612 on Nov 4, 2008 9:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hockey on the west coast

that would be my only guess as to something that bring in similar ratings.

By the way… Signing Filho’s death warrant now is all well and good but uh… What happened when Alves came in 4 lbs heavy for the Hughes fight?

by skwirrl on Nov 4, 2008 9:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Come on..

Are you kidding? He cancalled a fight with Sonnen because he was depressed and then put off rescheduling it. Then a hurricane delayed their last match up. This is the third time they’re supposed to rematch for the title, and he comes in seven over. Not even remotely close to being a comparable situation.

by Blackout612 on Nov 4, 2008 9:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He canceled the fight because he was in withdrawl from being addicted to Rohypnol, this makes me wonder if he’s having struggles with staying clean.

by skwirrl on Nov 4, 2008 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But if he somehow gets Sonnen down the result will be the same at 92, 192 or 292 lbs. Submission victory Filho

If he’s not in withdrawl from Rohypnol this time like he likely was during the last fight, (in order to pass the piss tests), I suspect he’ll be fine. One will balance out the other.
