this finale card is a bit thin, no?
aside from this rematch, the only other announced fight is macdonald gouveia. guess we’ll be seeing more cast members fighting than in previous seasons.
Decision
by Mazzagati in first fight warranted a suspension. There was no way for him to justify his ruling TKO victory because fighter is unable to continue from getting poked in the eye.
Read the rules, from his angle, Burns threw an uppercut, Johnson falls to the ground unable to defend himself. That is a TKO. Under current NSAC rules, that decision cannot be overturned, except I think by violating NSAC rules, like being on drugs. An unintentional injury does not break NSAC rules.
That being said, this is a good case for changing the rules, to allow at least replays to possibly change a ruling afterwards.
Mazzagati made the right call based on the information available to him.

Until the 30 replays on the big screen...
I don’t necessarily think it’s all Mazz’s fault (the NSAC could have easily overturned it into a NC since eye poking is a violation of the rules), however I am tired of people making that argument. Also, Johnson fell to the ground screaming with no tap or verbal submission. That is not a TKO, he makes every other fighter finish his opponent. He did no such thing with Burns, he had numerous warnings about eye poking, than he got his eye poked and Burns got a TKO victory. Bottom line is that it was a terrible call…I don’t get how people can dispute that.
He overturned his own decision in Maynard v. Emerson fight, he certainly could have done it in this case.
Screaming and falling on the ground face down while flailing arms and legs is a pretty damn clear sign of being unable to defend yourself. Therefore no finishing is necessary. The call was absolutely fine, the fight had to be stopped to protect the safety of a fighter. The eye poke was not obvious at all from the angle shown on TV or the angle Mazzagati was viewing the fight from at that moment.
As far as changing the ruling, from everything I have read, the Athletic Commission where the fight took place does not allow a change of the ruling under the circumstances of an unintentional injury due to an unintentional foul.
Sorry
but I don’t make a habit of reading the Nevada State Athletic Commission rule book passed out to referee’s in MMA,but what I do know is Johnson has a loss on his record for getting poked in the eye and that’s wrong and I don’t know how Mazzagati couldn’t have a clue as to what caused him to go down because it was pretty clear he was poked in the eye and he’s standing right there in the cage with them.Bottom line it was a bad decision by the referee and to say otherwise is just being argumentative.
no...it's really not.
That particular eye poke was not nearly as obvious as the others and he did the right thing in jumping in. He thought it was the punch that finished it. the NSAC are to blame for not overturning the decision. Was Maz’s call wrong? Yeah…it was. But to defend him for having to make a heat of the moment decision is not simply being argumentative.

I can't
believe people are defending Mazzagati over this horrendous decision. The man was standing right there and totally blew it.At least the UFC made an immediate rematch and Johnson has a chance to avenge the loss, and I would be willing to bet that Steve Mazzagati will not be the referee for the fight.Maybe coming to his defense isn’t being argumentative but I sure wouldn’t waste my time making it a point to defend him.

Johnson's arm
was blocking the eye poke. Maz was obviously in a blind spot to what happened.
Interviewer skills lacking
That was a painful interview to watch. I am always excited to hear from up & comers like Rumble Johnson but this didn’t help people learn a damn thing about him. He was struggling to give interesting answers to crap questions.
