Kurt Angle Announces His Desire to Fight MMA...Again

Kurt Angle Color me extremely, extremely skeptical:

Kurt Angle just appeared on the Max Kellerman on 1050 ESPN Radio to announce his intentions of shopping himself around for an MMA fight. He stated that he is in great physical shape, planning on getting a physical for MMA on Tuesday and that his intentions are to get himself a high paying fight due to the itch to test out his skills in the MMA ring. His ideal fight would be facing off against the winner of Lesnar and Couture, and he further stated that in a backstage fight against Lesnar he was able to get the better of the bigger man thanks to his quickness and center of gravity.

The interview centered mostly around Kurt Angle's history as a fighter and his decision to join the WWE rather than venture into the world of MMA following his gold medal victory in Atlanta in 1996. His decision was obviously a financial one. In the mid 90s MMA still in its infancy did not offer the cash that was available at WWE, so despite the itch to still fight Angle chose the more stable option. Monetarily it certainly worked out for Angle who turned out to become one of the WWEs top draws in the late 90s and early 00s but during the course of the interview it was highly evident that he never lost the itch to fight and semi-regretted the decision in retrospect.

Haven't we been down this road so many times before?

Ridiculous

He’s puffing his chest out because he feels inadequate. He’s got a big ego and I honestly doubt this will ever happen. Dana should sign him to fight someone low to mid-tier (at least, as far as the UFC hierachy is concerned). Does he seriously want to fight at heavyweight? I’m confident he’ll lose and go back to the wrestling ring. He has admitted himself that Dana encouraged him to train MMA full-time, but he doesn’t believe he’ll have to. How naive is that? He’s an egomaniac, this will likely never happen— and should it, he’ll get knocked out round one.

I am so sick of hearing it...........

I just wish that Dana White would sign him to fight, and give him a Luis Cane or Thiago Silva or even Liddell to pound that ridiculisness out of him. Who does this guy think he is kidding???
He will be 50 saying he is gonna break into the mma world and that he is a former wrestler, blah, blah, blah…………

Just do it already and get the piss beat out of him

Have you heard his ridiculous explanation?

He said while wrestling the last guy (moments before Puder) he slammed his head into the mat during a takedown and had a concussion, and that he didn’t think Puder would take him up on the offer. So he was totally out of it when Puder put him in the kimura. How convenient..

by Blackout612 on Nov 3, 2008 1:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

lol

yeah I listened to him and Puders interviews. Angle also said something like, he could have really hurt Puder if he wanted, but chose to take him down instead, and that Puder was clinging to ropes, etc.

So full of crap. He lost to an MMA kid who had just done bunch of squat-thrusts (the contest to get to see who fought Kurt – the winner getting his ribs broken).

by mythbuster on Nov 3, 2008 1:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah!

He was saying how he was protecting him and that he could have flipped him over from the kimura. I don’t think he understands the mechanics of the human arm. Hahaha.. Maybe Dana should let those two fight. Puder is still undefeated, you know. I have wondered for some time what his situation is, because he hasn’t found in probably 18 months. That seems a bit too circusy for the likes of the UFC, but I might be interested in seeing it somewhere.

That's hilarious.

I wish Angle would fight, or go away. I’m afraid he’s going to do neither, however.

Just keep jawing

I want him to take a fight and lose and just be done with it..

by Blackout612 on Nov 3, 2008 1:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Even then

He’d probably say it was a fix, demand a rematch, say the W doesn’t count for the other guy, blah blah. For a guy who’s strength at pro-wrestling was his lack of ego, he’s really become standard-issue WWE power crazy.

They’ll never, ever, ever give him the winner of Lesnar/Couture. Brock may have gotten his shot a little too soon (although that whole ‘Werdum was robbed!’ chant seems to have died the fuck down), but he had to face a former HW champion and beat a legit top 10-12 HW before being given the shot.

If money had a dick, Kurt Angle would give great head.

by subo on Nov 3, 2008 1:11 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Brock’s shot is definitely a product of the murkey title situation, less than it is a situation of him being carried on a throne to the promised land. Of course, Angle doesn’t deserve that subsequent shot at the winner. His reference to a “fight” with Brock was an amateur wrestling match (a brief one, at that). It was years ago (when Angle was younger, stronger and with a healthier neck) and it was a one time thing. He’ll carry that story to his grave.

Interesting

Angle is a great wrestler, but has he ever taken a punch. Put him in a LHW fight with lower level puncher like Stephan Bonner. Lets see if he has a chin before we make any judgements.

Oof..

I think that would be the end of this. Bonnar would crush his face. I picked up an issue of Fight magazine well over a year ago that contained an article with Angle about his “future in MMA”. It contained photos of him hitting a bag with the side of his hand and an open Kevin Burnsy hand.

Dude needs to learn how to throw a punch that doesn’t include a mat stomp, and he may fall under the old dog/new tricks caveat.

the sad part is....

….some lover level MMA upstart will give him a fight and he will go in and submit some tomato can, then keep talking crap for the next 20 years about how he is unbeaten in MMA.

It's possible, but not probable

He wants the exposure and a big payday. He’s overvaluing himself.

by Blackout612 on Nov 3, 2008 1:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This should be a non-issue.

If Angle wants to do this and get some respect, easy answer: Head to Japan.

Over there his WWE experience won’t be held against him like it would here. If he is successful there, then he would at least have some basis for arguing his way into a contract here somewhere.

But until he actually does something beyond talk about it, I really don’t see the UFC or anyone else signing him for real money.

Wow

is it SOOOO bad that this guy wants in? Getting the Lesnar/Couture winner is out of the question but yeah I wouldn’t mind seeing Bonner crush his face for a couple rounds. Oh its true, its true!

In all seriousness......

Someone should make sure that he knows his wife wont be able to jump into the cage and smash his opponent with a brief case.

I just can't take him seriously...

…particularly when faced with the cheesy wrestler photos. Maybe that’s just me!

There will always be a market for...

There will always be a market for a loud mouth/heel potentially getting his teeth kicked in.
-Angle losses and MMA gains more mainstream legitimacy through the reduction of the “anybody can do that” stigma and we get to see him eat his words.
-Angle wins and he brings his established fan base and new viewers to MMA
-If Kimbo has taught us anything; WE WILL WATCH.
I think Stephen Bonner is an excellent idea, and I believe Bonner wins handily, but name recognition is powerful cologne.

Being on the internet gives me a right...nay a responsibility to bitch about things

As long as the media continues to feed Angle’s ego by giving him a platform to speak his mind, Angle will, unfortunately, never go away. It’s time people just let him fade away.

by pud333 on Nov 3, 2008 3:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

hmmm

Why the interest in seeing him fade away?

The thing with MMA is that you can run your mouth all you want, but it aint pro wrestling. Eventually you have to back it up. I say if Angle comes in and puts on great fights, yay for him and yay for us. If he gets his ass kicked…thats ok too. Thats the great thing about the sport.

Doesn’t Fabricio Werdum need an opponent. I mean Angle is so good he should be able to beat him without even training. Put him on the next card.

by The_Vig on Nov 3, 2008 3:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Would love to see Angle in the UFC. Why would that be a bad thing? Dude is an olympic medal winner. Something Lesnar nor Randy ever accomplished so he obviously has sick skills as a wrestler at least. That’s a great base to start out with.

by lbk on Nov 3, 2008 3:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It's not really a bad thing.

It’s that he’s been talking about it for a long time, and not doing it.

That said – he is beyond his prime, his body is broken down (how many broken necks are we at now?), he is extremely one dimensional and without the Mighty Joe Young size difference that Lesnar uses to pretend he’s a skilled mixed martial artist, Angle probably won’t last long at all against even a gatekeeper fighter. He’s welcome to try, but I don’t blame the UFC (or anyone else) for not throwing money at him to find out.

by mythbuster on Nov 3, 2008 3:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He would never be able to participate in ANY sanctioned event.

His neck is probably accordion-esque from that many breaks. He would be huge in Japan however.

Keep dreaming Kurt.

by DirtyML on Nov 3, 2008 3:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wikipedia says he’s broken his neck 5 times.

Be awful if he got punched so hard he got paralyzed in the ring.

by toxic on Nov 3, 2008 4:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.

I mean, would any athletic commission clear him to fight considering his past injuries.
