Kimbo Slice to K-1!

Japanese tabloid Tokyo Sports reported that Kimbo Slice will be making appearance at Dec 6 K-1 show in Yokohama Japan to say hi to Japanese fans, K-1 Event Producer Tanigawa confirmed. His K-1 debut match will be in March, vs. current K-1 heavyweight champ, Badr Hari.

K-1 is basically kickboxing without elbow and muay thai clinch. Good for Kimbo not have to worry about ground game.

In Japan, Fuji TV (one of major network TV) covers major K-1 events, including Dec 6 show, on prime time. I believe US fans can also see K-1 on HDNet, starting this show.

Misleading title?

by banter on Nov 29, 2008 2:05 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What is misleading?

He is making a promotional appearance and then his debut. If you consider the speculation that he would be appearing at Dream vs Seth, I would say it is pretty accurate.

No its cool!

I read the title, started reading the first sentence and my brain shut down wondering about his contract so my eyes glazed over the rest.

His K-1 debut will be against Hari? Isn’t he like the hottest thing right now in K-1?

This is Japanese sports…we won’t know what will really happen until a week or two out. :)

Too bad pro-elite is screwing everyone over so bad. Would have been great for Dream to have him.

Not good...

This should not happen, Kimbo could quite literally die at the hands of Badr. He is very possibly the most devastating striker in the world.

by skwirrl on Nov 29, 2008 6:09 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Badr Hari

is a little overrated in my opinion. He’d be a big favorite for sure, but I think your underrating Kimbo’s punching power. He could KO Badr Hari if he catches him flush, and this isn’t as big a mismatch as the Don Frye/Jerome Lebanner K-1 fight from years back.If the fight lasts a while bad news for Kimbo ‘cause he might not be able to walk for a few days after the amount of wicked leg kicks he’d take.

by tylerdurden1 on Nov 29, 2008 9:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah…sorry, Kimbo is going to go down hard. We don’t even know if he has any punching power, he landed shot after shot on glass chin James Thompson who stayed up easily. HIs striking is terrible, he is going to be hurt badly. This is beyond idiotic.

by Michael Rome on Nov 29, 2008 11:06 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

This fight…………it won’t happen.

by banter on Nov 29, 2008 11:13 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ruslan Karaev can actually box

and can punch alot heavier than Kimbo. He had Badr actually hurt. This is what happened to him when he let his guard down for a SECOND.

kimbo lost to seth. kimbo doesnt even have good striking… to even say that he could hang with a K1 HW champ is just wrooooooooooooong..

and just on a side note… Knees from the clinch are legal in K-1. The rule is really weird though, with a 2 hand muay thai clinch you can only throw 1 knee per clinch. If you are only clinched with 1 arm you can throw multiple knees.

by skwirrl on Nov 29, 2008 6:12 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

AND...

now we will be able to see this on HDNet!

I don’t thin kimbo is gonna make it against badr hari, this guy is realy fast with his hands and legs,

Look at this vid,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_K2HsF8Xwk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tIi9jpOtHQ

Badr will decapitate kimbo if he not keeps his hand up, i realy looking forward to this fight!!

Holy Crap! Now that's a kick.

Kimbo is in way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way way waaaaaaay over his head. Pro: Kimbo gets 3 minute rounds and dosen’t have to train ground. Con: This fight isn’t going 3 minutes, and Kimbo will end up on the ground, unconscious.

by Ubernoober on Nov 30, 2008 11:28 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

GG Kimbo. Nice first fight to take lol

by lbk on Nov 30, 2008 11:30 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not going to happen.

Kimbo v. Sapp. That sounds likely. I just made that up and it has more of a chance at becoming reality then Kimbo v. Hari. Plus, a fight against Sapp would me a little more competitive and would probably bring more interest as the Japanese love their circus match-ups.

Let’s start spreading that rumor in the hope that it starts driving up some dub-dub-dub interest. I’ll start it off:

Sources close to the camp of Team Kimbo have indicate that a potential bout with Bob Sapp is in the works for a K1 end of the year show.

by dropkick101 on Nov 30, 2008 5:04 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bob Sapp would murder Kevin Ferguson.

by Richard Wade on Nov 30, 2008 6:47 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That may very well be the case but I still think it’s a better match-up for Kimbo than going against one of the best kickboxers out there. Kimbo could conceivably beat Sapp despite being the underdog. Everyone is writing him completely off as a joke after his devastating 14 second KO but I will go ahead and play devil’s advocate and say one flash KO loss shouldn’t be the end all be all of what a fighter is capable of, even if that fighter is Kimbo.

If Sapp destroyed Kimbo, his stock would raise considerably after his loss to Jan Nortje earlier this year. If Kimbo is able to silence the critics and beat the much more experienced Bob Sapp then he becomes relevant again to the sport, despite Sapp not exactly being elite. A Hari match-up does little for Hari and further destroys Kimbo’s career.

by dropkick101 on Nov 30, 2008 7:12 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, it’s definitely a better match up for Ferguson. It’s still not a remotely good match up for him, though.

by Richard Wade on Nov 30, 2008 9:05 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kimbo vs Sapp… I would watch that fight! It would be like watching a cartoon or something. Btw, I`m not native to this tongue, but doesn`t “sapp” mean “idiot/moron” or something similar??? Or was it gullible?

by BlueberryMuffin on Dec 1, 2008 8:43 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh Oh Oh I got one! Kimbo vs Kimo!

by BlueberryMuffin on Dec 1, 2008 8:44 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bob Sapp can’t murder a fly. One punch to the face and he starts running away.

by Discman2 on Nov 30, 2008 7:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was thinking that Kimbo vs Akebono (or maybe Bobby Ologun) would be more likely starting points for him to start the circus in Japan. The guy may one day prove to be a legitimate contender but at this point he’s still the crazy youtube guy and that could sell for them until he could develop his potential better.

by who me on Dec 1, 2008 2:18 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’d pay good money to see Cro-Cop vs. Kimbo. Really. I would.

by Kierkegaard on Dec 1, 2008 11:05 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Japanese would definitely put that fight on. If Mirko beats Overeem, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them book such a fight. They have a tendency of giving their top fighters easy wins following big, legitimate victories. The thinking must be something like “Oh, you just won a very tough fight so we’re going to put you in an easy situation to further boost your confidence and bolster our wallets with no real threat to either.”

by dropkick101 on Dec 1, 2008 11:18 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kimbo isn’t the worse fighter, I only think that he’s not ready for this kind of fights and has to learn some view more things,
In his fights i never saw kimbo use his legs,And if you r not used to knees ore legkicks than you have a big problem!! I can asure you that there are some guys in k1 who can kick realy realy hard.lol Peter earts and Badr are 2 of them (wink)

by Timbrado on Dec 1, 2008 2:50 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Does anyone happen to know if Kimbo is training right now?

He is so far behind every other fighter his age or any age for that matter really if he wants to catch up he should be in the gym constantly. Not just a few weeks before every fight.

Still even with that I think Kimbo gets beat by any decent fighter in MMA, K-1, or boxing if he goes that route.

by mattman73 on Dec 1, 2008 12:34 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kimbo

is still training with Bas Rutten’s camp.

by tylerdurden1 on Dec 1, 2008 1:01 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yea I know where he trains.

But my question was is he training everyday or is he just training for a few weeks before a fight?

Cause if he isn’t training everyday regardless of having an upcoming fight signed then he is a lost cause.

by mattman73 on Dec 1, 2008 3:05 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He just made $500,000 for his last fight. The guy is not stupid and realizes there is still the potential for him to make lots and lots of money doing this. I am positive he is in the gym trying to better himself in order to earn bigger future paydays. It’s not like he needs to be working a 9-5 job to pay the bills instead.

by dropkick101 on Dec 1, 2008 3:54 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Is that a for sure fact you know he is training on a daily basis or do you think he is because he made $500,000 for his last fight and you think he wants to keep making that money?

Cause there are a lot of guys that would also take a lot of time off to spend that $500,000.

by mattman73 on Dec 1, 2008 4:54 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He stated in an interview that he is still training hard for fights over in Japan.
I guess he was alluding to K-1.

He may fight Sapp on NYE and Hari in March.
He will make an appearance in the Dec 6th show to greet the fans.

All you who are questioning Kimbo or FEG for putting on these matches are nuts.
That is how the Japanese do it. Your initiation to fighting for them is seeing if you can survive against the best. Just ask Minowa, Saku, Yoon, Nestula, etc, about it. Rampage fought a K-1 fighter and beat him on a Dynamite show, so, it is always a great spectacle to witness.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 1, 2008 5:20 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think I made it clear that I was working off of intuition. Unless somebody on here trains with Kimbo everyday, which I doubt, you are not going to get a firm answer.

And to say there are a lot of guys out there that would spend that $500,000 could potentially be true in some extreme circumstances but not most of the time. It’s simple: if Kimbo liked that big payday and ever wants to see it again, he knows he’s going to have to keep working on his craft. And if for whatever reason he doesn’t know it, the people he has surrounded himself with do know it.

I think it’s a ludicrous question to ask if the guy is still training on a regular basis. He was an internet celebrity i.e. not making tons of cash or experiencing the celebrity he did when he entered MMA. This sport changed his life. Anybody who thinks one KO is going to make the guy just pack up and quit something that has given him an unprecedented level of success isn’t thinking clearly.

by dropkick101 on Dec 1, 2008 5:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well it wasn’t so clear to me. Because it sounds like intuition but you said you were positive he was. So how can you be positive if it’s just intuition? That is what wasn’t clear to me.

I was just wanting some clarification.

I’m glad you took the time to respond to my ludicrous question though. Thanks.

by mattman73 on Dec 1, 2008 6:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kimbo will CRUSH Bard Hari

I don’t know why you all think Bard Hari will win. He sure is a great fighter, but Kimbo has only recently been unleashed and he has got awesome power and fighting spirit.

Remember, Kimbo has been brawling and street fighting for years, and Bas Rutten’s camp is now just polishing him up and perfectionizing his skills.

I wish Badr Hari good luck, but I think Kimbo will demolish him!!

by banana on Dec 1, 2008 4:11 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Perfectionizing? Really?

You’re going to pick a street-brawler turned fighter with no real pedigree in any disciple over a guy who is known as one of the greatest pure kickboxers on the planet. Are you out of your mind?

by dropkick101 on Dec 1, 2008 5:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope you’re kidding because if you are that was pretty funny and if you’re not I don’t know what to believe in any more.

Why put Kimbo with a stud on his first try out?

I honestly feel bad for how much people expect out of this dude. Not many people are as overestimated, and therefore screwed, as Kimbo.

by EazyEismydad on Dec 2, 2008 12:21 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

One teeny weeny thing you’re overlooking: When you get paid what Kimbo does, you don’t get easy fights. Ask Brock Lesnar. He’ll tell you as he shines his belt up with spit.

by dropkick101 on Dec 2, 2008 10:40 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh no. No easy fights for Kimbo! Both Tank and Colossus were superduper-tough fights and I bet Kimbo did it practically for free. Just to get some experience you know?
