A BloodyElbow.com Thanksgiving
This is the official BloodyElbow.com Happy Thanksgiving thread. I encourage every reader to share what they are thankful for (MMA related) in the comments section. I also encourage every BloodyElbow.com staff member to state what they are thankful for by updating this post with their response (include your name, gents).
As for me, I could list virtually any number of responses in our dramatically changing MMA world. I am thankful MMA is still is growing in spite of a declining economy and what was supposed to have been a plateau season. I am thankful with have competent adults in place (Zuffa) helping to nurture this sport into the next stratosphere of its development. I am thankful for the countless number of enjoyable fights we've seen at home and abroad. Believe it or not, I am thankful for the mainstream journalists who are slowly but surely coming around on mixed martial arts. I am thankful for the fighters worldwide whose hard work, discipline, sacrifice and unbelievable displays of athletic talent entertain us every day of our lives. I am also thankful for the fantastic talent of writers and editors who work daily to make BloodyElbow.com a success.
However, I'd be remiss were I not to candidly say I am most thankful to you, the reader. The dramatic and continuing growth of this site has been more enjoyable and rewarding than I am capable of describing. Your daily decision to visit us forces us to improve how we interact with you and retool how we cover this sport. You enable us to learn more about the sport, our own biases and about the value in other ways or lines of thinking. But most importantly, you give us the basic ability to do what we do. Without readers, we are merely chin scratchers talking to no one but ourselves. You are more far more than just a passive audience. You are in many ways part of the conversation. I, for one, never dreamed the site would grow so large and the conversation so interesting (and there are major workings behind the scenes to improve that in coming months; stay tuned). On behalf of everyone at BloodyElbow.com, thank you.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Travel safe and smart. Let's get ready for an exciting December and 2009. And of course, join us here through all of it. I promise it will be worth it.
KID NATE: I'm thankful most of all for the fighters who are willing to test themselves for our enjoyment and enlightenment. May you all continue to train and compete to the best of your abilities.
I'm thankful for Luke Thomas for his leadership and direction, the magic elves at SB Nation who rock the programming on this amazing family of sites, the whole BE crew for all the great posts and insight, and to you our BE readers for being the smartest and most constructive group of blood-crazed, knuckle-dragging, savages any MMA site could wish for.
NICK THOMAS: I'm thankful for Affliction putting together another card with Fedor against a top 10 guy, all the awesome FanPost's you guys have been pumping out recently and for UFC coming back to Canada in 2009. =)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
CHRIS NELSON: This Thanksgiving, I'm most grateful for: the BE community (our intrepid staff, ridiculously talented FanPosters, and the most knowledgeable commentors in the MMA blog game), Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, international MMA and the secret websites that help us watch it, underdogs and upsets (eat up, Mike Thomas Brown, you earned it), grand prixs, and the sheer volume of MMA we got to experience in 2008. (And there's still a month of amazing shows to come!) Above all, I'm simply thankful for this wonderful sport that brings us all so much excitement, frustration, joy and heartache all year round. Happy Thanksgiving y'all.
BRENT BROOKHOUSE: To say I'm thankful to Luke and Nate for giving me the opportunity to come on board here at BloodyElbow back around the summer of '07 would be a huge understatement. The truth is that this site is what it is now because we have a wonderful staff full of hard working, passionate guys who give up their time and money to cover the sport we love and I'm thankful to be associated with Luke, Nate, Chris, Mike R., Nick, Mike F. and Cannon. This has not been a pursuit that has brought us much by way of monetary gains but speaking personally there has not been a moment of time where I haven't felt extremely rewarded.
To our readers...thank you. There have been times where we have disagreed passionately but rare are the times that these have gotten out of hand and moved off the topic of MMA. The content that you all have been generating has been great also. I think there is more intelligent posting going on in the FanPost section of this site than just about any other MMA site on the web. To simply call you readers isn’t even fair. You are all contributors to the site and you push us to be better in our writing and coverage of the sport than we were the day before and that is what makes the site what it is.
Lastly, I'm thankful for the failure of EliteXC. I'm never happy to see fighters put into a bad situation. But the fact that a company could have premium cable coverage, be on network TV and fail so spectacularly will do much to scare off the pretenders from thinking that this sport is some sort of flash in the pan and that they should just throw some money into starting a new company without a solid gameplan to make a quick buck. The UFC remains the shining example of how to succeed in this sport and promotions like Strikeforce prove that you don't have to be the top dog to have be well respected and put on solid shows.
...I am also thankful for rum. Happy Thanksgiving!
MIKE FAGAN: As others have said, I'm thankful to Luke and Bloody Elbow for giving me a chance to contribute to the site. I'm not sure if many remember this, but things got started because I called out BE's gambling articles in a slightly abrasive manner. Fortunately, Luke and the staff understood that my criticisms were an attempt to improve the site's content and not just the ranting of an unmitigated troll. So here I am, writing for a blog that I feel is head-and-shoulders above everyone else, and getting to spout off my crazy thoughts and theories to an active audience.
As for MMA, I'm thankful we finally saw Liddell/Silva, even if it was three years too late. I'm happy I saw Silva/Henderson in person. I'm thankful for Eddie Alvarez's run in Dream both from a fan and gambler's persepctive. I'm glad to see a mega-star like Brock Lesnar enter the sport, and I'm ecstatic to see UFC 92 and 94.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday, and please don't drink and drive.
CANNON JACQUES: There are so many things to be appreciative of this Thanksgiving. I would be foolish not to echo the sentiments of my counterparts on the staff and thank the many readers/contributors to this site. I'm constantly amazed at the high level of debate which takes place here at BE. Being able to express your opinion without facing a barrage of childish criticism is worth more than I could possibly express in words. You guys make BE what it is - the finest MMA blog on the internet. I learn something new about this sport every time I log on.
Of course, I'm especially thankful to Luke, Nate, and all the other guys on the staff. They've enabled me to write, something I love to do, about a dynamic, growing sport that's extremely enjoyable to cover. Everyone at BE from the staff to the first time reader is treated with respect as long as they're respectful to others. Unfortunately in life, that's not always the case. I'm honored to be a part of a staff filled with individuals that are so talented and supportive of others.
Thanks to all the wonderful people who represent the sport of MMA with integrity and intelligence. These virtues are of paramount importance, in my opinion. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone.

I am extremely thankful for the beginnings of Royce Garcie in the UFC. This man showed that a smaller man can dominate a much larger, stronger man by heart and technique. He is a huge reason of why I am entering jiu-jitsu tournaments around my area. He has given me hope that you can overcome odds.
Also, Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock at UFC 40. Without this fight, I do not know if I would of got into MMA as early as I did. I remember watching this fight and Tito Ortiz just defeating the former WWF superstar Ken Shamrock. Instantly I became hooked. Watching a younger wiser and hungry Tito Ortiz really lit a fire underneath of me in which I don’t think I would of persued MMA at such an early stage of my life if it was not for Tito Ortiz/Ken Shamrock.
Even though I am thankful for a lot of MMA things, I believe that sources like Bloodyelbow.com, that allow us fans and fighters express our thoughts and views upon current MMA happenings is some of the best things going on the internet. So all of you readers and commentators thank you, and a huge THANK you to all the staff running this incredible site and letting us have a say in the events that follow.
Happy Thanksgiving.

I`m thankful for...
MMA in general, for being completely unpredictable and extremely entertaining. And for this site where a discussion never seem to turn ugly and the arguments are sound.

I hate to be cheesy...
But I am thankful for this site. I love MMA and I love writing about MMA. I do it for fun on other message boards but there isn’t a lot of traffic there. With this site I can write something and a lot of people will get to read it and that makes me feel good. Even though I’m not the best writer it’s still feels good that a lot of people appreciate the crap I write.
Most importantly the discussion afterword is civilized and intelligent, unlike other popular places. Another great thing is being able to discuss with the big guys on this site. They take the time to write the articles and then they take the time to argue with us. It’s pretty cool.

I’m not American but I’ll just say one thing.
I’m glad BE hasn’t “sold out” in order to make bank.
There are few sites left that aren’t seriously biased (Sherdog, MMA Weekly), so much so that reading a lot of their content becomes difficult to decypher fact from opinion.
There are few sites left that haven’t been bought by one of the internet conglomerates, sites that used to provide up-to-date info, rumors, commentary but now are a shell of themselves and shills for promoters and production. (MMAJunkie)
There are few sites that are proactive in moderating their reader generated to keep the place interesting and still maintain some sanity while letting people state their opinion (UG, Sherdog forums).
At this point BE is the only MMA site I read daily. Don’t sell out guys (I won’t blame you if you do), keep the site running just the way it is. I’ve been here a while now and am impressed how far the place has come over the past few years.

are you saying sherdog is or isn’t biased? I can’t tell.
by banter on Nov 27, 2008 11:54 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Sherdog has improved but there are still a large number of writers there that pan anything UFC/WEC, still mourning Pride.

Bloodyelbow is rips and credits everyone with fairness in my opinion. Another great very unbiased site is fightopinion.com. Zach Arnold is the man!

I’m thankful for MMA. Being from new england the PAts,celts, and red sox I live and breath. A ufc or WEC event is what gets me through my work weeks with something to look forward to. I’m greatful for wonderful sites like BE that take the time and effort to produce such good coverage of MMA. I come to this website before I get my dirt on the sox celts or pats or even my myspace. I’m also extremely thanklful for all the events comming up in Dec! Times are kind of tough for me right now and having something to look forward to like WEC and UFC events really keep my spirtis up, Happy Thanksgiving to eveyone!

I am thankful for getting to see Rashad Evans knock out Chuck Liddell this past year, that was epic! I am thankful I found BE when I was looking for video online of Evans Knocking out Chuck Liddell after having seen it live the night before. I am thankful that i got to see that sick move 3:57 seconds into the 3rd round of Caol Uno vs Rumina Sato 1999 after a fan posted Top 10 must see pride and shooto fights here. Thanks!

I’m thankful for a pretty solid year of MMA, and looking forward to one last awesome event to end the year in style next month. There have been some great fights this year. Rampage vs. Forrest, Torres vs. Maeda, Alvarez vs. Hansen stand out. Wanderlei Silva’s return to form was amazing. The rise of Brock Lesnar was unexpected, but will certainly help the UFC’s ailing heavyweight division. I was very happy that Randy returned, despite his loss. I am grateful for the rededication and dominance of BJ Penn and the eventual Penn/GSP rematch we will see because of it. I’m thankful for every little bit of mainstream coverage the UFC has received, and hoping that 2009 will bring a lot more.
On an unrelated note, I’m particularly thankful for the New York Giants, and their amazing play throughout the entire 2008 calendar year. I’ve bled blue since birth and sat through many terrible seasons and mind-numbing losses, so it’s certainly nice to reflect on their success within that context.
Keep up the good work, Bloody Elbow!

I am thankful to be able to hear Luke Thomas be his curmudgeonly self on the radio and as a guest on various shows on WJFK. 1 question for Luke – Are you the happiest when you have the most to b*tch about (being pre-empted, etc.) and how would you describe yourself to others?
by !claw on Nov 27, 2008 12:44 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Normally, sure. To the contrary, I am most happiest these days when I can turn off the faucet and just shut my face for a short while. Silence can indeed be golden. I respect that more now than ever.

I am thankful that MMA has grown so much, that it is everywhere. Not only do we have a dominant promotion, but we have great orgs like Strikeforce and WEC. Alternatives like Dream and WVR. An abundance of local/regional shows that keep getting better (Ring of Fire in my instance). New promotions that may be bad and fail, like EXC, or still have the chance to make it like Affliction. At least these promotions have a place where they can give it a shot and see if they can succeed. It seems like everyday we hit the net and discover a new promotion or someone interested in starting one.
All of this spreads the sport and the only real failure is to not try.

I have two really fun memories of Julius:
1. Steve hadn’t shown up in a while, so Julius would ask me where he was whenever I was at class. Well, one day, it occurred to Julius that Steve’s last name was similar to the word “Zucchini.” So, he comes over to me with this Cheshire cat-like grin on his face and almost yells “WHERE’S ZUCCHINI!?” And you could tell that he thought this was, like, the most clever thing anyone has ever said. He just stood there, proud of himself, and it was awesome.
Steve’s been called that since diaper school, just to be clear.
2. “I stack ibuprofen with advil.” I use that line to this day.
by Brett Jones on Nov 28, 2008 12:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I totally forgot that "I stack ibuprofen with advil." line. He said it like he everyone should be doing it and it cures everything. I beleive it came up when you dislocated my shoulder. I hope that man has some stomach lining left. He is a great BBJ teacher, but NOT a doctor.

Okay...
so after I posted mine I realized that it is way longer than everyone elses. I think being without a functioning laptop for the past week and a half (go to hell Toshiba) has left me with a lot of pent up writing energy. Expect a blitz from me once they get me a new AC adaptor.

I am thankful that Bloodyelbow is a troll-free zone, and that we have great writers and posters who act professionaly. I am thankful for all the great events we get in the next 2 months. I am thankful for the UFC, cause without them we wouldn’t even be having this discussion.

I’m thankful for finding an intelligent MMA site where the discussions aren’t inane ramblings. I’m thankful that the fans can also write up articles and get them promoted, so we don’t feel like mere observers. I’m thankful for Seth Petruzelli almost single-handedly imploding an entire league. I’m thankful that I finally found a sport I enjoy.

I am thankful to Bloody Elbow for not only giving myself, but others a place to express our opinions and discuss our differences regarding THE BEST SPORT EVER mma.
Secondly: I am thankful for the 3 shows we get coming up in December. What better way to get my mind off the fact that i will be spending Ridiculous amounts of money on my Daughter, Fiance, 12 Nieces & Nephews, and about 10-15 other people for christmas. Thank God for UFC 92!!!

I’m also thankful that mma is beginning to get some legitimate mainstream media coverage and that great athletes are taking mma seriously as a career which provides an exciting crop of future fighters. I am thankful for most of what everyone has already said. (Except maybe the Evans knocking out Liddell comment. You cut me deep there Warhand, ya cut me real deep.) This site is the best MMA site I have found. Also the great articles, and discussion that always follows. You guys are great and offer a great form of entertainment & area to debate personal views in a very mature way. Except Warhand. That shit was just childish dude. I am thankful for the internet because it allowed me to connect with like minded people that loved MMA before it was popular. I love that those same like minded people created websites where we could all meet and discuss it in an intelligent and entertaining manner.
