Clip of the Day: Lloyd Irvin, Journey of a Champion

Yes, there's no question I am absolutely 100% biased when it comes to anything Lloyd Irvin. If you didn't pick that up after the Deadspin.com incident, I don't know any other way to convey it to you. I started training at his school in Camp Springs and it was a truly formative experience for me. Part of the reason for that was because of what I witnessed in what Irvin had accomplished and could get others to accomplish. It's not merely a matter of toughness; it's an unfailing belief in the power of positivity and what a desire to improve and succeed can do for one's life or dreams.

Call me absurd or blind to more objective analysis. I don't care. Irvin is incredible teacher and individual. It is an honor to be able to work for and with him.

I used to train under one of his students, and he and nothing but incredible things to say about Lloyd. His advertising may seem over the top, but everything that is said he can back up 100%. Like steve said, I really hope I can meet him one day.

I don’t know if you’re still interested in coming out to Nashville MMA’s first event but it’s happening on December 11th.
We’re a Lloyd Irvin affiliate coached by Shawn Hammonds and Ed Clay, both of which are black belts under Lloyd.
On the card is Sean Pulizzano, another Lloyd Irvin black belt, Lance Patrick who is one of our muay thai teachers (and purple belt) and about seven or so other guys from the gym, many of which are very good.

why does he have a man crush?

What is wrong with looking up to somebody who has had an incredible journey through life that you admire and respect that you could follow in their footsteps?

Pop culture (the highest authority) says you can only do that if you follow it up with “no homo.”

Also: cool guy, but “Master Lloyd” sounds funny. Imagine “The Cruel Tutelage of Lloyd.” :-)

Master is the BJJ equivalent of professor.

It just sounds funny because Lloyd isn’t the kind of name you’d associate with a martial art.

Yeah, it’s not Mister Irvin in particular that sounds funny:

MASTER RICHARD!

MASTER LUKE!

MASTER JEMALEDDIN!

MASTER LLOYD!

Actually, that third one is pretty euphonious….

“Euphonious” is such an unpleasant sounding word.
