Renato "Babalu" Sobral Wins Strikeforce Championship

Bobby Southworth suffered a very deep cut above his right eye as the result of a left elbow from Renato "Babalu" Sobral in the first round of the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship.  Big John stopped the fight to allow the doctors to check it out, the fight was allowed to continue until the end of the round.  As Southworth sat on his stool it was determined he could not continue and the fight was stopped, awarding Sobral with a TKO win.

In notable undercard action Yves Edwards continued his backward slide with a decision loss to Duane "Bang" Ludwig, Kim Couture won via a dominant TKO in the first round against Lina Kvokov and Joe Riggs defeated Luke Stewart via second round TKO.

That was a nasty elbow and an even nastier cut.

I don’t get why they let it go until the end of the round, nothing really changed in 11 seconds. Stuff like that makes me scratch my head.

That cut

was DEEP!!! lol

I’m happy since I was going for Babalu all the way. Seems like a good guy, hes a great exciting fighter, very humble. Damn that belt is gorgeous!

He will always have a black mark to me for that choke on David Heath. Disrespectful and dangerous what he did.

by iiowyn on Nov 22, 2008 1:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It wasn't THAT dangerous.

Dana was right in cutting him but that was more of a statement he had to make.

by cauliflower_ears on Nov 22, 2008 2:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ignoring the ref is ALWAYS dangerous, and NEVER should be done…and honestly I think should be punished a bit more.

by iiowyn on Nov 22, 2008 2:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It was still pretty bad

Imagine if the guy got brain damage?

The point of tapping before you pass out is to avoid the risks that are associated with going unconscious.

It’s just as bad as if a guy puts on an armbar and he refuses to let go after his opponent taps out.

by achengy on Nov 22, 2008 3:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

John let it go because there were only 11 seconds to go. A doc looked at it, hell we all looked at it, fight over.

Do you see some kind of conspiracy?

by dualdiagnosis on Nov 22, 2008 3:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, I’m just wondering what changed in the 11 seconds. The doctor looked at it both times. It didn’t look like Babalu hit him in the last 11 seconds of the round, so the cut didn’t change.

If it was ok for him to fight the last 11 seconds of the round without the cutman fixing the cut, why wasn’t it ok for him to fight after the cutman worked on it?

The one problem in this sport is constancy in stoppages. It just looks really weird when a doctor can look at a cut, say it’s ok, then look at the same exact cut 11 seconds later and end the fight.

by Phildo on Nov 22, 2008 11:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I see what you’re saying but I think it was a courtesy, since no one wants to see a fight stopped with 11 seconds left in a round – especially a championship fight. Let it go, and see if it can be fixed between rounds when there’s more time to work on it.

by mythbuster on Nov 22, 2008 11:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well said, myth

Doctors are people, too. The thoughts going through the cut-man’s head while he’s looking at it are things like ‘where have I seen this before, how long was the recovery process, is this internal and external stitches material, any blood vessels right there, risk of infection’ etc..

The doc could simply have missed one of the components, or gotten it wrong the first time and seen it correctly the second time. Who knows.

If in doubt, I’d like to see them give the fighters the chance to continue through the end of the round/fight.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

They also try to stop/slow the bleeding in between rounds. I think if that’s not successful they halt the fight.

Good to see Big John reffing again, and I"m glad Babalu won – it seemed like Southworth was content to cagehump his way to a victory.

and side note – whats with the woman that fought Kim Couture? Just wow at the unprepared to be in a ring.

by mythbuster on Nov 21, 2008 11:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That was...

…odd to say the least.

As for Southworth…i couldn’t be any happier that he isn’t champion anymore. Nothing against the guy really, but Strikeforce puts on some hot shows and hot main events…and Southworth is a guy who just doesn’t always bring the heat in his fights. So good for Strikeforce in having yet another legit champ in a marquee division.

That had me scratching my head

saying why the eff is she even in the ring. Very funny stuff. Hopefully this is her last fight. Congrats to Couture, she probably had just watched Gina tape lol. She looked sharp.

by xFenixKnightx on Nov 22, 2008 12:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously, the other girl (Lina?) looked like she never got hit before. Good thing that fight was on a channel many people don’t get, or it could have set womens mma back quite a bit lol

I was also surprised how tiny they looked, when I think about Gina and Cyborg. These girls just looked fragile.

by mythbuster on Nov 22, 2008 9:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That wasn’t a fight, that was a hit. The undercard fights were painful to watch; bad MMA is pretty bad to watch.

by cyph on Nov 22, 2008 9:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True

I thought it pretty interesting that the PFC fights from the night before were actually pretty good, and the bigger named Strikeforce card was ho-hum at best.

But good or bad, free fights don’t cost me much so I can’t complain. :)

by mythbuster on Nov 22, 2008 9:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Now that they have K-1 elite level kickboxing, I can’t complain about HDNET. It makes paying my $60 a month for DISH worth it.

by cyph on Nov 22, 2008 9:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

was it even a good fight?

by the last emperor on Nov 22, 2008 12:01 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Not really but the elbow was vicious. Too bad they kept on booing him…

woops…I was typing a reply to TLE when scott said that,.,

yeah it was an ok fight

Not sure it was a joke or not =) Tom Atencio is in Canada getting married to Lance…

Frank Shamrock...

Pulled the same gag last year to Josh Thomson

awesome

by banter on Nov 22, 2008 12:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

was it even a good fight?

The fight went much like this:
laynpray, cagehump cagehump cagehump elbow, doctor stoppage.

You didn’t miss anything, tho the Scott Smith KO was pretty sweet in the main event.

by mythbuster on Nov 22, 2008 9:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

So, who's the middleweight contender?

Cung Le helped call the action on that MW fight, but we still don’t know who and when he’s fighting next. The question isn’t who Scott Smith will fight next. The question is when will the champ get off his pedistal and put his belt on the line. Grrrr. Cung needs to put up or shut up. Lots of people deserve a shot at his belt.

by Jaydoggydog on Nov 22, 2008 12:39 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I personally don’t give a shit about the SF belt. I just want them to make him awesome and then send him to the UFC with a bow.

by subo on Nov 22, 2008 12:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cung Le is just living his 15 minutes of fame.. He’s gone Hollywood.. Why? I don’t even know. He beat Shamrock and that’s it… I don’t consider him an MMA fighter.

by steveoc24 on Nov 22, 2008 1:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Le has proved to be an exciting striker. I still have many questions about his overall game. He definitely is pursuing other interests, like acting, and we need to remember, he is getting up there in age. I expect to see him fight a few more times, but only if they are “big” fights.

I can’t believe Scott Smith let out that Tom Atencio is Gay…

Now everyone knows he’s a cocksucker.

I called Bang pulling the ‘upset’ this morning.

Awesome. Awesome.

I hear that he is going to get a shot at Thompson now. We will see if it happens and he can even the score.

I know he was going to go up to 170, but this opportunity will put it off for a while.

It amazes me how no one has anything bad to say about Strikeforce or any of their cards. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! I have no idea how they turn a profit.

by KneesnBows on Nov 22, 2008 1:27 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

This was a great card. Sometimes the fights don’t live up to the hype, that shit happens. Strikeforce puts on great events.

by steveoc24 on Nov 22, 2008 1:37 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And that includes the UFC.

by subo on Nov 22, 2008 1:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This card had a lot of bad fights, no two ways about it.

by cyph on Nov 22, 2008 9:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think I have seen every televised SF card for the past 3 years and they are normally very good. Last night was forgettable but that happens.

by banter on Nov 22, 2008 9:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah! Babalu wins!!! Nasty cut. I hope he gets back to his winning ways – any chance UFC will take him back? Given Dana White’s recent bullying tactics, I doubt it, but I can hope.

I hope they don’t. You don’t ignore the ref just to make a point when you are choking someone unconscious. Outside of the cage, that would be assault.

by iiowyn on Nov 22, 2008 2:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Outside the cage, anything these guys do would be assault…

by Mike Fagan on Nov 22, 2008 3:09 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

lol

The man makes a point.

by mythbuster on Nov 22, 2008 9:02 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He got me there…but I still heavily disagree with what Babalu did. That was intent to harm above and beyond winning the fight.

by iiowyn on Nov 22, 2008 10:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I agree with you, absolutely. You can’t do stuff like that, even in a cage/ring. I remember a few years back a hockey player attacked another one with his stick (hit him in the head) and actually faces legal charges on it – so I’m wondering, if Babalu could have faced charges if he had held on longer than he did. As someone mentioned above, he could have caused permanent injury (brain damage).

In any case, when the ref says stop, stop.

by mythbuster on Nov 22, 2008 10:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Outside the cage

Saying i’m gonna beat your ass – is assault

is battery.

by misterjonez on Nov 22, 2008 5:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dunno, the card was kind of a dud IMO. Sometimes that happens but there really weren’t many fights worth commenting on.
Too bad because I had a free night minus children and lots of beer.
I guess I was ruined from 91.

by pr0cs on Nov 22, 2008 2:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

BIg yawner, the only fight that was good lasted about 10 seconds.

by dualdiagnosis on Nov 22, 2008 3:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Babalu-I know there is a faction that thinks he is a terrible guy for choking out the trash talker, but imo, he has paid teh price. Babalu is one of the best fighters around and has a very balanced attack. No way that he shouldn’t get another chance in the UFC at some point.

Ludwig-His stock is rising and he comes to fight. Can fight at LW or MW. I expect 2009 to be a busy year for him. I would love to see him get another chance at Gomi.

Smith-OK, let’s see Cung/Smith. Great KO.

Martin-I would much rather have seen a better opponent for Smith. Martin seems to be on his way down for sure.

Couture-Watching it over, most of her punches weren’t even landing. Not really her fault, since her opponent was turning away and running. That was terrible and that girl’s license to fight should be pulled.

Riggs-Always good to see the Diesel come out on top.

Southworth-Physically he looks good, but I don’t think he has the tools to beat top level fighters.
