Fedor Emelianenko, Gegard Mousasi to Compete in ADCC 2009

Well, this is the greatest news in the Milky Way:

In the ever expanding "quest for the best" ADCC Championships is proud to announce that two of the World’s top fighters have agreed to compete in the 2009 ADCC event. ADCC is proud to announce that Pride and Affliciton Champion Fedor Emelianenko, widely considered the World’s best fighter and 2008 Dream Middleweight Champion Gregard Mousassi are set to compete in ADCC 2009. ADCC Europe President Marko Leistén confirmed the fighter’s presence after a meeting with the two fighters manager Aby Echteld in Holland 8th November.

Fedor Emelianenko, after conquering the World of MMA, wants to show the World he is also the best Submission Grappler in the World. Fedor want to make history and expand on the pioneer spirit of what Mark Kerr did in the late 90's when he was the Champion of Pride and became the weight and Absolute Champion of ADCC and went on to defend his title in the Superfights for 2 editions.

Mousassi, the winner of the 2008 Dream Middleweight Grand Prix where he defeated former World ABJJ Absolute and ADCC middleweight Champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the final, also wants to test his ground skills against the top names in Submission Grappling. This sets up some humongous possible match-ups such as a re-match with "Jacare" or facing current ADCC Middleweight Champion and rising U.F.C. star Demian Maia.

I have always wondered how Fedor would fare against world-class jiu-jitsu players in sport BJJ and now I guess we get to find out. And to think: if Fedor competes in the Open Weight category, a potential match with Marcelo Garcia is available. 2007's ADCC was incredible and 2009's is already shaping up to be as equally filled with talent and more celebrity than ever.

WOW!

Sounds great!
I don’t think I would ever picture Fedor or Mousasi in ADCC.

Thanks for another great post Luke.

anyone know

where the 2009 ADCC is being held?

by Nick Travaglini on Nov 21, 2008 2:50 PM EST reply actions

They haven’t been held in Abu Dhabi since the 2001 edition.

In all seriousness, I did see a rumour a little bit back that it was going to be in Tokyo.

Hahahahahaha….

Oh, that wasn’t a joke? Hrmmm.

It’ll be interesting to see how he performs without the use of punches and whatnot to set up openings.

by Tha Realness on Nov 21, 2008 2:51 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, but Fedor isn’t much of a guard passer even in MMA. There are so many more things to worry about in pure grappling than simply a lack of punches to set up openings.

by Luke Thomas on Nov 21, 2008 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

Oh I know

Which makes it even more intriguing.

Neither is Monson…

by Simco on Nov 21, 2008 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Monson is a guard passer in sub grappling.

Fedor will get eaten alive

By the top grapplers. Maia, Jacare, Garcia, Roger Gracie all would eat Fedor up in a grappling format. There are complex setups and chess moves that I am sure Fedor has never even seen before. WIth his aggressive and mainly-judo style, he will get tapped by most everyone who makes the final 16. I could be wrong, but I cannot visualize how he out-grapples any of them.

Fedor fans seem to have some of the most hardcore, zealous fans around, who pounce on any anti-Fedor comment – just playing off the stereotype. No symbols where none intended.

This also applies for GSP, Anderson Silva, B.J. Penn, etc. etc.

How many sambo-style grapplers go to ADCC? If many judoka participate, his style won’t be much of a surprise.

i have to see this

will it be broadcast on tv or the internet or something?

by bearcox13 on Nov 21, 2008 3:09 PM EST reply actions

Probably streamed on the net and released on DVD thereafter.

by Luke Thomas on Nov 21, 2008 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Every (other) year I promise myself I’ll watch ADCC one way or another, and every year I miss it. If/when they release information on how to watch, I’d love to have that info.

by AJB on Nov 21, 2008 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Fedor will do very good. but then again I’ve never really seen the guy grapple without use of punches. He sure armbars a lot of people but pure grappling? I still have Roger winning the whole thing

by Discman2 on Nov 21, 2008 3:20 PM EST reply actions

Fedor was pretty content to sit in Nog’s guard and hit him a bunch for 20 minute intervals – which won’t work here. He must be making some cash, because all this can possibly to is hurt him – if he wins it he’s still invincible, if he loses he’s not.

That being said, I would burn down villages to see Roger v Fedor.

by Derek Suboticki on Nov 21, 2008 3:24 PM EST reply actions

How would it hurt him? No one expects him to win and he’s already been dethroned in Sambo. If anything, he has nothing to lose.

by Simco on Nov 21, 2008 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Awesome. Sure to bring out ALL of the top competition.

I agree that he probably won’t get past the top BJJ practitioners, but they probably wouldn’t fare well in Sambo either.

I wish HDNet could find a way to broadcast at least some of the ADCC.

Could you imagine if a UFC fighter got Fedor to tap?

Dana would make a statement so obnoxious that the entire internet would explode due to the reaction.

Phildo

maybee randy will compete as well. ooooohhhh!

by bdw on Nov 21, 2008 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Or just say ’that’s why he’s not here.’

Rub it in a little.

by Derek Suboticki on Nov 22, 2008 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

Fedor beats Roger Gracie and Robert Drysdale at the same time in the finals via double armbar from the guard

by skwirrl on Nov 21, 2008 7:07 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to see Fedor work his sambo leglocks in a grappling competition as he never seems to go for them in MMA, but certainly covers them in-depth in his seminars and DVD.

by Scott Haber on Nov 21, 2008 7:48 PM EST reply actions

He might get set up or put in a bad position with those top guys, but he also knows how to escape everything, and with his strength he can probably power out of whatever he wants
