Quote of the Day: Jon Fitch Fires Back

“Dana is saying ‘Oh Swick said he doesn’t care what his manager said’ or whatever...No Swick has a special deal with the video game agreements and a some of this other stuff. A lot of these guys that he says he doesn’t have a problem with are guys that got special contracts along the way. They don’t have the same contracts as everybody else. They get special things, which is fine, and I’m not even asking for those things… The only thing that we stated and stated over time is that we don’t want to sign lifetime contracts.”

-- Jon Fitch on Fight Network Radio with Mauro Ranallo.

Special contracts? Well, if true, that changes matters considerably.

The one thing that cannot be disputed is that the longer this goes, the angrier White will likely become. White has no intentions of making matters within the UFC ready for public consumption. As this issue races through the MMA media and beyond, more and more of how the UFC practices business are being brought to light - for better or worse.

I still love this Fitch quote
He wanted our lifetime. He wanted our souls forever

Yeah, that’s a bit much.

by Luke Thomas on Nov 20, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The interesting thing about that comment is that now, inevitably, people will take it seriously and both defend Fitch against the evil succubus that is the UFC and attack Fitch for not being enough of a “fucking fighter” to give his soul to the UFC.

Just a touch too melodramatic.

by subo on Nov 20, 2008 5:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I just read the MMAWEEKLY interview with Fitch......

He basically said that the UFC fucked up and PROMISED All the fighter rights to the makers of the video game. So , now they have to go back and HAVE have the fighters sign this. ???Basically, what he is saying is that the UFC promised the rights of ALL the fighters in the 2009 UFC video game WITHOUT HAVING THOSE rights TO SIGN OVER……

Sounds to me that typical monopoly UFC business. They screwed up, and make their fighters fix it ….OR ELSE

by fightfan on Nov 20, 2008 5:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I keep reading those

stories about all those fighters shot in the back of the head.

by dualdiagnosis on Nov 20, 2008 5:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't sound to me like this is gonna work out with Fitch coming back., He sounds very angry at Dana.

I don’t blame him either. Swick is getting better contract incentives than Fitch? How is that even possible? Do they not realize Fitch is a top 3 Welterweight in the world?

by lbk on Nov 20, 2008 5:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What's in it for Dana and the UFC

to have fighters on the payroll who publicly fight with them?

by dualdiagnosis on Nov 20, 2008 5:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s important to make the distinction that this figther in particular is also not a particularly strong drawing card for the organization, despite his ample talent. So, whereas the organization is obliged to negotiate with a Tito Ortiz, who has been similarly critical of the UFC, it is because Ortiz has made the organization lots and lots of money over the years.

If Fitch had done similar, he would not have been cut, as he’d enjoy a similar “special” contract to Mike Swick’s.

And that’s not to suggest that Swick’s ever drawn a dime for the UFC, just that the UFC feels that he has more potential to do so (at the very least). Apparently the UFC feels very strongly about his previous knockouts and his time spent on The Ultimate Fighter.

by Brett Jones on Nov 20, 2008 5:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s what makes this even more important. When the lesser known fighters start sticking up for themselves, that’s when Zuffa knows it has a problem on its hands.

by George Lucas on Nov 20, 2008 5:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There's 50 other guys begging

to fight for the UFC for every Fitch there is.

by dualdiagnosis on Nov 20, 2008 5:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s….something.

I’d suggest that when a lesser known fighter sticks up for themselves it enables ZUFFA to more casually send him packing.

There’s very little chance that this incident will go through 15 months of litigation, or pre-litigation, or whatever really did end up happening in the case of ZUFFA v. Randy Couture. And even after all of that, even with the opportunities presented to Randy, he wound up back with the “evil” UFC.

I’m not sure what that says for Fitch.

by Brett Jones on Nov 20, 2008 5:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm pretty sure Dana wanted everyone to silently sign their likeness away..

so he could pocket millions in the next 20 years. That’s nice and good, but there are HUGE implications for fighters looking to protect themselves. This goes way beyond a video game people.

by lbk on Nov 20, 2008 5:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I may be mistaken, but this isn’t your complete likeness.

The only thing it’s exclusive for is video games. I don’t see how the UFC making a shirt with your name on it 10 years from now is going to hurt you, no matter what your situation is.

by Phildo on Nov 20, 2008 5:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but

The UFC has another lifetime licensing deal for your likeness for merchandising also. They also tried to force fighters to sign that.

by skwirrl on Nov 20, 2008 5:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That one isn’t exclusive, you can still make your own shirts.

Are they really going to make a shirt for you if you leave? Are you worried about the “Jon Fitch Sucks” shirt that GSP is going to wear to the cage for his next fight?

by Phildo on Nov 20, 2008 6:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Swick’s incentives or “special contract” may be because Swick was a cast member on The Ultimate Fighter. One could argue that Swick has better name recognition among the casual audience and is therefore more valuable than Fitch. Not saying that’s true, but it is one possible explanation.

It’s also important to keep in mind that we don’t know many details about fighter contracts. It’s possible, I would say likely, that there is a lot more behind this dispute than what we know.

by Andy R on Nov 20, 2008 5:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I definitely agree with you on this:

“It’s possible, I would say likely, that there is a lot more behind this dispute than what we know.”

Absolutely. There HAS to be more involved.

by subo on Nov 20, 2008 5:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I love that Dana has these weird dichotomies in his personality. He wants fighters to work with him and walk off a cliff if he asks, but is completely unwilling to compromise on trivial issues. He wants the media to cover the sport legitimately, but gets all in a huff when people report the Jon Fitch story in a negative light.

Dude needs to realize business is a two way street.

by Mike Fagan on Nov 20, 2008 5:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I liked when he said, “We’re all in this together, bro.” The way he fires people on a whim, I can’t imagine too many fighters feel that they are in it with him.

I shaved my pubes today and right before I was about to trash it I remembered…

2 years ago a pharmacutical research company I worked for wanted the rights to them ( sample) … Actually they wanted it from every employee.

If you didnt provide it you couldnt work there anymore.

I wasn’t comfortable with the fact that they wanted the lifetime rights to my pube sample and more over – exclusivity… I just wasnt comfortable with that because I thought who knows maybe a few years down the road pubes might become the new green energy – a gas for your car or something – so I wanted to hold onto it.

Anyway thought I would share as I got a flash of deja vu for a minute.

This guy is officially a bigger dumbass than Roger Huerta, where was Fitch when Randy was humbeld and Tito got sent packing?. You don’t win when you trash Dana and the UFC, this guy might as well disappear from the face of the planet because he’s gonna be irrelevant for the rest of his career. Congratulations Jon you can now play the Martyr role on the unemployment line and once you pick up your next fight check and it’s mission several zero’s remember this momment because it was the momment you f’ed up your career.

I love Dana’s response to the media interest in this story:

“"It’s like all the media wants to jump up and go ‘Oh, the UFC! The UFC!’ Shut up! Shut up. Every one of you, shut your mouth. Mind your business.”

Even though this very clearly IS the media’s business, I’d say the changes of them obliging him as usual are quite good.

by subo on Nov 20, 2008 5:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I really don’t know. Probably Fitch just because of the fact his livelihood could be destroyed in a snap by Dana.

Where is Fitch going to go? Affliction? they are going broke and won’t sign him for anything worth a damn (well actually… they might be stupid enough to give him 300,000 to fight some under 500 fighter). Affliction is on the way out. Strikeforce? make 10g a fight with no sponsor money? even if he fought 4x a year he will only make 40,000… not counting expenses, medical insurance, and the fact he would have no competition. Is he willing ot go to Japan… and fight… who? Would japan even want him? he doesn’t seem like their kind of fighter.

Dana/UFC is being stupid… but its not like people buy ppv’s to watch fitch. He has already been dismantled by GSP. he can be replaced

but damn…

Gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry. Fitch is no Nico Belic but if UFC game titles became best sellers, we’re talking a massive new income stream for UFC.

It's not just over a video game. It's about merchandising as well..

you REALLY think this is over a video game? It’s about not making a cent on your likeness for your lifetime. I think that warants Fitch’s reaction and am shocked more fighters haven’t followed suit.

It’s frankly bizarre how tightly Dana has controle over the fighters.

Read what the president of American Top Team has to say about the deals, either at mmajunkie or on my fanpost.

by subo on Nov 20, 2008 6:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thats one opinion, Ed Soares.
There are other agents who state otherwise.

Read what Cesar Gracie and other managers said below.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Nov 20, 2008 6:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

For those that want the Opinions of Managers from the First Merchandising Deal:
Cesar Gracie (who guides The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner Nate Diaz), J.T. Stewart (who handles business affairs for former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin) and a handful of other managers who asked not to be identified in this story are in the growing phalanx of those who have voiced concerns. Specifically, they’re concerned about the more than half-dozen “deal-breaker” clauses in the agreement — mainly: the indefinite term of perpetuity, made worse by a fighter’s inability to opt out.

Essentially, they claim, the deal allows the UFC to control an important section of a fighter’s career by determining which licensing ventures he can or cannot enter into — during his career and beyond.

by Benicio on Nov 20, 2008 6:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely. There are other fighters who were rumored to be disgruntled, for example GSP, Tito, War Machine, etc.

GSP did not want to sign this and probably got it removed from his contract. He has yet to be announced as a fighter in the game as well, I believe.

Come to think of it, I always wondered why more fighters weren’t released and I had to keep watching Forrest vs. Rampage over and over. Or was it Chuck. I forget.

Now we’re seeing more fighters be released, I wonder how much of it is by design, how much is by fighters turning in these completed agreements.

Special Contracts Being Reported 5 months Ago
While many have raised questions and even flat-out denied the chance to sign the UFC’s new agreement, the organization has not been eager to change the language in the deal save for its biggest stars at this point. That may change if fighters continue to hold out. After all, what good is official UFC merchandise, suggested one manager, if you don’t have the name and face of a fighter to go with it?

Here is some of the link:
It is being reported that Fitch spoke with UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta this afternoon and the parties managed to resolve their differences, and the fighter will sign the much talked about video game licensing agreement.

Fitch still stands by his assertion that he didn’t appreciate the way Dana White treated the fighter when attempting to negotiate a deal for video game licensing.
