Jon Fitch's Management, UFC Talking Again

So says Greg Savage and Loretta Hunt:
Jon Fitch was released from the UFC on Wednesday, but a discussion has reopened with the promotion.
Bob Cook and Zinkin Entertainment, who manage Fitch and other fighters from the American Kickboxing Academy, told Sherdog.com on Thursday afternoon that talk has resumed with the UFC, but they would not comment on the exact nature of the discussion.
There are enough nuances to this issue that can be explored in any of the other posts on this site. For now I'll simply say I hope the parties come to an agreement. I want Jon Fitch in the UFC. I know many others do as well.

Good,
this says something about all parties involved I think. The fact that they can walk away from the negotiating table when they reach an impass & still come back is good news.

Absolutely right.
I think Dana just gets heated sometimes and it gets in the way of his work. But of course, the same thing happens with fighters.

I think that’s easily the least likely scenario.

Gee maybe it was the fact that Cook realized he would be done… and his camp would be done if he was blacklisted from the UFC.
Think about it who will come to you if you’re blacklisted from Zuffa?
Even if you don’t want to fight for Zuffa the fact that you go into negotiations with another organization where they know Zuffa isn’t a possible suitor kills your earnings.
And how many fighters will ken pavia steal from you?

Good point. It appears that common sense is now starting to creep back into both sides. Hopefully something positive gets done. I too want to see Fitch in the UFC. As with Kos and the other AKA fighters. Fighting “the man” is one thing, having to feed yourself or your family is another.

It says in the story that they’re going to release Koscheck and Cain Velasquez too?!?!?! WTF are they thinking. A lot of people think Velasquez is one of the people that will get a title shot. And I think it could’ve been next year.
All I can say is that I really want to see what Cain and Josh say if they win their next fight, that is, if they even interview them. Who knows, they’ll probably just keep Cain on the undercard now to keep him silent. But it’s going to be interesting if Koscheck wins and gets an interview. This may not end well for the UFC.

While I am certain
losing Cain was not what they wanted, I do not think that losing Koscheck was as big of a blow.

They wanted him to lose to Hazelett and get the boot anyhow.

Yeah. Mm hmm.
As long as we’re dreaming, I’d like a pony.

Can’t give ya the pony but i can offer some perspective. Kos was deathly afraid of being cut before the Hazelett fight which is the main reason he was so emotional when he won. He was making more money than the rest of the fighters at his level due to his TUF notoriety. The UFC loves replacing non-draws with younger and cheaper fighters. Thats why whatever new TUF crew comes out fills out the cards for 6-8 months.

I bet Koscheck wasn’t very happy when he heard that he was getting cut after his next fight.
Odds he gets any … of the night bonus if this isn’t resolved by that card? That’s a shitty spot to be in going into a fight. Knowing you’re going to be cut and not to expect any extra cash after the fight.

This almost seems like the UFC strong arming guys in order to get them to change camps/representation. I don’t blame either side fully, but there is a problem somewhere.
The Rockies traded Matt Holliday after he rejected a very strong deal. His agent Scott Boras is known for bad dealings, and they just didn;t want to go through it with him and still lose Matt. Some of these guys are just out of control.

“Almost seems like”? I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what it is.
by AJB on Nov 20, 2008 3:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, i know Dana wants what is best for him and the UFC, and the agent want what is best for themselves and their clients. Unfortunately, I think somewhere along the way, both sides have lost sight of what is best, a fair deal that works well for both sides. Why would you want a disgruntled employee that is pissed because you haven’t treated them fairly OR why would you want a huge deal that keeps you someplace you may not be happy?? It just seems these guys have lost touch with reality in some instances.

UFC clearly wants Jon Fitch
I’m sure they want Kos and Cain, too. AKA might have really shot themselves in the foot challenging Dana here.
I’m rooting for them to sign, the agents to find new work and a fighter’s union to become the topic du jour (only, like, lots of jours).

your responsibility, our power
that just goes to show the power of the fans. and wanted to say thank you and many other sites for doing the responsible thing and harping on this almost relentlessly, much like “standgate”. we dont have ESPN to make the UFC accountable.

I disagree heartily that the fans had anything to do with this, but I also approve of well informed and vocal fans as well, emphasis on the well informed.

Agreed. It’s nice to see this thing bandied about for nearly an entire day now with some actual progress being made in advancing the group’s knowledge and perspective of the topic.

That original article about Fitch getting fired has over 500 comments now. I believe that’s more than the last UFC PPV show.

This could simply be a case of cooler heads prevailing. All parties are better off coming to some sort of agreement in this case.
by Andy R on Nov 20, 2008 3:22 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
This could be true. No one wins by them parting ways. Everyone COULD win if they can work out a deal.

Dana will get his way here. It was them who broke down, not Dana. Like mmalogic said, these guys are completely finished as MMA agents if the UFC blackballs them. Plus AKA will drop them 1 by 1. I suspect Fitch will be back in the UFC and in the videogame.

lol, like they didn’t know that was going to happen already. I mean if the dude terminates you, I’m pretty sure he had weighed the consequences and determined that said fighters were expendable.
