Jon Fitch Comments on Being Cut
Fronted from the FanPosts to the front page by Luke Thomas.
Honestly the contract wasn't even that big of a deal. We're not getting paid for it anyways, and it's not a deal where I'm actually going to get another deal with a video game agency. I don't have that kind of pull, most guys don't. It has nothing to do with that. It's that they brought this contract to us and basically kicked in our front door, came in guns blazing, and said 'sign this contract or you're dead.
I am the UFC's bastard son. I mean, from the get go. I don't even know how better to explain it. They didn't have any regard or care for me whatsoever. There's nothing more I want than to be the UFC champ, but something like this and they're going to throw me away?
I also have confidence in the fact that I'm one of the best fighters in the world. I'm going to find a home, and I'm going to find a way to make money no matter what the deal is. I will not be treated and talked to like a dog.
It's not like I've been bad mouthing them or doing anything negative toward the UFC at all. All I've done is go out there and fight my ass off. I'm at a loss. I don't even know what to think right now. I'm still kind of in shock.
This situation needs to be remedied. This guy is one of the top fighters in the world and has been abused over something as silly as video game rights. He seems genuine that it's more about the lack of respect they showed him than anything else.

Man I saw more power to him
those knocking on him for allowing himself to get cut need to understand that sometimes you just gotta stand on principal.
WAR JOHN FITCH
im not impressed with your performance
Seriously. Jon Fitch guy has brass balls.
Mike Swick’s one of my favorite fighters and he immediately called up Dana to say that he was with the UFC. Swick is doing what he has to do to keep food on his table and I understand that. He hasn’t one 8 in a row and fought for the title yet but Jon Fitch is standing on principles and fighting the machine.
How do you not like this guy?
The Ballad of Jon
Jon, the man they call Jon

And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now

Hell, he was cut from the Ultimate Fighter while at the airport, getting ready to board a plane to do the show. This was after he quit his job and put his life on hold the be on TUF. Then, he gets in the UFC and is constantly being relegated to the undercard despite his victories, appearing on the main card once in his first five fights. Instead, he was passed up by guys who appeared on the reality show. He ultimately keeps winning and eventually defeats reality show winner Diego Sanchez, the guy who took his spot on TUF. Fitch fights for the title and goes 5 rounds with one of the top p4p fighters IN THE WORLD, showing an unparalleled will to win and an iron jaw despite his technical disadvantages.
Then, he decides its not the best decision to let the UFC own his likeness for eternity, just in case the sport gets even bigger. He tells them it might be a little more fair to do, say, a contract lasting TEN YEARS. The UFC says “no, sign it or you’re cut.” Fitch puts his fucking foot down and says “SUCK MY BRASS BALLS. YOU GUYS MIGHT HAVE THE POWER BUT I HAVE MY FUCKING DIGNITY. NICE KNOWING YOU.”
Yesterday, Jon Fitch was one of my favorite fighters out there. Today, he is easily number one.
Well, and with Jon not doing what Swick did and telling his manager to piss up a rope (figuratively speaking, of course).

This just got posted on mmamania.com
"This is not an attack on Jon Fitch. It’s not an attack on any one fighter. We have chosen not to do business with this camp called AKA. These guys have never, ever, ever treated us like partners. They’re always fighting over stupid, stupid (stuff) and negotiating over stuff that makes no sense. They’re negotiating like they’ve got Mel Gibson and this thing is the biggest movie ever being made. You know what I’m saying? The reality is, we’re not even sanctioned in Massachusetts or New York … (and) we’re going into all these different countries trying to do these different things. And I’ve got these guys that basically don’t want to be partners with me. You’ve got morons — morons — that are running these fighters’ lives. But to tell you the truth, one of the fighters from AKA called me and said, "Listen, I don’t care what these managers say or what they’re doing. I make my own decisions and my decision is, I’m with you. I’m your partner, I’m in.’ And this was before we even told AKA we wouldn’t be doing business with them any more. So this really isn’t an attack on Jon Fitch or any personal fighter. We’re just choosing not to do business with AKA any more. We’re not going to do business with them. And listen, there’s other guys out there that they can go do business with; they’re just not going to do business with me. Now there’s rumors out there, I know, about, ‘It’s over a video game deal. It’s over the ancillary rights agreement. It’s over this, that.’It’s over a lot of different things. It’s not one specific fighter or one specific thing. It’s about a lot of different things with a lot of these fighters. And you know what? This is more than just AKA. There’s other camps out there that we’re having trouble doing business with. And at the end of the day, this is a business. We run a business just like any other business. You come in, you do your job with your company and you get paid. And the guys that don’t want to do business with you — then go work somewhere else. It’s as easy as that. You don’t have to do business with us. There’s other people out there you can do it with."
Take it for what it is. Sounds like UFC is done dealing with the Mark Dion’s of the world.
I say whatever, in my business, if no one wants to agree to our terms or our price. Find another partner.

"We’re looking for guys who want to work with us and not against us, and frankly I’m just so [expletive] sick of this [expletive] it’s not even funny," White said from Honolulu, where he flew Wednesday from Toronto to hold a news conference to announce the B.J. Penn-Georges St. Pierre fight for UFC 94 on Jan. 31 in Las Vegas.
"Affliction is still out there trying to build its company. Let [Fitch] go work with them. Let him see what he thinks of those [expletives]. [Expletive] him. These guys aren’t partners with us. [Expletive] them. All of them, every last [expletive] one of them."
Dana also said that about Jon Fitch and AKA. Dana can do business whatever way he wants, but so can fighters. They don’t have to play ball on his terms, and it would certainly seem their is a sort of vendetta against these guys because they wouldn’t do exactly what he wanted. Dana has made this very personal.
I won't stop watching the UFC over this
But I sure as hell will watch whatever PPV Jon Fitch is on as well.
i promiste to download whatever PPV John Fitch is NOT on!

Good for him. No one deserves to be treated like a dog. Sounds like maybe the UFC doesn’t deserve him.
I really hope we get to watch him again soon, because he’s hella entertaining and a top 5 welterweight in my opinion.
UFC needs to be careful, if they lose too many guys to other startups, it’s going to create a draw for them. Right now the UFC IS their recognized fighters and Fitch is one of them. If he goes to dream, that’s one reason for me to go and watch Dream more.
The UFC is nothing without their fighters, if they don’t respect them and treat them properly, it will be their downfall.
He is totally correct about the “bastard son” thing. If I remember correctly, he was something like 4-0 in the UFC before he got on a live broadcast. He was always pushed off of the televised card to make room for reality show guys.
But he just kept winning till they couldn’t ignore him. Very impressive.
Show a little respect to the UFC and sign the deal.
Respect is a two way street. They paid you $169,000 for a title fight with GSP. That’s respect. Jon Fitch earned the shit out of that shot, but not the right to thumb his nose at standard contract language.
How standard? Randy, Anderson and Chuck have it in theirs. Sorry, Jon, I like you, but if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for you.
by Derek Suboticki on Nov 20, 2008 2:21 PM EST reply actions
Read my Fanpost “The Argument for Fitch.” Randy, Anderson, and Chuck aren’t going to still be fighting when this sport blows up even bigger and that contract language actually matters. Randy and Chuck are old and Anderson says he’s going to retire in a year. Fitch is 30 years old. He’s got another decade left in the sport and hasn’t earned close to the money those guys make. That language is going to directly affect him. Plus, the reason he’s pissed isn’t based just on the contract language but the ultimatum they gave him and unwillingness to negotiate. I’m sure they would’ve bended a little for any of those guys.
To quote dropkick101 on "respect":

Then, he made $169,000 in a single fight. It’s a great story, and this chapter of it sucks.

Fitch keeps saying it’s about the lifetime game licensing – since he carefully states his precise problem, unlike like Couture’s “It’s about respect” vagueness, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“Fitch keeps saying it’s about the lifetime game licensing” which is about money.

Or it could be that the dude just wants to be treated fairly instead of being forced to give up any right the UFC demands from him.
Had he signed the contract, the UFC would owned control over depictions of his face for life. How would that have been fair at any price?

Particularly if that price is $0. Sign away your likeness for life for little to no compensation. What if he did that, stayed in the UFC and becomes a PPV draw (hypothetically speaking)? Could he have a tiny cut off of them pimping his likeness to make money? Nope, he already signed that right away forever.
The only place that number comes from is Dana White’s mouth. I don’t doubt it’s truth but I’ll bet that includes the endorsement money as well. The Minnesota figures weren’t released but I remember Fitch making a base of between $30k-40k a fight for previous fights. H received a $60k bonus for the title fight. If you subtract that bonus, I doubt the UFC paid Fitch a base pay of $119k for that fight. The figure definitely includes endorsements.
Go into your boss's office and try what Fitch did
I’d like to see anyone who has been posting on these Fitch threads walk into their boss’s office and thell them their business practices are lousy. Then on top of that, tell them you’re not going to go along with a plan of theirs, even though people far bigger in the company than you have all agreed to it.
Think you’d still have a job by the time you left the office?
does Fitch have a job?
besides, selling microwaves at BestBuy isn’t quite as specialized and rare a talent as trying to beat people up in a cage.
im not impressed with your performance
I’ve told my authorities to their face that they were wrong and I wouldn’t go along with their ideas. I was roundly shuffled out. In this instance, I also turned out being right – the office almost went bankrupt because of their plans.

What a terrible analogy.
Fitch is an indpendent contractor, not some company man wage slave. When his employer decides to change the stipulations of his employment, it’s absolutely his prerogative to agree or disagree with those terms- or even to negotiate for better terms.
by George Lucas on Nov 20, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions
I call bull$hit
This sounds like a bunch of old women talking. Hey Fitch, you want to keep fighting in the UFC? Take some responsibility for yourself, realize its business, not personal, and call Dana White. Its that simple. He said so himself. His beef is with your management, not you. If the contract is not a big deal, then resolve the situation. Stop making this personal.
by Nick Travaglini on Nov 20, 2008 2:40 PM EST reply actions
Agreed.
He’s lending himself to the power struggle between his management and the UFC, knowingly or otherwise.
Call Dana and tell him what you want to do. Dana is good to guys who are above board with him and show him respect throughout their disagreements.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
Management is meant to represent the fighter and act on his behalf – if Fitch’s manager agreed to have him fight without pay, don’t you think Fitch would get involved then? Fitch has every right to intercede on his own accord.

It doesn’t sound to me like he’s making it personal to be honest. He simply refuses to be treated a certain way. If anything Dana is the one that’s taking it personal. Cussing and calling them all F***S and claiming that they’re opposing them. The UFC is acting like China. Get on board with us and do not question what we say and we’ll take care of you, just take our word for it. Tell that to Andre and Werdum.
Respect is listening to each other, not throwing out ultimatums. If a man respects his wife, he states clearly what he thinks and wants, and then listens to how she feels about it. If she doesn’t feel right about it they talk about it until both sides feel right. Same thing with companies that have high integrity. They need something that works for them, but they understand that it must be fair to their workers. The fact that Dana doesn’t give any substantial logic for their demands definitely plays against him. The UFC is not altruistic, they’re going to do whatever it takes to profit and make the most money possible. Dana’s acting like John Fitch is doing this to spite him. Fitch has always presented himself as a truly class act.
Fitch wasn’t the one who made it personal. White was the one who told him to fuck himself if he didn’t sign on the dotted line.

Bunch of crybabies in MMA and on the forums apparently. Sorry they hurt your feelings Fitch, you can go hang with Tom Beard if you want.
What is all the swooning for what Fitch did come from? He takes a gun and shoots himself, and everyone thinks he’s some kind of hero?
Kurt Cobain shot himself because he couldn’t handle the fame and the drugs. Fitch wants to maintain a modicum of dignity. I don’t see anything wrong with not wanting to prostitute yourself.

I tend to think that’s how this will end as well. Though, it’s tough to blame folks who take umbrage over this on principle.
On principle. In reality, we are all ignorant to 95% of the details of this story and of the way the UFC handles their ancillary rights agreements.
The truth almost certainly falls somewhere in the middle of what Fitch & co. and what Dana would have you believe. I think it would behoove everyone to remember that before flying so haphazardly to one side of the argument or the other.
Much respect to Fitch
For taking a stand here. F Dana and his BS tactics. Good for Fitch. Nobody likes to be treated like dogshit.
It must really
suck to make $169,000 for one fight not including endorsements. I cannot see why Fitch did not walk away a long time ago from the UFC because he was treated so shitty.
Do you have any clue what you are talking about?
because Fitch’s beef isn’t over his contract. It’s over not having any control over his image for LIFE and not gaining anything for it either. What does he have to gain? NOTHING. It’s stuff like this that prevents guys like Fedor from signing with the UFC. Dana has way too much involvement and obviously maligns many with his tecniques.
I assume the point is he isn’t going to make that kind of money outside of the UFC, so it was a probably a poor decision to throw that away over a much smaller financial issue.
by Richard Wade on Nov 20, 2008 4:35 PM EST up reply actions
much smaller financial issue? It doesn't get much bigger than licensing agreements.
Do you not understand what a killer that is to not be able to benefit off of your own image AT ALL over your LIFETIME? I mean, it’s no shock that Fedor is not able to come to terms with UFC,
If he ends up making more money as a result of taking this idiotic stand and getting cut from the UFC, I’ll stand corrected.

Cry me a river, Fitch made 170k in his last fight which was the main event of a huge UFC ppv in which he fought for the WW title. How in the world am I or any supposed to feel bad for him, because he was stupid enough to listen to bad management and cost himself thousands of dollars in the process. This guys isn’t some little guy fighting for the good of all manking and he needs to realise that in the long run he is nothing without the Zuffa brand.
You’re right. He is nothing without the Zuffa brand. The UFC is usually right in these types of situations. This is not one of those. The UFC called up fighters, all but demanding they sign an agreement giving up their likeness in video games exclusively for life. Exclusive. For Life. You don’t know what’s going to happen down the road in this company, in the sport, in a fighters career. Fitch tries to negotiate for a five or ten year time limit and is told to either sign it or get cut. You tell me that’s fair? You tell me that guy refusing to sign based on the fact that he had a shell of dignity and didn’t want to be forced into something he didn’t think was right wasn’t an act we can all be jealous of?
According the President of American Top Team, that’s not how it unfolded.
