Steve Cofield's War Pitting Urijah Faber Against Anderson Silva

Ept_sports_mma_experts-799916967-1225615350_medium

I'd like to preface this piece by pointing on that I like Steve Cofield.  I live out in Vegas and listen to his radio show, and find it to be refreshing compared to the usual drabble of mid-afternoon sports talk hosts.  For the most part, I tend to agree with his opinions or at least can understand where he's coming from.

Unfortunately, Cofield has been one of the leading critics of Anderson Silva's performance at UFC 90.  To Cofield, Silva made a mockery of the sport and feels his routine would have been more appropriate on "Dancing With The Stars."  Steve and I can agree to disagree on our interpretation of what transpired a week ago, but then I saw this post from his Yahoo blog:

THE LEGION OF FIGHTERS CRITICIZING SILVA GROWS

Add Urijah Faber to list of fighters who say that Anderson Silva wasn't off his game at UFC 90. As Faber readies for his fight this week against Mike Brown in Ft. Lauderdale he sat down with Ariel Helwani of MMARated:

"I just think he was just confident knowing he was going to win. He probably could have done a little less clowning around but he is there to entertain and get people talking about him and everybody is talking about him so more power to him."

Faber said it was evident that Silva could've finished Cote whenever he wanted. The 'California Kid' also mentioned that pay-per-view is coming in 2009 for the WEC.

When I saw the headline, I expected Faber's quote to be a bit more inflammatory than it was.  Still, I could see how it could be seen as being critical of Anderson, so I checked out the interview for myself to provide some context and clarity.

Here's the full quote from Faber regarding UFC 90:

"I feel like, first off, Anderson Silva was on a different level than Cote talent-wise.  I don't think he felt threatened the least bit by him.  i think he was basically trying to pick his punches and end the fight in dramatic fashion. Cote's a tough guy, so it probably didn't pan out as planned, but when he landed his attacks they were devastating.  He barely missed the chin of Cote with a kick, split his forehead open, and he landed a switch knee that landed right on the chin. When he did strike, he put him in danger.  What he was basically doing was avoiding any kind of punishment while trying to take the guy out.

"Could he probably have finished it earlier?  Yes, but I don't think he was worried about having to do that.  I think he was confident knowing he would win.  He could maybe have done a little less clowning around, but he's there to entertain and get people talking about him, and everybody is talking about him now.  So, more power to him."

Maybe it's just me, but that quote combined with the tone and inflection in Faber's voice sounded more explanatory than anything else.  He talks about Anderson's clear skill advantage, the power shots he landed during the fight, and how it's important for a fighter to be entertaining.  I don't know how exactly Steve is interpreting the quote, but I think it's a bit disingenious to paint a picture of "legions" of fighters coming out against Anderson Silva and using this interview as an example.

I agree with everything Cofield has said about Anderson’s performance last weekend except that Anderson made a mockery of the sport. Steve just felt Anderson’s performance was in poor taste and trying to send a message to the UFC in that fashion when your in a new territory (Chicago) and supposeably P4P best fighter in the world was disrespectful to Cote, the UFC and the fans.

I definitely love how Cofield is passionate about the sport and doesn’t hold back his feelings.

Agree that cofield took some liberties with the title given faber’s actual comments. I’m still amazed not just by the level of criticism about Anderson but, in cofield’s case, the level of venom. Kudos to bloodyelbow for providing reasonable, thoughtful counters to all of the hatred out there that’s primarily meant to drum up controversy, not necessarily make a valid point.

personally, i hate when a mma website only post s part of a an interview or a statement, to try and sensationalize the subject and in general, try and garner more responses. ive seen it so many times over the last couple of years nothing surprises me.

I rewatched the Silva vs Cote fight again today

And I swear everyone has gone crazy. The night of the fight I was as blood thirsty as anyone due to the hype of the event and I’ll be honest I was a little disappointed as well. However, when I watched it again without the hype machine behind Silva I decided it was a great fight. Silva engaged several times successfully with tons of combinations and moves I have never seen before. He was fighting a Machida style fight but when they struck it was fireworks.
I also realized that up until the last minute or two it felt like a great fight. It wasn’t until Anderson started moving his hands around like he was at a rave at the end of the second that it seemed like he was doing anything other than being cautious. But when you see Machida fight he does almost the same thing all the time but a little less crazy looking.
Silva was trying to put on a show for everyone while showing his opponent the respect his powerful hands deserve. As response everyone turns on him because of a freak injury stopping Cote from becoming an inevitable highlight reel. Its really absurd and if I were Silva I would not be as polite about the situation as he has been.

EAZY-E

i agree completley and have felt that way since the 1rst time i saw it. neither fighter had anything to be ashamed of. silva was fighting a very smart, very technical fight ,and cote’s chin was every bit as good as advertised. i think it was the 1rst time in a while that silva was in a real fight, where he couldnt just run right through his opponent and made very nice adjustments. had cote not been injured, i think he would have lasted the full 5, but it would have been a lopsided decision(save the serra/gsp punch out of nowhere). even then the expectations for silva are so high, that if he would have won an all 5rnd across the board decision, he still would have faced critisizm, alot like machida gets. Cote is not getting enough credit for his performance either. he has nowhere the skill-set that silva has but a ton of heart, an iron chin and one hell of a punch.i honestly believe that if silva does retire after his contract is up and cote can come back 100%, cote has a good a chance of becoming the mw champ as does franklin, hendo, marquardt, okami, bisping or maia. anytime cote is in a 5rnd fight, with his iron jaw and ko power along with his improved skills (almeida couldnt come closse to bringing him down) he;s a tpou match-up for any mw. once again let me say thats IF silva retires or moves up to lhw and gives up his mw belt.
