Clip of the Day: High School Mixed Martial Arts
For those who heard about the high school playing host to a MMA club, the New York Times goes one step deeper and visits the school itself. A very short but interesting little of a nuggest of a piece.

I’m all for this.
I know one side effect that training has had on me, is, that it has evened me out some.
What does that mean? Well some people would think that being involved in mma would make somebody want to go out and fight all the time. I find the effect it has on me, is increased discipline, more patience with people and the ability to AVOID getting into fights. I wish that I would have had that at a younger age, it definitely would have saved me some grief. It is awesome to be carrying around stress or anger and go in and get your butt handed to you on the mat!

I found the exact same thing with wrestling.
I really don’t sweat anyone walking around. I know with absolute certainty that the percentage of people walking around who could actually hurt me in a scrap is really low, so I don’t worry at all.
The other thing is the camaraderie you form with your workout partners. Everyone feels the same way about fighting, it’s like “Why?”
I am grateful beyond words for my wrestling experience. I learned so much about myself and the world from those three hour workouts.

Twice weekly I go to lunchtime jiu jitsu classes, and for the last three weeks, during that time, a big high school contingent has come down to our school for their phys.ed. class. I think that’s awesome, though I remain incredibly jealous that when I was in high school, all we got to do was run around the track. In the rain. Repeatedly.

The club that I am a part of goes to a high school once a month and we teach them jiu jitsu. It’s too much fun.

I was impressed with the lack of negative bias of the story. Nice to see that.

Absolutely. Really even-handed take on it.

it will be interesting to see
in 15 years, the guys that grew up on MMA
not wrestling, not jiu jitsu, not boxing. MMA.
i dont think theyll do as well actually… I think the best fighters will still have made their base in other sports.
as a kid who wrestled in high school, im sure their coach is goin bananas, i dont think theres any doubt theyll lessen the enrollment in the wrestling team over the years.
