Dana White Warns Ontario - You're Next!

Fronted by Luke Thomas.

White_dana_getty_400_medium

Canoe.ca has an article up in which Dana White discusses his plans to get the UFC into Ontario:

"There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be in Toronto," White continued. "We’ve got a (clean) nine-year record of health and safety. There is absolutely no reason for Canada to not accept this sport. There’s an education factor; we need to educate people.

"I’m going after Canada after (I get approval in) New York and Massachusetts. I’m attacking Canada. I’m going to spend so much time in Canada I’ll have to buy a house. I’m going to live here until it’s done. I’m going to be sitting on the porch every day they come to work."

"Everybody I bumped into was from Canada," he said, adding that having St-Pierre fight in Toronto is a no-brainer. "This fight (between St-Pierre and Penn) should have been in Toronto or Hawaii.

"Canada is a huge market for us. Toronto is the mecca, this is the place to be as far as MMA is concerned."

Claps hands, dances around happily. We love it when Americans pay attention to us.

MMA? More like MM-eh

by Discman2 on Nov 18, 2008 5:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, because international expansion (and capitalizing on GSP’s popularity) means nothing.

Is that a USFL logo in your pic thingy? ABA? XFL?

by subo on Nov 18, 2008 6:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can only assume you were referring to me

a. I wasnt mocking MMA expansion. I was stereotyping the way canadians talk.
b. You can click on the ‘pic thingy’ to see it’s a PrideFC logo.

Funny. He didn’t get your joke and you apparently didn’t get his either.

Not surprising. Canada is completely nuts for MMA. I went to a show in Nanaimo a while back – total grassroots, very small, no frills, lots of guys on their first fight – and the place was PACKED. Like, sweat running down the walls kind of packed. And LOUD. And knowledgable.

And that’s Nanaimo. Imagine packing the ACC for a GSP title fight. It would be madness.

MMA in Nanaimo

was it a real MMA event or the Do You Think You’re Tough event?

by TheLevi on Nov 18, 2008 10:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It was a real one. Two of the guys I train with had their debut fights that night. And our coach would never book one of his guys in at a half-ass show.

Wait…why wasn’t GSP vs. Penn held in Hawaii or Quebec?

by Dabashire on Nov 18, 2008 6:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hawaii isn’t fully regulated at the moment, I believe. As for Quebec, it’s impossible to get the Bell Centre during hockey season on a Saturday night. That nearly scuttled the last UFC in Montreal, and no other venue is likely to be suitable.

if anyone knows better than me, please correct me.

by AJB on Nov 18, 2008 6:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The Canadiens are pretty busy in the Bell Centre all winter. The ACC in Toronto is busy in the winter with the Maple Leafs and the Raptors. If they were really ambitious and wanted to shatter a live gate record, they could try the Montreal Olympic Stadium. I think they could fill it, just with people coming from outside Montreal and Quebec.

Maple Leafs Gardens

The leafs moved to ACC, what about there old vacant Maple Leaf Gardens?

I'm from Canada, and they think I'm slow eh!

I love MLG – it’s a historic building, that’s actually quite beautiful, and it was great for hockey – but it’s a fucking HISTORICAL ARTIFACT. There’s no way the UFC would do a live show there. ANd last I checked, Loblaw’s owns MLG now and part of their purchase agreement from MLSE includes that they will not use it as a competing arena venue to the ACC.

by AJB on Nov 18, 2008 7:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think they ripped up and sold the seats there as souveniers. Not 100% sure though. Maple Leaf Gardens isn’t the biggest venue either. An open air event in the summer at the Rogers Centre (Skydome) would be insane too. The capacity of the Rogers Centre is 50516 when set up for the Buffalo Bills game. I think the UFC could fill the Rogers Centre, lower the ticket prices, and still break a gate record.

by Ubernoober on Nov 18, 2008 7:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, they wanted to pull the seats out and then found out that because of the weird way the Gardens is built, they help hold up the walls. How bout that.

by AJB on Nov 19, 2008 6:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Its the Maple Leafs. Nothing suprises me anymore thanks to them. They have made me immune to ridiculous shite.

by Ubernoober on Nov 19, 2008 6:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, MLG is finished. Aside from the ACC which gets regular use by the Leafs and Raptors, we’ve got SkyDome, where the Blue Jays play, and that’s about it. It’d be awesome if they had a UFC event here… but I’m not holding my breath.

Incidentally, with respect to the comment about Canadians loving MMA, I was watching Hockey Night in Canada on CBC, and Bob Cole (the play-by-play guy) actually made reference to George St. Pierre! I couldn’t believe it.

I think he said in a press conference this week that Hawaii wasn’t worth it because now that it’s regulate the taxes are rediculous, which is a shame.

LOL I still call it the skydome………but technically it’s the Roger’s Centre

Excellent!

I have friends living in Vegas from Toronto that go to every UFC event! I drove to Chicago and to Montreal to see the events!

Toronto and the surrounding area has so much talent and fans!

Dana your comments truly make me smile!

Cheers………..eh! :P

Bah, screw Ontario, take it to Alberta which already is sanctioned and regularly holds shows already. MFC, RawCombat, Cage Rage, etc.

(Okay, I’m showing my bias, I’m just happy with more places being able to show MMA)

UFC in Canada

even thogh it is across the country from me , this is good news.I hope he decides to push for the legalization of MMA in B.C as well. it wouldn’t take long to sell out GM Place.

Okay, I think I’ve done this reply thing wrong.

haha this is spectacular.

i’ve always said UFC at the air canada centre would be crazy.. just wait until it gets done and we get GSP in there. It will make montreal look tame!

Good luck Dana. Why don’t they push for UFC in Seattle in the meantime for all the Vancouverites to drive down to? BTW, I live in Seattle and might benefit from this.

I would fly out to Canada to a UFC event rather than Hawaii due to proximity (I live in the Chicago area) – but I’d love to go to a UFC event in Hawaii – the people out there are the friendliest I’ve met.
