Quote of the Day: Tommy Speer

"I'm finally noticing I can't farm, I can't fight; I can't do both of them at the same time. Both require alot of dedicated hours.

As of right now, my decision for fighting came to an end here."

-- Tommy Speer talks about his decision loss to Beau Baker at Cagefest Extreme 6. (Video on the right)

Seems like a nice guy, but his skills just weren’t there. He relied too much on just being strong, and that can only take one so far. When Anthony Johnson KOed him brutally, I figured it was a matter of time.

Also, Beau Baker is extremely undrerrated.

EXACTLY

what I was coming on here to post.

Regardless…Speer wasn’t ever going to evolve his game that I could tell. He was just going to be exactly what he always was.

Best wishes for his future though.

I just wonder if he would have evolved with a different style of coach on TUF.

agreed..

there was a bit of “you’re just like me!” from Matt Hughes which led to not allowing him to fully develop…

I wouldn’t be surprised if Tommy idolized Hughes because of their similar backgrounds – strong farmboy wrestlers – and training under him cemented that mindset.

Yeah, he seemed to get pigeon-holed right off the bat. Considering his strength and heart, a different camp could have probably influenced him in another direction, but maybe he just figured fighting wasn’t for him considering the amount of commitment it would take.

His movement and stance wasn’t made for MT, for sure. It would have been a lot of hard work for him there, I think.
