Freddie Roach training Anderson Silva

UFC middleweight champion and arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet Anderson Silva began training today with world-class trainer Freddie Roach.

"He came in a couple of days ago and i introduced him to Manny (Pacquiao) and the other trainers. We picked out a time and tonight he's gonna come in at 6:00 and start training with me." stated Roach

"I hear he's a great striker and i hope we can help him improve even more," he continued.

There are lots of MMA fighters that are very technical with their Jiu-jitsu and Kickboxing, but there are only a few fighters are out there that are good technical boxers. It is nice to hear that big name fighters such as Andrei Arlovski and Anderson Silva are taking time to learn more and refine their boxing from world class trainers.

We all know how good a kickboxer Anderson is but fine tuning his boxing would surely add more to his arsenal. And who knows, if Anderson still decides to pursue the fight with Roy Jones after he retires from MMA, the experience would surely help him a lot.

Hear that? That’s the sound of everyone in MW bulking up to LHW and cutting down to WW.

Excellent

I’m always preaching about the benefits of sound technical striking. Silva is always working to get better…

yup. if people follow suit, we’d get better fighters and less sloppy boxing in mma fights. Probably more body punches too.

I think Mr. Anderson is pissed people gave him shit about his Cote fight.

I feel sorry for whoever he faces next…

I don’t think it can be stated enough, how much of a difference boxing can make. As a BJJ guy, I train with a couple of dudes that have done some entry level boxing training. It is amazing how much more skilled they are at striking even with that little bit extra. Now imagine a world class coach like Roach teaching an a outstanding student like Silva…freakin’ scary.

On a side note, i wonder how much longer Roach’s health will allow him to train. Dude was the definition of a guy that stood in there and took beatings. He made Gatti and Ward look like Mayweather, lol.

It’s refreshing to see a BJJ-first guy giving some credit to my first art. You don’t hear a lot of that around here.

Freddies has Parkinsons

but he controls it by staying in fantastic shape. His outlook is he’s not going to let the disease control him so long as its in his power to control it. Guy is the fuckin man

Thanks for expanding on it. When I found this out, it definitely made me a fan of his. Hope he can stay training as long as he wants!

Does this increase the chances that he “retires” from the UFC and fights Roy Jones Jr.?

by Rundownloser on Nov 20, 2008 6:17 PM EST reply actions

That’s the speculation, but his manager has also come forward and backtracked a bit on the retiring at 35 bit. He’s now saying that Silva wants the opportunity to retire at 35, not that he will act on it.

i think he still retires. I saw an interview with him saying that after he retires he still wants to get roy jones, it was just pushed back cause of his contract.. Thats a dream for him since it’s one of his all time favorite fighters.
Maybe after the fight, he doesnt have that any ‘what-ifs’ anymore and he goes back to the UFC?
