Franklin calls Machida Boring
From MMA Junkie, Rich Franklin was the Q & A guest before the UFC 91 weigh-ins. (I feel kind of slighted, we got Amir Sadollah @ UFC 87, but he was good, so it's ok...)
Here's some of what he said....
"I'd fight him," Franklin said. "The thing about a Machida fight that isn't appealing to me is that stylistically, Machida is kind of a boring fighter.
"That's not a putdown. It's not a putdown. He's very, very effective. He's good at what he does. He's constantly backing away and forces his opponent into mistakes, and that's how he catches you."
More of the Q & A session here...Rich Franklin talks Machida, TUF, and more.

I think you overstated in your title...
He said nothing new…Machida is a boring fighter…stylistically. I love to watch him work, but he poses problems for people with his methodical evading style (and sometimes makes for boring jab offs).
And they call him boring…
I don’t find him to be boring in the least, but, to each there own I suppose.
Because it’s all Lyoto’s fault no one has an answer for his tactics…Tito was so aggressive in the fight, and all Lyoto did was run…please, Tito was pathetic up until the triangle attempt, is that Lyoto’s problem?
The correct answer, for all you haters, is no.

I too am a Lyoto fan. I don’t get all the hate – this isn’t Bob’s Backyard MMA Challenge.

I can see..
why some people think he’s boring. I disagree, I enjoyed his fight against Tito but I think if everyone fought like that, I would be pretty bored too. But for one guy to do it, or some people once in a while, it’s a nice change of pace and enjoyable to watch – like watching someone figure out a math problem with violence.
Just for the record, I don’t think Lyoto’s boring. Like Zack said^^, I just don’t think he takes advantage of some of the finishing situations he gets himself into.
On a side note, I met Lyoto @ a Minneapolis club the night before UFC 87, and he was a real cool guy, very approachable. The only bad thing was that the security at the club didn’t really know him, so he didn’t get treated as well as he should have by them.
I can’t wait to see him and Thiago Silva, that will be an explosive fight, let’s see people call him boring after that…
Wygrac Polska... Or something like that...
8 decisions in 13 fights (and one was due to a cut)
he constantly backs p and fights for the decision, not to finish someone. He just tries to outpoint them.
Look at how everyone LOVED this last UFC… why? becase there was one freaking decision (and it was even fight of the night). Unless it is a war, decisions aren’t usually exciting
the thing is, the gifs shown of machida, ARE THE ONLY EXCITING PARTS OF THE FIGHTS. everything else is just him going backwards and pitter pattering.
i dont know about you but i enjoy watching someone fight as technical as he is. I get why you find him boring but to me he isnt. Its nice to see his opponents get frustrated cause he never gets touched and they get hit every time they try.

I might be one of the few people who actually likes watching Machida fight, since I find his technical mastery so entertaining. That said, he’s not a big action fighter, and I can see why people might find him boring. I don’t think Rich said anything disrespectful, he just stated a generally agreed upon fact.
I like Machida, but seeing him backpedal to decisions is dissapointing. It is fun to watch his tecnical expertise, but you’re not on the edge of your seat watching for a suprise KO or submission that could happen suddenly in a normal MMA match.
Compare him to someone like Anderson Silva or Demian Mia. They are really advanced technically, but they are fun to watch cause they engage and win decisively.
i like machida too..
he KOed franklin & the fuck he said it was boring! yeah it was, especially when you’re being KOed! fuck you franklin! hope hendo kill you!
He's only boring if you're a fan of his opponent
Machida is very very good. Thanks Nick Thomas for that gif post, great stuff.
I’ve sometime watched Machida and thought he was boring….like in the way Chris Leben is never boring…I guess Machida just doesnt knock people out cold. But he is legit and Franklin probably has no place to talk.
I think Franklin was trying to say that Machida doesnt take the same risks that he himself might….hence his multiple losses and rhinoplasty procedures. Franklin was basically trying to say that he thinks of himself an exciting fighter without actually coming out and sounding egotistical. We all put down others to make ourselves seem better.
I think he is boring as well. He has a few finished fights but overall, he does not “fight” he goes in with the desire to not lose. Yes Tito was the aggressor in their fight and the few times Lyoto did something it was cool but WOW you really had to want to sit there and wait for something to happen.
If I wanted to watch what Machida calls fighting I would watch World Combat League.

he does not "fight" he goes in with the desire to not lose
I see your point, but I might rephrase it as, “he goes in with the desire not to get badly hurt, while trying to badly hurt his opponent.” I don’t see a problem with that strategy, personally, but as I wrote above – too much could definitely get out of control.
Thank you Myth, the rephrase does help.

I don’t think it was too boring seeing you get your ass KO’d Franklin. Machida is the next LH champ for sure. Thiago is going down!
Machida is the next lightweight champion? I’m down for that (winking emoticon)

Franklin is just saying, for an opponent to beat Machida they would need to use a strategy that would lead to a less than exciting fight to most people.
One thing I have noticed with Machida is he uses so many feints, I enjoy watching and seeing how his opponent reacts to them.
I have also gotten the feeling that Machida and his camp are trying to make him a more exciting fighter. Them waiting for Thiago Silva rather than taking another fight to me says they feel that Silva’s aggression will lead right into Machida’s plans and give him and the fans a decisive finish. Has Machida ever had a medical suspension?
I'm one of the people who totally appreciates Machida's outside striking
mastery, and also hates watching his fights, because there’s no sense of anticipation. I’ve made this comparison many times, so I’ll be brief this time. When Chuck was doing his thing for three years or whatever, and nobody could beat him, was it fun to watch because we knew how the fight would go, or because we knew it would end with Chuck revving the chainsaw center-ring while his opponent was being tended to by the medical staff?
I’m not a Chuck fan, but I enjoyed his fights because they would be ended in (usually) spectacular fashion. But we knew that the fight was going to consist of the following steps:
1) Chuck cocks his right hand
2) Chuck backpedals
2a) Chuck sprawls
3) Chuck delivers right hand
4) Chuck revs the chainsaw
Steps 1-3 are repeated a random number of times until step 4 is achieved. That’s ALL WE GOT TO SEE, but it was ok because we knew it would be spectacular.
There’s nothing spectacular about Machida. His range-finding and accuracy are amazing, and it’s like watching a martial arts striking clinic every time he gets out there. But there is pretty much zero chance he’s going to KO someone. If he can pull a Rashad and get a couple of amazing highlight reel KO’s on his resume, including one of a top-ranked opponent, then my opinion of him will go from “Boring, but very good fighter” to “Extremely entertaining potential champion.”
But that’s just me.
