I am surprised.

I am really surprised that Gabriel Gonzaga was being paid more than co-main event fighter Kenny Florian. The KenFlo fight was one of the reasons I decided to buy the ppv which I had resolved not to purchase.

He signed his contract after the Crocop fight I do believe… when everyone thought he was the next big thing at HW

then he proceeded to get pwned by Couture, Werdum, and then got fed cans.

Florian, on the other hand, hasn’t had such a high profile win (like crocop was). If he were to sub/KO Penn (high unlikely) then I bet he would get paid a shit ton too.

by dbcb on Nov 17, 2008 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

He’s probably in line for a nice contract anyway.

Stephens’ KO bonus was well deserved. That uppercut was insane. I can’t remember which website it was, but someone likened it to a “Shoryuken” from Streetfighter. I jumped out of my seat when that happened.

Yes sir,

that one drew a “holy shit” from me as I jumped up from my couch!

Now I know why Gonzaga goes so fucking nuts when he wins – he just make an extra 55k.

by Derek Suboticki on Nov 17, 2008 5:49 PM EST reply actions

Randy’s pay has gone up with his new contract (he made $250k for his wins against Gonzaga and Sylvia), wonder what his PPV cut is now?

I bet Kenny Florian’s next contract will be well beyond anything Gonzaga makes particularly if he can look as good against Penn as he looked against Stevenson.

He probably

has a cut of the PPV draw on top of his fight pay

Love to see Dustin “Don’t call me McLovin” Hazelett getting a nice $88,000 paycheck, the kid is really fun to watch and deserves the money. I’ve been a big fan ever since he wore the “No I am not Jon Fitch so stop asking” t-shirt to the ring against Koscheck.

He has to have dirt on somebody…

You didn’t enjoy the fight with Riley? Maybe it was a TV thing but in the arena, watching those two throw non-stop for three rounds was a lot of fun.

I’ve seen a lot of negative comments about Gurgel for putting himself out there, at risk, and ignoring his advantages but then people have negative things to say about Machida for basically doing the opposite. I’m not saying you had anything bad to say about Lyoto but I just find it funny that both guys get lambasted for the way they fight.

by Day Man on Nov 17, 2008 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

Gurgel ignores the whole aspect of his game that would make him a decent fighter by standing up and trying to swing for the fences. I feel frustrated and embarrassed watching him fight, seeing his clumsy boxing get picked apart by mediocre fighters.

I’m sure this has been covered ad nauseum already.

by Benicio on Nov 17, 2008 11:48 PM EST up reply actions

I was highly entertained by the fight…but Gurgel is so frustrating, especially after watching Hazelett, his student.

by iiowyn on Nov 17, 2008 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

Agree completely,

even when he took Riley down he did so with no time left in the 2nd. It is pretty ridiculous that he did not even try any subs. I can understand trying to stand & bang but when that clearly is not working you would think he would revert back to his BJJ

by dnevil001 on Nov 18, 2008 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

Haha, after watching him take that head kick and barely flinch, if only he would use his damn jiu jitsu, he could become the little Nogueira. One thing I took from that fight is Gurgel can take a hit.

And yes I know there is already a Pequeno Nogueira =P

by iiowyn on Nov 18, 2008 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

This is a case where the student would demolish the master. Gurgel is a great teacher, but I doubt he has the talent to beat Hazelett.

a lightweight bout between Aaron Riley and Jorge Gurgel netted each competitor a Fight of the Night bonus.

HAHA OWNED!

and this is like his 2nd or 3rd FOTN

so that, plus the fact he is a well known instructor…

I think he is doing just fine

by dbcb on Nov 17, 2008 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

plus these guys get so much more cash we dont know about…so tired of hearing people complain about money

by banter on Nov 17, 2008 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

But he did get fotn and we only know what was reported…so tired of this topic when it has been proven countless times thats only part of the salary.

by banter on Nov 17, 2008 10:58 PM EST up reply actions

why do people still believe these numbers.

Everyone readily accepts the fact that Fedor got more than 300k for Sylvia, and that Trigg got more than $1 for his last fight, but everyone acts like the numbers on the Zuffa cards are the only amount of cash that Zuffa pays these fighters.

by Phildo on Nov 17, 2008 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

people feel the need to hate Zuffa, so they have to find something to hate

Because it’s no one’s business how much a fighter makes?
Because if no one knows how much the fighters make it’s harder for the agents to negotiate with the UFC.
Because all the money in the reported salaries needs to be given to the Athletic Commission before the event to ensure that the money is there and the fighters won’t get screwed (if the UFC isn’t going to screw them, why hand that money over beforehand)

by Phildo on Nov 17, 2008 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

why should they? I guarantee most fighters don’t want it out there.

by banter on Nov 18, 2008 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

another source

Here’s another source showing a fighter getting more than these numbers say, I think it’s about time to end the whining about them not getting paid enough because we really have no information.

For the first time you won at UFC and didn’t get the submission of the night bonus…

Yes, but Dana White also gave me an extra bonus for that (laughs)…

I guess the moral of the story is to stay a company man and the company will take care of you. I wonder if Werdum would had been cut had he kept his mouth shut?

by cyph on Nov 18, 2008 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

So true,

that is pretty much how the world works and fighters who do not realize that need to learn that lesson.
