Quote of the Day: BJ Penn the Technician

Bj_penn_wins_ufc_title__2_medium

"This is the biggest fight of my career...I feel like I’m better than him. He’s athletic, but I believe his athleticism overshadows issues with his technique, and I have better technical skills than him."

-- BJ Penn, UFC lightweight champion, talking about what he sees are the shortcomings in UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre's game.

For the record: I believe this rematch is one of the most high-profile fights of our generation. I firmly believe we will be talking about this fight (and the dynamic between Penn and St. Pierre) for decades. I plan on making the case for this belief over the next few months.

Not only highest profile— but perhaps the greatest matchup of technical and physical abilities we have ever seen.

Oh yes. It’s the definition of fantasy match-up.

Give me time. I’m going to go over all of the details, significances and nuances of this fight. It’s one of the most important we will ever watch.

Good stuff. Looking forward to the analysis. I gotta say, watching Dana White’s last blog with Penn and St. Pierre sitting next to each other, I got goosebumps. This will definitely be a fight for the ages.

Damn it Luke, so you’re saying I gotta round up the troops and head back to Vegas for this fight?

Just think…a decade from now…most of the fights will be like this…both fighters VERY well rounded with the athletic skills to match.

If george twists the nipples and gets the riddum going, it could be bad for B.J. Baby Jay needs to find something to counteract that.

The nipple twist does not work against Hawaiian fighters.

He needs to countertwist GSP’s nipples during the ref talk in the octagon.

by iiowyn on Nov 17, 2008 2:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That could be the funniest thing ever. I very much dislike Penn, but if the ref says “touch gloves” and he reaches out and tweaks GSPs nipples, I just may get a tattoo of him.

Nipple reversal

60% of the time, it works every time…

I was thinking something along those lines. Maybe a ball tug or something

I like you BJ

But you’re gonna get smashed. End of…

UFC: 94

Penn VS GSP II and Silva VS Machida? UFC is just turning out sick cards after sick cards!

It's the Golden Age

I’ve been saying it, with the precursor that it can only get better. Scary…

I’m so down with this fight. You have to hand it to the UFC, they’re giving us the good fights despite politics and whether or not they should or shouldn’t happen. I sort of like that.

I’m seriously considering getting tickets for this one. Machida and Silva is going to be really intriguing. I’ve only seen Lyoto in trouble against Tito when he was in the triangle, and Silva is just plain nasty.

Seriously

that triangle made up for the rest of the 13-14 mins of that fight

I enjoyed watching Machida work, and was wishing he had 5-10 more seconds in the first round. Nice triangle though from Ortiz.

Silva got rocked one time so far that I’ve seen and that was when he fought Mendes. That was a good fight.

I am just glad this fight is not going to be in the UK.

That reminds me… they need to put on another Mendes fight. That guy could be very good.

Two iconic figures at the very peak of their sport, without question to the contrary. It’s not just that they’re so far beyond superlatives as fighters themselves, but also that it happens at this very exact point in the sport’s life. Their clash converging with the dawn of the new age for MMA. It’s just fucking epic.

by ununkvadrium on Nov 17, 2008 5:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It’s two guys who are easily among the top five fighters in terms of fighting ability. It might not have the crossover appeal of Lesnar-Couture, but it should be an incredible fight.

Bad time to be fighting BJ Penn

Someone needs to put up a gif of BJ smashing Lyoto in the face from their last fight.

Were those related comments?

by Blackout612 on Nov 18, 2008 12:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

See the gif of Lyoto up there?

After BJ beats GSP, he should be able to fight Silva next. He has already shown he can fight fighters above his weight class (see the Machida fight, many saw that decision going Penn’s way) and win (see Matt Hughes), now that he is taking training seriously, the sky’s the limit.

I meant the title, indicating present tense and the body, indicating past events (in which he lost, no less).

PS

That gif is of Machida and Tito.

by Blackout612 on Nov 18, 2008 2:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good grief, are you the hall monitor?

The title refers to what BJ famously said right before the Stevenson fight, he acknowledged Joe’s ability but dismissed his chances when he said “Bad time to be fighting BJ Penn”.

Yes, that gif is Tito and Lyoto, it was put up as the only time that person had seen Lyoto in trouble against him. BJ put Machida in trouble, my suggestion was a related gif. You obviously haven’t seen the BJ/Machida fight, BJ was fighting way up at LHW (205) and it was close enough that many think that BJ should have gotten the decision. http://www.cagepotato.com/2008/01/22/fight-of-the-day-bj-penn-vs-lyoto-machida/

Any other lame questions?

by dualdiagnosis on Nov 18, 2008 3:51 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think FightMetric had it going to BJ Penn or a draw, I don’t recall.

There are also stats up for his fights with Jens Pulver and Caol Uno II.
