History of Randy Couture Betting Lines

Fronted by Kid Nate.

After seeing the betting lines for Couture vs. Lesnar get further and further apart over the past few days, I thought I'd check and see how Couture had fared in the past with betting agencies.

Fortunately for the lazy man controlling my brain some one had done the hard yards for me.

Betwwx.com has compiled a list of betting odds for Couture since he fought Josh Barnett in 2002. The list is as follows:

Gabriel Gonzaga -140 vs. Randy Couture +110
Tim Sylvia -235 vs. Randy Couture +205
Chuck Liddell -135 vs. Randy Couture +115
Mike Van Arsdale +300 vs. Randy Couture -370
Chuck Liddell +205 vs. Randy Couture -255
Vitor Belfort +160 vs. Randy Couture -185
Vitor Belfort +200 vs. Randy Couture -240
Tito Ortiz -200 vs. Randy Couture +170
Chuck Liddell -225 vs. Randy Couture +185
Ricco Rodriquez +100 vs. Randy Couture -140
Josh Barnett +135 vs. Randy Couture -165

To save everyone some time counting that is a 4-1 record for Couture as an underdog since 2002. As a favourite, Couture has compiled a 2-4 record with an overall UFC record since 2002 as 6-5.

The latest odds I've seen for Couture and Lesnar in the past few hours is (also from betwwx.com):

Randy Couture +100 vs. Brock Lesnar -115

I love betting mma but.....

This one is too close to call it seems, the undercard may provide more value.

this is suppose to be the latest BETTING line. I’m sure the ODDS are much more lop sided. the fact that the betting line is so tight leads me to believe that there are a lot of gamblers who just can’t accept the fact that a professional wrestler is about to destroy a seasoned, and well respected professional fighter. once again let me say, only because i love The Natural, the heavy weight division is ridiculous because of the weight limits.

Dude, the fight opened at +130 Lesnar. Gamblers have pushed the line a ton already.

And Randy’s odds have blown out to +120 at bookmaker/betcris

OH SHIT!

I had no idea it started out that way. Lesnar as the underdog — what were they thinking. Still surprisingly close though. I have a feeling that between savvy fight fans, and pro-wrestling fans from Minnesota, the odds are gonna spread even more.

And the first Belfort – Couture fight ended on an early eye cut in the first round out of nowhere. I’m taking a leap of logic here, but given what we learned about Randy and how he fights Belfort, one can make the case that Couture is more like 3-3 since 2002 when he’s the favorite. It’s a leap yes, but not far fetched.

Yeah I agree totally, but its still a fact that helps to push the argument so we shan’t let that silly little thing called logic stand in the way of a good argument.

I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time, and this seems like the best place to say it. People keep harping about Lesnar getting a shot at the UFC Heavyweight Title in only his 4th professional fight. Let’s look at Randy’s 4th professional fight according to both sherdog and wikipedia.

It was a different era, but at the UFC Japan: Ultimate Japan, Randy Couture defeated Maurice Smith to become the UFC Heavyweight champion in only his 4th professional fight.

Kinda ironic.

And

He got a title shot against Sylvia too without having to work his way up the ladder.

Cool Factoids
  1. In almost the same time frame between Couture’s last fight VS this fight, Brock has fought three times. Experience counts a lot in MMA, but so does muscle memory and ring rust.
  1. And to invalidate my previous commentt: It was about a one year layoff between retirement and comeback that Couture won his heavyweight belt.
  1. Randy Couture moved to light heavyweight because he thought that modern heavyweights were “too big” and “too strong”
  1. Randy retired because he felt that age had caught up with him. Almost three years later, why does he feel that he’s stronger than ever?

As a martial arts fan, I’d love to see Randy validate the notion that wisdom and experience beats youth and strength. However, when you bet, you take the emotions out of it. Forget the fact that Lesnar was a pro wrestler. Forget that Couture is your hero because he beat the odds and won against younger and bigger men.

Just remember that most of the UFC hall of famers and ex champions had one thing in common: a strong wrestling background (Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes, Dan Severn, Mark Coleman, Randy Couture, GSP, etc.)

Disclaimer: I don’t bet. I have never watched Brock Lesnar in the WWE. I do believe that Brock Lesnar winning will be the best thing for MMA’s growth for the next 5-10 years.

If Randy loses this one, I think a move to light heavy might be warranted..

unless he opts to retire. There some great matchups out there for Randy though.

Would love to see Randy fight a guy like Machida or Thiago Silva. Hell, Randy against Andersone Silva would be a megafight many would love to see as well.

I hope that after he retires he gets back into the commentary booth.

I REALLY miss Randy in the booth. I wish they could do something to eliminate Goldberg entirely and get Randy in there full time…

by AJB on Nov 14, 2008 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

I actually like Goldberg, he has grown on me.

ufc.com has an interesting piece on him.

by iiowyn on Nov 14, 2008 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

The piece was interesting. But he’s just not for me. He talks too much, gets too many things wrong, reaches for really silly analogies and generally comes across as trying to hard to be witty. Especially considering how screechy and excitable Rogan is, he needs to be offset by someone smooth and confident. I know he didn’t always fit the bill, but I loved Howard Cosell’s introduction to a football game in the snow:

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. I’m Howard Cosell, and frankly… I’m cold.”

No hyperbole, no shouts of “THIS IS THE COLDEST I HAVE EVER EVER BEEN! IT’S SO COLD IN HERE THAT YOU HAD TO SCRAPE PUPPIES OFF THE PAVEMENT JUST TO GET INTO THE STADIUM”, which is the sort of silly exaggeration I’ve come to expect from Goldberg. Maybe it’s just personal taste, though.

by AJB on Nov 14, 2008 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely personal taste. To me Goldie’s charm comes from his screwups.

by iiowyn on Nov 14, 2008 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

I would never bet this one, it’s a handicappers nightmare. But..I certainly wouldn’t bet against Couture if I was going to bet it..
