In addition to Werdum departing the organization, FiveOuncesOfPain.com learned earlier today that middleweight Jason Lambert is now also a free agent.

No matter what people believe, the UFC has a cap limit of fighters under contract, and that seems to be around 180. Look for the UFC to cut more fighters in the near future, specially if they start signing some more fighters like Shields or Lawler.

Lawler is a good fighter, but 0-3 in your last three fights is a totally fair criteria for getting dropped.

Agree completely,
the UFC ultimately is still a business like any other. If you are not a huge draw or you do not perform, you are not going to be around long.

So I guess we will see Houston Alexander and Brandon Vera dropped soon?
Um, I don’t think so.

There’s been talk – including from Dana White – that Alexander is at risk; I think everyone knows this by now. You won’t see him on a main card for his next fight, and if it’s a loss, I expect he’s toast. He earned some cred for his two big wins, but he’s almost used it up. And everyone knows that Vera is under pressure to perform – again, look at White’s comments after the last UFC – but isn’t likely to be cut while plans for expansion to the Phillipines are still in play. So let’s try not to oversimplify.

Vera is 1-2 in his last 3. A better example would be Burkman.

They should cut Burkman. He’s a boring fighter who can’t seem to win anymore in the UFC. It’s not like he’s drawing a dime, either.

After his last fight, some people were suggesting that Burkman head over to the WEC to give Condit another legit challenger.
Obviously this isn’t directly from the UFC, but despite Zuffa’s claims that the WEC is not UFC’s “minor leagues,” middle of the pack guys at Welterweight and Lightweight may be able to continue working for Zuffa in the WEC (e.g. Burkman at WW and Gamburyan at LW).

I suspect Manny Gamburyan will be gone if he loses his next fight. Dana never seemed enthralled with him from the start.
