Note to BloodyElbow.com Readers re: Deadspin
The message is loud and clear. There's no more need to send any of the editors any further emails, so I will ask you nicely to please refrain from doing so at this point.
Deadspin.com has indicated to me that the originial post stays up with updates serving as corrections. Typically, this is what newspapers do and it provides those media outlets with the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to transparency.
Thanks for everyone for the support, but let's leave this situation alone now.

… it’d be nice if Deadspin would actually “correct” anything with the updates.
The first “update” contains the original author’s version of his phone call with Irvin. That article includes this statement by Chandler:
But more importantly, on the chance that it could be true, my snarky attitude in the post was quite probably inappropriate.
Nice emphasis on the fact that it “could” be true now that you’ve talked to the man himself, and nice to admit that your snarky attitude was “inappropriate” — all without actually admitting that the incident did happen or that the “snarky” attitude was simply inappropriate because of the subject matter. And way to man up and admit that you should have actually bothered to do a little research before posting such a “snarky” piece in the first place — wait, you didn’t do that, did you Mr. Chandler?
Then, in today’s “update” you get some more great taking of responsibility. First, the title of the new update includes that the mma community and Irvin are “pestering” Mr. Chandler. Such a shame that the man is feeling “pestered” after his irresponsible actions and refusal to even take responsibility in the “update” thereto have actually had a demonstrable effect on Irvin and his business. Reading through this last “update” gives us other gems like:
Right. So, remember, Rick did a follow-up on this story. Talked to Lloyd, got his side of things, admitted he was a little too snarky in the initial post given the seriousness of the situation. Yay. Everybody hug.
Yeah, that’s taking responsibility and apologizing for a mistake — just like any reputable “newspaper” would do. I’d love to see a retraction like that in the NYTimes someday.
Then the latest update is kind enough to give some examples of the emails sent in. Unfortunately it looks like the emails chosen were written by some of the least literate members of this community — which is usually quite literate and well-spoken.
You’re right that further email diatribes are not going to help. Still, if Deadspin wants to act like a reputable journalistic outlet and compare itself to newspapers in the way it handles these kinds of mistakes and irresponsible postings, it’d be nice if it could at least act reasonably professionally in the process.

As I posted on the fan post
…that is entirely what I expect from that site since Will Leitch left. They have moved past humorous insight into the sports world into just being the exact thing that Will used to defend them against being. Irresponsible jerks who are looking to write something "funny" with no regard for fact or responsibility. They’ve become the EXACT thing that they claimed they weren’t for years. They want to be seen as legit..but they hide behind "we’re just bloggers!" every time someone calls them on their shit.
And the truth is…we never stood a chance in getting them or their readers to take us seriously because if you don’t agree with them you’re just a nerd. It doesn’t matter if you make a legitimate point…because it is only a rush to make an inside "deadspin joke" or a dick joke as quickly as possible. And I know my saying that would bring a smile to the face of their readers because they all get a kick out of the lack of intelligent discussion on the site.
Deadspin died when Will left…what is currently at the address is just worthless garbage for sports fans who want their own Perez Hilton

Deadspin saga shouldn't just be left as is
Luke – I don’t see why you think the BE Community should just let this go as is. As Lloyd Irvin said (who btw is someone I had never heard of before until this story) if you search his name and find the article you will see the original article by Rick Chandler. If, as a member of the public you merely read this article and don’t bother to click any updates you’ll still only get the impression that this sotry was made up.
AND READ THE UPDATE!!
"I called the Prince George’s County police department, where a Det. Cobb confirmed that an incident had been reported, but that he couldn’t comment on it further. According to Irvin, the events went like this:"
It still sounds like Irvin made some stuff up or exaggerated the situation etc. The headline of the so-called ‘update’ is ‘In Which I Am Yelled At By A Black Belt Jiu-Jitsu Champion". What sort of response is that??
The problem with Deadspin’s handling of the situation is the entire lack of class. They should at the minimum be asked to do the following:
1. State clear and categorically on the original article that the article was made on assumptions that have now been proved to be false.
2. Rick Chandler should be required to issue a public apology on Deadspin for jumping to conclusions. You want to be a journalist – try to get your facts straight. If you get them wrong APOLOGIZE. This is what every major paper or news outlet does – they include a line that says ‘we got this wrong. We apologize.’
They should probably change the headlines of the articles as well. I’m an avid BE reader and I love the BE Community. But I’m still my own person and I’ll continue to write to Deadspin in hope that the editor will do what’s right.

Alternatively
I’ll start by putting up 20 bucks to Lloyd Irvin in support of his legal fees to sue Rick Chandler. If 200 BE readers put up 20 bucks we’d be getting somewhere.
If this happens my advice to Lloyd would be – don’t ask for money. Ask for a public open apology that is given front page status on the Deadspin home page. For the following reasons:
1. This lawsuit should create a number of media followings (because people taking bloggers to account is currently rare).
2. The media would report the whole story including the fact that the robbery and disarming actually DID happen.
3. It would start a precedent to support ‘responsible blogging’. Now BE is a prime example of responsible blogging. No one is saying you can’t express any extreme views you want. Brent Brookhouse could come out and say Anderson Silva sucks balls and that Jens Pulver could kick his ass and I would have no complaints. But if you’re stating something factual – try to back it up with sources or at least try to check it out first. If you get it wrong – say so and apologize to whoever you may have offended.
