Joe Stevenson Will Fight as Black Belt at UFC 91

Fronted by Luke Thomas.

UFC.com is reporting that Joe Stevenson received his blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:

Lightweight contender Joe 'Daddy' Stevenson got a nice boost before his big UFC 91 fight on Saturday as he was awarded his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by highly decorated grappling standout and former BJJ world champion Robert Drysdale.

Stevenson, who has ended three of his last four UFC wins via guillotine choke, faces Kenny Florian this weekend in the co-featured bout of UFC 91 – Couture vs Lesnar at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Congrats to Stevenson! Hopefully we get a nice technical battle and both guys don't try to stand up and pitter-patter each other to a decision.

I think Florian is too much for Joe Daddy. Should be a barn burner though!

I think the real news here is

that Stevenson didn’t already have his black belt. That’s gotta be the most overdue promotion I’ve ever heard of.

Only Sim Go has received a black belt from Laimon. It took Drysdale to give it to him.

Correct me if I am wrong, but hasn’t Joe been doing BJJ longer than Drysdale? Kinda ironic heh.

I’ve become a Drysdale fan after the piece you guys did on him made me look up some of his videos and stuff.

thanks for saying that.
I put a lot of work into that post and it felt like it kind of fell on deaf ears. Glad to know someone was paying attention.

Hey, isn’t the fact that you didn’t get over 9000 posts saying how bad it was worth something in the land if the internet? Doesn’t that mean what you wrote was a resounding success?

But ya, it was a great article and I checked out the videos too, which were cool to watch. I need to get around to watching more top level BJJ competitions.

I hope we get a good ground battle – it’s been a while since we’ve had one of those.

No doubt.

I think guys are fighting way too conservatively these days, keeping fights on the outside and looking for the home run shot.

I still think there needs to be a points awarded system for fighters, with vicious and entertaining/decisive victories rewarded far more than long, drawn-out decisions. Right now, a win is a win, and that just doesn’t work for promoting exciting fights. Don’t get me wrong, Silva does an out*standing* job of match-making, but these guys need to be given incentive to lay it out there when their futures are on the line. At least, more incentive than they currently receive.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

Bloody pools of blood.

Kenny takes it to the mat at least once every fight he is in. I can’t wait to see it with Daddy.

Congrats to Joe, great accomplishment.

I agree there is something to the way fights are going down. I believe due to the judging and fans reaction, guys with great ground skills, are less likely to fight there. Judges seem to know little about that part of the sport and penalize guys for being on the ground. And the fans, well, don’t even get me started…
