The problem with the Silva fight in particular and UFC 90 in general:

1. Chicago was a new market. (new media, etc…)

2. Chicago is the number 1 ppv market for the UFC.

The problem with Silva was not that he was feeling him out… it was the “perceived goofing around”

To a generic fan all those antics seemed like he wasn’t being serious… and when you spend boku bucks on a show you’re paying to see a serious athlete.

If you kept the same fight strategy and took away the antics (hand shuffling, dancing around, bowing, etc…) the story would be completely different.

The impact of UFC 90 would have been the same but Silva’s star equity wouldn’t have taken such a hit…

Instead of the conversation being about Sliva’s antics it would have been about Cote’s knee.

I don’t think for the most part people are looking or complaining that it wasn’t a tough man contest I believe people are just looking for a serious display.

Wait til after UFC 91 if Lesnar and Couture isn’t an epic battle, people will complain twice as much and forget all about UFC 90.

Right, but I still think the complaints are exaggerated in their seriousness.

Boxing and MMA cross over is not big in general but within the hardcore mma base it is real.

So the Mosley fight will have an impact.

I wonder if this will really hurt Anderson at all. If anything, it creates some controversy, and as long as he returns with a brutal KO he may end up even stronger.

well if he was suffering from complacency all the backlash has surely remedied that…

He is not liking the talk.

As far as hurting… do you think he can carry a UFC 90 type card again? It will be higher than his old numbers but he needs to be resold to a certain extent.

The blue ball theory… if there’s no other way to get off then maybe you will call up that chick that gave you blue balls last time… yeah she was a good fuck before but last impressions always leave that doubt… some will buy her dinner and some will try other avenues.

I think he does need to be re-sold a little, but only inasmuch as he needs one more big fight where he gets a KO and then he could again. If he KOs Liddell in February, all is good for him.

Luke, I found your perspective on UFC 90 refreshing. I did not hate the Maynard/Clementi fight and I can appreciate what Silva was trying to do.

Its a shame that so many fans don’t appreciate active positional battles like Maynard/Clementi, and stick and move tactics. I guess that’s why so many fans can’t appreciate what Machida does.

I think as far as fans being disappointed by UFC 90 it comes down to relativity. MMA Ratings tracks event performance on a 5 star scale and what we can see is that UFC events (not including Fight Nights) range from 3 to almost 5 stars. So when a UFC event gets only 3 stars, it basically performed as poorly as it could.

Also, props for repping international MMA on the show.
