Wish

we could get these interviews on tape for those of us who cannot listen @wk, but would love to hear his comments.

Just started listening… but he said he made 6 figures for the fight and after the fight, people were making death threats to his manager and he was getting stuff throw at him.

Whoa!!

I wonder how much of that was from taking the Fergie fight? I commented on another thread about how Seth & his corner seemed scared to death after that fight. They were looking around at Fergie & his entourage like they were expecting to get mugged.

I still wonder if Rosa got paid or screwed.

I haven’t seen the payroll disclosed anywhere, but I’m sure he was at least given his fee to show, and probably a bonus on top of that.

I hope so

but with EXC, the opposite wouldn’t surprise me either.

I can’t listen to the audio but does anyone really think he set up Kimbo for the KO. It seemed more of a defensive action that had a lot more luck to it than anything. The punch to me didn’t even look like it hit Kimbo in the jaw or on the side of the head that would drop him, more like it stunned Slice and Seth used that to his advantage. Not trying to underplay his performance but it seems a bit disingenuous to think that Petruzelli had this as his plan all along.

How Seth set up his punch ...

Back into cage, throw a front kick to ward off the charging bull, throw a jab hoping for distance, react in disbelief as Kimbo swan dives for the mat, then jump on him and hammerfist for all your worth.

Perfect set up.

He said in the post fight presser that he got freaked out by Kimbo charging across the cage ‘like a big truck’ and was just trying to create distance.

The jab/straight punch/whatever managed to hit Kimbo in a good spot, as he was moving forward, which stunned him. The hammer fist to the back/top of the head knocked him silly, and the bunches of punches finished him.

That’s about as accurate and un-biased as you’ll get.

Monsters : Even though you only had an hour to get ready for this fight against kimbo, what was your strategy fighting against Kimbo, uh, err, uh, were you tryin to uh, submission him out?

Seth Petruzelli: My original plan was to throw a lot of push kicks, called teeps, and try to rush in more, and then shoot in on him, obviously.

M: So you wanted to get him on the ground? There’s no way you wanted to box him standing up?

SP: Not really, but I train with lots of undefeated pro boxers, a couple guys have a belt, and my style kinda throws them off a bit, I have kind of an awkward style. So, I knew I would do alright standing up with him. THE PROMOTERS KINDA HINTED TO ME, AND THEY GAVE ME THE MONEY TO STAND AND TRADE WITH HIM. THEY DIDN’T WANT ME TO TAKE HIM DOWN. LETS JUST PUT IT THAT WAY.

M: Ahhh.. ok.

SP: It was worth my while to try and stand up and punch with him."

god I hate the sound of that. promoters paying him to fight a certain way, that sounds terrible.
I guess I’m glad it paid off then, I can’t imagine how pissed they were when it fucking blew up in their faces.

I don’t really mind the sound of it at all. Who wants to see a Kimbo Slice on the ground. I’ve seen it before and it was boring as hell. I think a promoter would be remiss in their fight promotion if they didn’t make sure the fighters know what is most marketable about them. In otherwords a fighter always wants to know what they can do to be brought back for another fight with a bigger payday.

For his statement regarding getting paid to stand and trade, sounds like it could be a fight bonus to me. It’s come out to be that he was paid 50,000 for the fight, but Seth states that he got over 6 figures so that difference came from somewhere. I’m guessing a knock-out bonus.

Petruzelli, hinted at a big payday next fight and new contract. I could just hear the outcry if he was “made” to come back and fight on his old contract. That contract is probably $2000-$5000. He signed it right he should have to fight on it! So yah, I’m sure there were lots of hints.

I know I’m arguing somewhat on the other extreme, BUT I’m certainly not going to put too much stock into these quotes until he recovers from his hangover (Where’s the transcription of the puke comments, lol) and stands by his statement.

BINGO!

Thanks Nick, I wondered if this sort of thing happened in MMA. A guy being pd to not fight a particular style, whether it be for a more exciting fight or to ensure a top fighter is not exposed. I guess we found out way more with this outcome than we would have had Seth taken him down & sub’d him or something.

a) Just because it happens in Elite XC, I wouldn’t jump to thinking it’s a regular thing elsewhere in MMA.

b) I think this does tell us a lot more. If Seth took him down and pounded him out or submitted him at the end of round 1 or later in the fight, I’d buy the game plan excuse, but he just got punched because he rushed in sloppily, it doesn’t matter who you gameplanned for, that was just bad technique.

Agree completely,

but this is the only confirmation we have ever recd re this in MMA.
