Chuck Liddell vs. Anderson Silva?

Apparently, Dana white doesn't seem to concerned.

I disagree.

What better of a time to put on a huge money-maker fight like this?!  I guess Anderson Silva is getting too bored,

What better time to put on a huge PPV draw between a fighter at the top of the world against a former Champion trying to get back on top?  Especially when one fighters career has completely jumpstarted (Silva) and he hasn't yet quite tasted the $ (success) that is in front of him fighting a opponent like Liddell who realizes his time could be limited but knows how to turn a single fight into a lifelong 401k.

P.S. Sorry guys, first time FanPost over here.  I definitely thinks it's a topic worth discussing.  If anybody at BE has a picture to add to this post, please do!

Putting that fight on as a co-main event with Penn vs. GSP would make for an amazing card during Super Bowl weekend. Throw in Silva vs. Lyoto and that will probably be a better card than UFC 84.

Anderson wants to fight again soon, and he wants a challenge. Why not put him against Liddell? If he wins, it continues the claim to establish him as the top pound for pound champion, if he losses, well again, he lost in a weight class where he moved up to, so the damage is minimal.

Chuck has said he wants to fight, and keep fighting. Realistically, at the pace we’ve seen, Chuck does not have a whole lot of big money fights left. This is one of them though. Plus, at any point in time Chuck is two wins away from a title shot.

This would be a great match-up in diverse striking styles which could see some wild action.

While I don’t know about two wins from a title shot, he definitely is a fighter people enjoy watching. It would be interesting to see the strategy from two counter strikers. A win could do either one alot of good

It just doesnt make sense at this current time

The UFC is pretty much set through the end of January. UFC’s 91, 92, 94 are all pretty huge cards as far as keeping interest and focus on them goes, and the little downtime between 91 and 92 is being filled with the fight for the troops. 93 could be interesting but is pretty much just an appetizer before 94.

Now before you talk about adding this fight to the Dec 10th fight for the troops, iirc that is on free TV and I know at least Liddel and most likely Silva at this point both have PPV percentages, so wasting the hype that could be built around this for a free event doesnt really make sense for either of them.

If this fight happens, it will most likely be sometime in the spring, to anchor the UFC’s plan for that time period, much as Lesnar/Couture and BJ/GSP are anchoring fall and winter.

There is also the megacard burnout that could end up happening, where so many “huge” events so rapidly end up hurting the potential for each.

Reasons why it should NOT happen

1: People have been saying they want to see Silva fight the best. Liddel is not the best, and whether he’s even still good is debatable.
2: Despite his downfall, Chuck is still a big draw for the UFC. Silva would take him out and run any money the UFC might get from him in can fights.
3: Silva has said repeatedly that he wants a challenge. Chuck is no challenge. Silva picks his opponents apart with crazy-accurate striking, and mucho elusiveness. Chuch keeps on fist in the barrel, and the other in his pocket. He also just said that he doesn’t bother to check kicks, because they don’t hurt him.

All in all, while it might do money, it’s a long term bad idea for the UFC, for Silva and for Chuck.

1. Liddell beat Wand’s ass just 2 fights ago, questioning whether he’s good is beyond ignorant.
2. Silva couldn’t take out Cote at MW, if anything the reason this shouldn’t happen is becaue Liddell would ruin Anderson as a draw.
3. Anderson should worry about being the best if he can’t be bothered to show up and destroy supposed lesser competition he might as well retire now.

Liddell was good...

Your statement that he beat Wand’s @$$ though accurate does not support your claim that Chuck is still good. What has Wand done of late?

Chuck has been KTFO by one punch in 2 of his last four fights. Jardin beat him. Chuck is and has always been a one-trick pony. He is a brawler. Now that he his getting older, his reflexes are slowing. If he continues to hold his hands at his waist and throw looping punches including uppercuts from long-range he will continue to be on highlight films for brutal knockouts.

Give Silva SOME credit. You are essentially dissing him because he did not KO Cote in under three rounds. He won rounds 1 & 2. Look at his fights in the UFC and compare them against Liddell’s over the same period. Liddell has at best – a puncher’s chance (and it is a slim one at that).

Liddell needs to fight aging one-dimensional fighters who have no striking skills – like Tito and Couture. Anyone, who is not afraid of him with the ability throw straight punches – will beat him 8 or more time out of ten.

If you really care about Chuck you would not want him to fight an Anderson with a chip on his shoulder.

Wanderlei did destroy Keith Jardine not long ago.

I won't dispute the Wanderlei victory over Jardin...

It was a good and much needed win for him. I would be interested to he see how Wanderlei would fair in a longer fight with Jardin. Jardin never seems to get over the hump. He has horrible showings against Houston Alexander and Wanderlei while trying to get a title shot. I respect all MMA fighters. I certainly don’t dislike Chuck. My only point is: Chuck is done. There is a new breed of fighter out there with an array of skills – Silva, Penn, GSP. One dimensional fighters are going the way of the dinosaur. Chuck and Matt Hughes are both aging and one dimensional. Chuck strikes (without being a boxer) and defends the take-down. Matt wrestles you without being a striker. Father time saps both reflexes and strength.

I think A. Silva fights frequently (barring injury) to complete his 6 fight obligation and then tries his hand at boxing where he would earn 10x what he makes in MMA. Once his contract is done with the UFC, he would demand at least $2Million to fight RJJ. He might even get twice that.

I wouldn’t say he beat Wanderlei’s ass – he edged him out maybe

Silva needs to alternate between superfights (culminating in a shot at the LHW title holder) and title defenses at MW. His schedule for next year could look something like this:

1. Liddell
2. Okami
3. GSP
4. Bisping/Henderson/Franklin
5. Griffin/Evans/Jackson/W.Silva

How awesome would those fights be?

by klown on Nov 1, 2008 12:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I like that...

A healthy Rampage would give Silva a great fight. Rashad also has both the boxing and wrestling background to make an interesting fight. At 185 – only Henderson could make an interesting fight for him. I don’t see any of the others causing Silva to have any sleepless nights. GSP is just too small. Granted it was a lucky punch, but if Serra put him in Neverland at 170, I don’t see him beating Silva.

I have stated plenty times before, I never thought Dana White would allow Chuck Liddell to fight Anderson. As seen, Dana is very questionable about the fight. I think Anderson Silva needs a guy who has defeated some of the top fighters and who has a current win underneath their belt. I think Keith Jardine, who has headlined UFC 76, and co-main evented at UFC 89 which was free for the world to see, I believe Keith Jardine vs. Anderson Silva is the toughest fight at 205 that is available RIGHT now.

I would be interested in seeing how Silva would handle Machida. He is unorthodox to say the least and could prove a challenge for Silva with his elusive style. Say what you want about his methods, they work and would tell us how Anderson could handle someone who doesn’t “stand and bang”.

by fightfan942 on Nov 2, 2008 1:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably rely on his knowledge of Machida’s style from training with him…
Also they wont fight eachother.

by iiowyn on Nov 2, 2008 2:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Silva would beat Machida...

Yes Machida is elusive. Yes his Karate is world class – but he seeks to capitalize on other people’s aggression/mistakes. If he stands and fights, he will get stopped. If he retreats and counters like he did against Tito, he will lose a decision. If he is lucky, he may beat Silva 2 rounds to 1 in a 3 round fight. If it is for a championship, I don’t see Machida winning a five round fight.
