What happened in

the Franca fight? I looked and have not seen anything about it.

Franca took the decision

apparently Aurelio landed a legal knee to the face and the ref thought it was illegal and made him stop. He might have finished it right there otherwise. Serious lack of action in that fight.

Thanks Nate,

what the heck happened to this “Brazilian grudgematch” we were supposed to see? I was hoping they would end up having a knife fight in the 3rd round.

my theory

is that BJJ vs BJJ matches almost always suck. No one wants to go to the ground, no one has the wrestling to force it to the ground anyway and the striking isnt that great. You’ve got guys who are used to having a big technical advantage over their opponents suddenly being reduced to very human fighters.
Jorge Gurgel vs Diego Saraiva is the classic example of this.
Of course when one guy thinks he has an advantage on the ground it can be a good one — see Jorge Gurgel vs Alvin Robinson, where Gurgel’s perceived advantage on the ground evaporates.

I agree with that,

but is still funny after all of the prefight talk between these guys.

FYI – UFC90 Compustrike Stats for Silva vs. Cote

The tentative Silva got off just 52 total strikes through two rounds, landing 27, nine of which were leg strikes. Cote was busier in rounds one and two with 65 strikes attempted, but he landed just 13 before an injured knee forced the fight to be halted :39 into round three.

How many of those 52 strikes that Cote didn’t land were that tentative jab that he kept throwing out at nothing in particular more than a foot away from Silva?

Nasty choke byThales.

McFedries went out real quick.

Great shot of Sherk and Griffin too.

by Chris Nelson on Oct 27, 2008 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

He went out FAST. He tapped, less than two seconds later the choke was let go and by that time McFedries had gone completely unconscious.

late stoppage

I thought that the ref was slow in stopping Junior Dos Santos. Werdum took 5 shots before the ref saved him.my problem with the fight was that Fabricio was already KOed & face down and the ref had to look at his face to determine if he was out.he should have stopped the fight as soon as Werdum’s face hit the floor.

I don’t think anyone initially realized how hurt Werdum was.

What a joke that this wasn’t the Sub of the night. The way he applied it so that McFedries had absolutely no defense was brilliant.

Hard to believe spencer Fishers triangle choke was mopre impressive.

If it would have been against anyone other than drew, it probably would have been, lol!!
