Quote of the Day: Patrick Cote's Preparedness

“Even with a rough start in the UFC, I’ve always believed in myself and I came back strong and right now I have a UFC title fight...And the other thing is, I’m not intimidated by Anderson Silva. I respect him a lot, but you know, he’s a man made out of flesh and bone like me, so I ain’t scared of him at all.
“I just have to execute our game plan the day of the fight. It’s going to be a very hard fight, but we’re very confident that we are going to win. I will knock him out. He’s the best fighter in the world, so it’s going to be very good to be world champion and to have a win against the best fighter in the world at the same time.”
-- Patrick Cote, sounding as confident and ready as one can be nearing a fight with UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva at UFC 90.

something keeps telling me that Cote might try and take Anderson to the ground. I know he keeps talking about standing and trading but what kind of game plan is that when your fighting anderson silva?

I really don’t know what else fighters are expected to say here. ‘Wow, I am out of my league here.’ ‘What on earth was I thinking?’ ‘If I catch him, I can win, if he catches me, he can win.’
I, for one, appreciate the comment that he’s flesh and bone. Because, as we all know, the only cyborg fighter is Fedor. If you don’t believe me, rewatch the Fujita and Randleman fights.

Strikers with no ground game (Read Cote) have virtually no chance against Anderson. The guy is easily the most complete striker in the UFC. So, going in against a guy that does what you do, only 10x better and thinking you can win just doesn’t add up.

Silva is a BJJ black belt,
but chooses not to utilize it in most of his fights. I really do not see any way Cote gnp’s a decision against him without getting sub’d. I do like his comments & Subo is exactly right, any fighter coming into a fight should be saying the same things. Hopefully, we get to see something akin to St Pierre/Fitch but I am really not thinking that is going to happen.

Cote taking Silva down and actually winning because of it seems outlandish, as you said. But he does have a pretty nice jaw. If he chickens out just a little better than Rich or Dan this could go on for a while. But, even that’s doubtful. Silva rocked Dan, and he has a bucket of concrete on his shoulders. Is Cote’s defense better than Dan’s? Perhaps. I don’t honestly know. But if he tries to trade Muay Thai he’s gonna be in pain.
Gonna be interesting to see what gameplan Cote’s camp chose, though.

He sounds confident.
But then, so did everyone else right before they got knocked out. I really think the only way Cote can beat Silva is if Silva has a brain fart. Silva has repeatedly said he wants to retire and his head may not be in the game anymore. Maybe he’s bored, maybe he’s just over MMA; whatever the reasons, if Silva has a mental lapse, and Cote keeps his focus and isn’t afraid like he says he is, then we might see a shocker. I doubt it, but I’ll be cheering for my fellow Canadian all the same.

Wow... I know for certain what to make of this now
I’m sorry.. But this is one step too far.
I know there are those of you that say “What is he supposed to say?”, unrequited, and almost on cue. He’s entirely over-compensating, and it’s gone beyond merely posturing and illustrating his confidence into the realm of penis-pumping.
I just don’t buy it anymore. The first time, even the second time, that he did this whole bit— I did believe he was confident in his abilities. After as many times as he’s harped this bit (five or more?), rationalizing to himself (because, of course, this is rhetoric, public or not) that Anderson Silva is a man like any other, made of flesh and bone, and as beatable as the last guy— it positively reeks of fear.
We’ll find out definitively on Saturday, but Cote’s already terrible chances just went even lower in my assessment.

Errr..
ok, on cue as you say…
You are being really really silly if you really really think that he should really really be saying, “What the fuck man.. don’t even buy the ppv people. I stand no chance, and some random nobody on a blog finds my confidence to be equal to nothing more than penis pumping. All my training, all the strategies… meh, we didn’t even bother trying to find a way to beat this Silva-God. I am shrugging because I have no chance.”
Get over it, dude… people who go into fights would prefer to try to win. If you don’t like that, don’t fight but stfu about the people who do.

You're pretty ridiculous
I never said he should concede. You’re turning it into the opposite extreme.
by Blackout612 on Oct 22, 2008 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And please..
..don’t assume to know the first thing about what I do and don’t do.
You’re terribly forceful with your opinions. Fighters normally aren’t as deliberate about his point as he’s being. Matter of factly saying you’re going to knock out Anderson Silva, to me, is much the same as if Timmay did the same (ad naseum) regarding Fedor. I am absolutely entitled to make a distinction between merely being confident and going well beyond that into play-ground fighting territory; telling all your friends how bad you’re going to beat some kid up at lunch time because the anxiety is making you crazy. And he, too, is entitled to make those comments. I don’t care about that. But I think it’s too much, for the impression he’s seemingly trying to make. If you don’t like that, go read some other comments.

1: Stop crying, dude. It’s the internet and I’m also a random nobody on a blog. Don’t be all personal about it.
2: You’re entitled to say whatever you want, clearly. And I’m entitled to point out how ridiculous it is for someone to say, “He shouldn’t be saying he is going to win against Silva! The gall!”
3:
Matter of factly saying you’re going to knock out Anderson Silva, to me, is much the same as if Timmay did the same (ad naseum) regarding Fedor.
Or Serra vs. GSP? Or Evans vs. Liddel? or.. oh shit, you can do a google search if you need to listing of people who couldn’t win a fight actually winning a fight.
Disclaimer: I believe Silva will dismantle Cote easily. I’m not, however, getting bent out of shape because Cote is going to try to win. Imagine, a guy fighting for a title wanting to win. Crazy world.

Who's bent out of shape?
You’re accusing me of the other extreme, genius. This is the most casual part of my day, posting on BE. Deep breaths, man.. You’re going to be ok..

I’d refer you to the beginning of this sub-thread, where you ranted about Cote. But clearly you’re more interested in trying to be insulting than reasonable. Good day, sir.

I know Silva is gonna win...
But man would it be nice to see an upset. Does Silva even have a button that someone can hit?
by xFenixKnightx on Oct 22, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Everyone has one. The problem with Silva is getting close enough to him to hit it without getting “Sandmanned” (punched out standing) or “Franklined” (kneed unconscious from the clinch). He has under-rated head and foot movement, and his reach combined with his speed provide a hell of a gauntlet for anyone to run. It’s not that Silva has an iron chin; in fact, it’s hard to say much about his chin at all since he so rarely takes a solid shot.
by AJB on Oct 22, 2008 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not sure
About silva’s speed. He’s fast, but I don’t think his hand speed is what gets it, his reaction time is riddiculous, he likes to time his opponent and counter, a fast fighter can have slow reaction time and vice versa. Also I disagree that his head and foot movement are underated, I would say those are pretty established facts.
But yes you are right, he’s a touch guy to hit. Though I am willing to bet on his chin, he’s fought some guys known for one punch k.o. power, and its not like he has never been hit, just seldom hit.
by JaeeJaee on Oct 22, 2008 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed with your comment about speed: it’s not the raw, athletic speed of a guy like GSP, it’s the reaction time that lets him find the smallest crack and exploit it. As for his head and foot movement and whether or not they’re established facts, I guess it depends who you talk to. I think his record of knockouts has diverted some of the attention away from his technical proficiencies onto his “KNOCKOUT STRENGTH RAWWRRR!!” Not among everyone, of course, but among some.

When you put it like that
i see what you mean. I think that’s attributed largely to the fact that many mma fans were never really boxing fans or true muay thai fans, so they miss the subtleties of stiking, not realizing that a properly placed punch is much more likely to achaieve the ko then some random haymaker, and that good movement (both head and feet) will put you where you need to be without getting hit and allowing plenty of time to aim.
and when you put it liek that I think I can agree that the average mma fan is probably thinking along the lines of SILVA-KONG instead of silva just being an exceptionally fluid fighter.

“that someone can hit?” lol!

The danger with hyping
Obviously it is that you run a very real risk of looking stupid at the end of the fight. If Cote believes it’s worth it, so be it. I for one don’t belive he actually means it, so he won’t lose a lot of credit at my house when he loses (when, that’s right). But one has to think that a lot of Canadians might tune in first time for this – what will their reaction be? Is it worth it? I wouldn’t go out on a limb like that, for sure.
by ununkvadrium on Oct 22, 2008 4:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Anderson's shirt is nice...
Cote can’t do much worse than many of the people that have fought Silva thus far in his career, so I don’t really feel like he is over hyping himself. And who knows he may actually hit him once or twice…
I, for one, think Cote means what he says. If you have GSP telling you that there is a chance you can win, you might just believe it.
