Realization of the Day in Mixed Martial Arts

Life just got significantly more difficult and career options suddenly narrowed for Tito "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Ortiz. I would be very surprised to not see him return to the UFC despite the turmoil with Dana White. He has to see the market contractions coming irrespective of distaste for White and his antics. At least, one thinks he has to see them.

If he goes back to the UFC, Dana will see it as him coming crawling back because he has limited options and I think will take the oppurtunity to bend Ortiz over a barrell.

I highly doubt he will recieve the same offer Lorenzo offered him before he left.

The mechanics of the deal may not be amicable or as fair as they were, but that they will happen one way or the other is my bet.

I don’t think there is any way he gets the money he wants. Affliction is coming to the realization that overpaying is bad and UFC has a ton of LHWs, including 3-4 coming on the cheap from TUF.

He’s going to realize that eventually and go back to the UFC.

He may not get the cash from the org that he is looking for, but being in the UFC gives him the most opportunities to make money in other ways.

Couldn’t agree more.

Why would the UFC bother to sign him? They have no real competition, and can fill their rosters with 5 and 10k making TUF guys. I think it seems like the direction they have been going lately anyway. Look at the main events lately.

UFC 90 4 of 10 figthers on main card were TUF alums

89 5 of 10

88 3 of 10

87 3 of 10

The UFC draws no matter who fights. Why spend top dollar if it isnt necissary?

Basically agree, but if they could sign him for under 100k per fight, it might be worth it. Regardless of how one views him, there is no doubt he is a draw. Plus he has the size to fight at HW if the opportunity arose.

Love to see him make a run at some heavyweights, I just don’t see him making the smallest dent in a stacked division like LHW.

Sorry, hit enter by accident.

After that last EXCBS show, i thought it might be enough to propel them another 6-12 months, especially with that Showtime card coming up. Apparently not.

I’d bet someone elses left nut that the investigation had something to do with it. If I recall, they said the investigation would take about a week or two, and EliteXC folded about a week or two after they said that.

You know, if that is accurate at all, I hope it never comes to light. I think despite Dana’s hard work to distance UFC from mma, it would certainly hurt the sport to some extent. Especially with idiots like Wilbon and Kornheiser out there.

I don't know

I think most people assume it was fixed to begin with (either Seth paid to stand, or Kimbo paid to dive – I’ve heard both). If it was, and the investigation caused the company to go belly up – that may do more to add credibility to the sport – showing that they won’t stand for fight fixing.

No idea, I just hope whichever way it goes, we get more free fights.

Yes, I just don’t want any negative views of mma added.

There are a LOT of stories coming out of this.

For instance, Hector Lombard finally got a bloody visa to get to the States and just as hes does the organization he’ll debut for goes up in smoke.

by SamCupitt on Oct 21, 2008 11:47 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I claim ignorance here. So does he now lose his visa? Or is there a time frame for him to secure work with another entity?

I’m not sure of the details, all I know is that he had sorted out the problems that stopped him from fighting Parisyan at UFC 78.

He was going to make his US debut against Scott Smith at the November card for EliteXC but now that be dead in the water.

Thanks, Sam.

Not sure of the specifics here, but I can tell you that getting visas to the US is always a major pain in the ass.

I’ve always said Tito would be back in the UFC. The UFC was the only place for longevity and to finish out a legacy. Tito had to see the writing on the wall. If not, he’s a bigger idiot than Dana says he is.

UFC killed EXC

It was Dana and the Fretittas who pulled the strings that caused Florida to investigate. Kenny and Bas alluded to the speculation on “Inside MMA” on Friday. They had the girl from the Florida commission on the show. They asked her the question and she said something along the lines of. “We were contacted by another promotion. However a formal complaint was never filed”. So reading between the lines. It’s fairly obvious what happened.

That's ludicrous.

ProElite was dependent on CBS to keep them alive. “Standgate” may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of the deal, but their outlook was pretty grim. There’s enough there regarding the situation to warrant an investigation without Zuffa getting involved. More is coming out now that people inside EXC are free to talk.

by Cannon Jacques on Oct 21, 2008 12:29 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Let's pretend...

Let’s pretend for a minute that the UFC called Florida and asked for an investigation. Now let’s pretend that the investigation proved what everyone already assumes – the fight was fixed in some way.

How in the hell would this be the UFCs fault? It would still be EliteXC’s fault for fixing the fight to begin with. In addition to the money that they were never able to make and the debt they were able to make – No one should be blamed but themselves.

by mythbuster on Oct 21, 2008 12:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh come on

Now you’re just being logical.

by asa on Oct 21, 2008 1:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dana White said in an interview that if he had to, he’d file a complaint himself or something to that affect. Who cares? What’s your point? No one should have said anything and let that shitty org get away with what they did? Ya right.

by LiuLang on Oct 21, 2008 1:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’ve got a feeling that Tito may of been wanting to stay in the UFC all along and he was just trying to use all these other organizations as leverage to get a better contract. He did claim he was on the verge of signing other places last time his contract was up and he ended back up in the UFC with a really good contract perhaps he though he could do that again.

by who me on Oct 21, 2008 1:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I predict Tito will go back to being a crack head.
