Intelligent Questions Re: UFC 89 Only, Please!

Fronted by Luke Thomas.

Tomorrow I'll be flying down to Birmingham to start my coverage of UFC 89 for ESPN; the first part of this will be attending the pre-fight press conference. The principal attendees will be

  • Marshall Zelaznik (President of UK ops for the UFC)
  • Michael Bisping
  • Chris Leben
  • Brandon Vera
  • Keith Jardine
  • Marcus Davis
  • Paul Kelly

Now, if any of you have intelligent questions that you might like me to put to these guys, I'll see what I can do.

Bear in mind that I'm a photographer and will only ask questions if I have the time to do so. There's also a good chance that other reporters present may ask a similar question before I do in which case I won't repeat it.

Lastly, I don't have a dictaphone or voice recorder so I won't be able to offer up verbatim responses - so again, please do bear this in mind.

Ask Brandon for his account of the attempted robbery.

I'm not fielding questions unrelated to '89

Whilst I might ask if and how the altercation has affected his pre-fight mindset, I’m not going down that road.

He’s said in a couple interview that he won’t talk about it until after the fight.

Ask Zelaznik if his office is working in any capacity with the people preparing UFC’s Asian shows for 2009

AFAIK this is Dana & Lorenzo's ballpark

Marshall is involved in expanding the UFC throughout the UK and Europe; I’d lay good money on other territories such as Asia being the provenance of Lorenzo and Dana… particularly Lorenzo.

For Vera – does he believe he’ll be dumped by the UFC if he loses?

oh man everyone is gonna aske Vera about the robbery

Ask Zelaznik, about what he thought of the UFC when he was with In Demand PPV. Did he think it would be the leading PPV provider? What was his reaction when Dana tried to sell him the UFC in the beginning? How did he end up working for the UFC?

BISPING: has the addition of rampage to your camp effected your preparation for the fight in any way. does he add anything to the group that was otherwise missing? and cheick kongo as well?

BISPING: with the next season of TUF set to be us vs uk, you seem to be a lock for one of the seasons coaches. does the outcome of this fight with chris effect that, and if not… who would you prefer to coach AGAINST?

I love the second question

the most important question to ask is if Gono is going to be one of his epic ring entrances.

VERA: this being your second fight at 205, you’ve said that you’ve been better prepared as far cutting weight. do you wish that you’d made the transition to LHW sooner, and if not… do you still entertain thoughts of moving back up to HW?

LEBEN: going into this fight, you seem to have re-dedicated yourself, both physically and mentally. would you say the wild TUF-era swing for the fences leben is a thing of the past, or will we see him again on saturday night?

GREAT QUESTION!

Zelaznik – The UFC is trying to make alot of breakthrough here in the UK, where do you see the UFC in relation to the UK in the next 5 years? What steps will it take to get there?

Bisping – How has the addition of Rampage and Kongo affected your training? Do you feel that these two big names are going to bring more credibility to your gym?

Leben – It is obvious that you have gone through a rebirth of sorts as a fighter and as a person overall, do you believe this will be what it takes to elevate your career and become one of the elite in the Middleweight division? What are your thoughts on Anderson Silva and would you like to be one of his last six fights on his current contract, considering how he has stated he plans to retire after the contract is up?

Vera – It is obvious that you are the type of fighter who dosen’t forget his past preformances, especially with Werdum and Andy, as you stare across the ring at Jardine Saturday night, will those loses be in your mind and will you be looking to prove to the fans that you are a force in the Light Heavyweight Division? The Light Heavyweight Division is one of the most populated and contended divisions in the sport, who is someone you would enjoy fighting at this weight class and are there any fighters you look up to in this weight class?

Jardine – What do you feel you need to accomplish in your next fights to get back into title contention?

Davis – How do you feel coming into this fight and what have you done differently in the gym for this fight compared to you last bout with Mike Swick?

ha, is there an echo in here?

by woooburn on Oct 15, 2008 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

Marshall Zelaznik

Ask him about the event in Ireland, specifically I’d like you to ask him:

-Are they trying to get certain fighters to fight in Ireland(American fighters, not Europeans) or will they ask anyone who is available?

Reason I want you to ask is because it seems the UFC wants to push certain American fighters in the European market(most notably Marcus Davis). I want to know if there are other guys who they want to push over there.
