Gina Carano talks the infamous EliteXC 'Heat' weigh-in:

"I'm okay the way the weigh-ins went," said Carano. "We can definitely do things better in the future but I can do things better in the future to try to get down to 140."

This all makes a good point. It’s not as though Gina has a ton of experience cutting weight. Most of the men who fight either fight close to their natural weight or come from a wrestling background where they’ve spent years learning how to cut weight. Those who don’t have a wrestling background and cut weight usually screw it up a few times – coming in dehydrated, weakened, missing weight.

And I have to imagine that cutting weight is different for women than it is for men – and that with fewer women cutting weight, there’s bound to be less expertise among nutritionists and coaches about what Gina should be doing.

That’s definitely a decent point, but I tend to think that she’s got the resources with Xtreme Couture to make the weight cut if possible. I really don’t like it. Gina looks like she’s going to collapse at every weigh in. It just makes sense to me for her to fight at 145 which is a more widely used weight division though EXC utilizes 140.

I do think the pay disclosure is going to buy her some goodwill with fans and competitors. That doesn’t do much for her monetarily at this point, but it may pay off down the road. The Roxy/Tara fight fell through. That’s not a good sign for higher earning women fighters. Gina better negotiate her contract with CBS, because those clowns at EXC are on thin ice. She’s far too nice about her promotion, and their ability to promote MMA.

Of course, she could just watch her weight ALL the time – more cardio, less strength training, that sort of thing. But as long as she keeps kicking ass, I’ll be a fan.

The Tara/Roxy thing is a damn shame. And Gina needs a serious payday.

Please, please, please Dana: reconsider your no-women policy. Carano and Cyborg have not destroyed 3 women on TV, blood and all, and the world hasn’t ended, the sport hasn’t been banned, and nobody seems to care.
