Florida Begins Preliminary Investigation of Kimbo Slice vs. Seth Petruzelli Fight
From Franklin McNeil's column on ESPN:
After repeated calls from ESPN.com, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation -- which oversees the State Boxing Commission -- said Thursday that it has opened a preliminary investigation into the matter.
"While the Department of Business and Professional Regulation doesn't have any reason to believe there was a problem with the Slice-Petruzelli fight, given the interest in it, the Department has begun a preliminary investigation to thoroughly review the circumstances of the fight," said Jennifer Meale, Communications Director for the DBPR.
Being honest I think nothing is going to come of this, especially considering that Jennifer Meale is already saying that they don't believe there was a problem with the fight. Regardless, the investigation had to start at some point and as long as the DBPR is not just saying they're investigating without actually DOING IT something could very well turn something up.
Regardless all of the "will this hurt EliteXC?" talk is missing the big point. ESPN is running multiple articles talking about the possibility of fight fixing on an EXC show. The company is already hurt badly, regardless of if anything is turned up or not.

I kind of thought this would happen
as they have been talking on some ESPN shows that I watch about how Elite XC is “fixing fights” like boxing was accused of doing for so long. Good
Does anyone else think this would potentially be a bigger deal to if this fight had lasted a couple rounds and Kimbo had knocked Petruzelli out and then Petruzelli had come out and said he would have preferred to take it to the ground, but got paid extra to keep it standing?
I’m not saying it isn’t a big deal as it is, because the underlying potential conduct by EXC is every bit as bad here as if the outcome of the fight had been much different. But from an investigation and sanctioning standpoint, it seems like maybe it’ll be less of a concern because the allegedly shady dealings didn’t end up benefitting Kimbo at all.
I dunno … maybe not, but I’m just wondering if that might end up playing a role in how seriously they look into this case.
It’d be a much bigger deal if Seth got KOed late in the fight rather than Kimbo getting KOed early on. Had Seth got KOed and then came out and said he was told to keep the fight standing that would be a blatant attempt to influence the fight.
It’s really despicable that Gary Shaw came out and said flat out ‘yeah I told guys to keep it standing’. This guy is trying to make MMA into the new age boxing. Whats worse is that Shaw, the freaking promoter of the company(well not anymore), can’t even appreciate the ground game. He’s got this ignorant view that the ground game isn’t exciting as the stand up game. And if he believes that and tries to get fighters to keep it standing then the casual fans will never get to see some great ground wars and then they will get the same ignorant views and will never be able to fully appreciate MMA.
Does anybody else think they wont do a very thorough investigation? I mean if she’s allready saying she doesn’t think anything wrong happened it’s possible they won’t follow up as much as they should.
yeah...
that was pretty much what went through my head when I saw it

Let's hope they find nothing AND EXC dies
Or, if they do, it’s completely isolated to EXC. Hell, maybe the ensuing firestorm from finding some dirt would help get MMA regulated by Congress like every other sport (hello, permanent UFC domination, complete with antitrust exemption)
