Is Anderson Silva Vulnerable on the Inside?

Frank Trigg thinks he knows Anderson Silva's weakness:

“Everyone’s so scared of his length and his reach that they stay way the hell outside. They’re idiots. That makes no sense. You have to be on the inside. You have to be a Mike Tyson-style boxer against him. He’s too elusive to hit in the face. He just has too much movement. You have to work his body. You have to pick him apart. You have to out-point him…. He can’t hurt you when you’re inside because his punching power is from his length and he has to be outside to kick. You have to take Anderson Silva down and hold him down. You almost have to fight him like B.J. Penn fought Sean Sherk: Constant movement, peppering him with quick shots. It’s not difficult to see how to beat Anderson Silva. What’s difficult is putting yourself to the task and understanding that the game plan isn’t going to be perfect, and when something bad happens, overcoming that bad thing. If you don’t think you would win, why the hell are you showing up? Yeah, I think I could win.”

No disrespect to Frank, but I'm confident that if he pursued this strategy with Silva he would end up unconscious very quickly.  People don't stay outside because they are afraid of his length and reach.  They stay outside because they are afraid of his clinch.  Rich Franklin tried to fight inside in the first fight, and Henderson did too.  I don't think I've ever seen an MMA fighter that can grab the Thai clinch and deliver a brutal knee as fast as Silva.  Rich Franklin got badly overpowered on the inside against Silva, I don't see any reason to believe Frank Trigg, Patrick Cote, or most anyone else at 185 could do better up close.

Nail on the head

While reading his comments, the first thing that came to mind was “Dude, his clinch”. You’d think Trigg might have taken the time to consider that before essentially calling everyone to fight Silva until now an idiot..

by Blackout612 on Oct 1, 2008 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

Pretty sure Trigg has picked against Silva a couple of times. I think he really underestimates the Spider’s skill set.

The whole time I was reading buzzers were going off in my head: “Ummm, Franklin got inside”, “Ummm, you want someone to use the same strategy against T-Rex arms Sherk and Anderson Silva?” (In fact, I don’t think Penn was really getting inside on Sherk as he was happy to out-strike him most of the fight, pretty much what Silva does to everyone, so I didn’t really understand that comparison).

by Day Man on Oct 1, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah dude..

Penn was working his jab beautifully on Sherk and that’s what did the damage. Trigg is still the same over-confident know-it-all we saw get dominated by Hughes twice when he supposedly knew something no one else did. He may be posturing for a beating at 185, but Dana knows better than to bite on this sort of rhetoric..

It’s already been said, but as soon as I started reading Trigg saying that the key is to get inside I had a mental image of Silva holding Trigg in a clinch and destroying Trigg’s face just like he did to Franklin.

Hmm...well a while back...

I remember reading a Hendo interview a few weeks before his fight with Anderson with him saying he wanted to get inside with Silva also.

I wish I could find the link.

Henderson has a better clinch game than someone like Franklin though. And when he was in the clinch, he fared OK.

OBVIOUSOTIY...

Only word I could make up to express myself, lol.

Would you rather be on the outside with Silva? Dude is a sniper, I would much rather be inside, not that it is safe there, but better than outside.

Yeah. That makes sense.

I mean sure, you could have your face kneed into oblivion in his clinch, but his main weakness is his wrestling. Can’t exploit that standing outside.

by Tonley on Oct 1, 2008 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

True: his wrestling sucks. But his clinch work is excellent and his BJJ, while not at the highest levels in the sport, is better than most wrestlers he’s likely to face. Certainly better than Hendo.

Once again: Muay Thai+BJJ is a difficult combination.

Why does his wrestling suck?

He beat Nate Marquardt by taking him down then pounding him out. Henderson got him down and couldn’t do a thing with it. Lutter had success wresting, but people forget he needed surgery on both of his knees before the fight, but put it off. Then he went on to sub him from the bottom anyway. Franklin took him down in their second fight and he popped right back up. So who really shows that he is weak there?

by EazyEismydad on Oct 1, 2008 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

“his wrestling sucks” is code for “not what you’d call great takedown defense.”

Hendo

Dan Henderson may have actually found the recipe to beat Silva – just rewatch the first round of their fight. You have to get on top of Silva and beat on him as much as possible. I don’t think Henderson did a lot of damage but he took the round. Now of course, there is a distinct problem in that it would be awfully hard to control Anderson long enough to take a decision, let along finish him. And the longer a fight goes, the greater the chance that Anderson will do some serious damage on the feet and/or in the clinch.

Anyone else think Frank Trigg should fight Frank Shamrock? Could be one of the greatest smack-talking battles in MMA history.

I thought the same thing, but Silva came out in that 2nd round and refused to let that happen again.

frank vs frank, loser can never speak again. I’m in!

just rewatch the first round of their fight.

The first thought that came to my mind.

by Tonley on Oct 1, 2008 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

A lot of people beat it to that round.

by Blackout612 on Oct 1, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

And let’s not forget: he submitted Hendo. If there were an easy answer to beating Silva, it would have been done by one of these top fighters he’s faced.

A lot of people think Hendo still has the best chance to beat Silva. He did control Silva and he did win the first round. I don’t think you can do that to the Spider for the entire match, but Hendo did say he hesitated in the second round and didn’t pull the trigger to take down Silva when he had the chance. The problem is he’d have to do more from the top than just lie on him and smother him.

That being said, whenever someone thinks they have Silva figured out, like a true champ, the guy keeps winning. He will lose one day. No body is invincible. And that would be quite a day for sure. But I can’t see anyone really beating him right now. Cote will be flatlined within the first round. Personally, I’d like to see Nate get another shot at Silva. He’d probably lose, but he’s been fighting really well as of late, and I think it would be kind of fun to watch.

My only hesitancy — and I’m a huge Silva fan and have been for a long time — is that the talk about this fight already sounds just so much like the talk about Chuck/Rashad did before that fight … and even Gonzaga/Cro Cop before that … and any number of other apparent complete mismatches that have had shocking endings. As a big Silva fan I hope that’s not the case this time, but it’s almost hard not to get an uneasy feeling about the possibility. Can you even imagine seeing Patrick Cote wearing that belt? After Silva destroyed guys like Franklin, Marquardt, Lutter, Henderson … scary.

by Kierkegaard on Oct 1, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I think a big difference with Chuck is that Anderson has a much smaller ego – Chuck was looking WAY past Rashad and even talking about the HW title.

by MMAEruption on Oct 1, 2008 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention that Chuck isn’t the most technical fighter. Silva is going to be hard to catch on a mistake that isn’t sprawl related.

I’d love to see the smack talk leading up to Trigg/Shamrock…it would be classic.

Flying Heel Hook

Help me out here. Didn’t somebody defeat Silva with the “Flying Heel Hook” ?

"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"

by Warhand on Oct 1, 2008 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Ryo Chonan did.

But you really can’t go in with that as your tactic. Not only would you almost certainly loose the match, in addition you would probably loose your camp, manager and wife.

But it is indeed an amazing snippet to behold. The spider taps in like less than two seconds.

Found it Ryo Chonan "Flying Scissor into Inverted Heel Hook"

by Warhand on Oct 1, 2008 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Possibly one of the coolest and shocking submissions I’ve seen in MMA, especially considering how Chonan was not in that fight at all and just pulls it out of no-where.

by ChillMike on Oct 1, 2008 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Go watch that fight again. Chonan wasn’t just in it, he was winning it.

by FRANKIE on Oct 1, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

WHAT !!!!

What are you talking about ? Chonan was getting tore up before he pulled that crazy Sub off. If you think Chonan was winning that fight before hand, I would hate to see your opinion of a fighter who is loosing a fight.befroe hand ?

by Shocbomb on Oct 1, 2008 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, the retroactive myth of Anderson Silva’s invulnerability. It’s a beautiful thing.

by FRANKIE on Oct 2, 2008 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Chonan was winning

Chonan was winning the fight before he subbed him. Even Bas says it on the commentary right before the submission. Watch the fight again. If you can’t see he was winning, you don’t know anything about MMA.

by Nick Travaglini on Oct 2, 2008 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

On the outside Anderson Silva looks very tough and imposing, but I’m sure that on the inside he just wants to be loved. Therefore the ideal game plan would be to give him a hug and say “I love you for who you are.”

by Ubernoober on Oct 1, 2008 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

But in that way all fighters are vulnerable on the inside. Except War Machine.
