Since opinions are like assholes -- that is, everybody has one and they all stink -- we've never posted our own rankings here at Bloody Elbow. Instead I've periodically done roundups discussing the various rankings done by the big sites. Like this.

After some discussions with Luke Thomas and Brent Brookhouse we've decided to formalize the process -- instead of rankings, Bloody Elbow will produce "Meta-Rankings" -- they won't tell you who we think the best fighters are but they'll sure as shit tell you who are considered to be the top fighters.

Rankings are based on an average of 6 Media Rankings (MMA Weekly, Sherdog, Irish Whip, MMA on Tap, our own Luke Thomas', and 5 oz of Pain), Fan Rankings (represented by MMA HQ Rankings) and Computer Rankings (represented by Fight Matrix). If we missed a good ranking someone is doing let us know, we'll add them to the mix. Particularly other computerized or fan vote rankings.

A #1 vote is worth 10 points, #2 is 9 points and so on. Media rankings are totaled and divided by 6 to represent the average media ranking, this is then added to the computer and fan ranking points to create the total (perfect score is 30 points).

One interesting thing these rankings really bring to light is the levels revealed by the point totals. It's clear that Quinton Jackson is head and shoulders above the pack with a perfect 30 points. However, Dan Henderson, Chuck Liddell and Ryoto Machida are neck and neck with less than a point separating them. Here we've got the ex-PRIDE champ, the long-time UFC champ and the rising contender all nipping at Rampage's heels. Henderson is moving down to 185. Machida has ben offered Tito Ortiz next -- a clear sign that the UFC sees him as a serious contender as Tito fights are always money. The big question mark is who will Chuck fight next?

Likewise Forrest Griffin, Mauricio Rua and Keith Jardine are all bunched together with less than 1.5 points separating them but more than 3 points between Forrest and Henderson. Forrest is obviously getting the next (increasingly rare) title shot. So maybe we'll see Jardine and Shogun throw down before too long.

The fast-fading but Hall-of-Fame bound Wanderlei Silva and the rising-star-who-stumbled Sokoudjou are the next plateau with each having less than 10 points.

And just like everybody else, the Meta-Rankings have one non-UFC fighter squeeking into the top 10. In this case it's the unsigned PRIDE veteran Ricardo Arona but Rashad Evans is within a point.

Rounding out the field (and remember our lists includes anyone who makes even a single top ten list)are the "we snuck into the bottom of somebody's top ten list but barely" crowd: Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Vladimir Matyushenko, and Thiago Silva.

I'll be posting the other divisions over the next few days. Let us know what you think of the Meta-Rankings.

Do you have any contact information for the fightmatrix.com guy(s)?  I don't see anything listed on their website.  I'd like to know the formula they use for the ranking instead of the vague description they have.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow
Mikey,

The method is a highly modified ELO system.

I plan on doing my own ELO system for MMA-analyst.com in the very near future with a larger database of fights, but I'm currently programming and filling the database with bouts.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Lt
One interesting thing to note...as I compiled the numbers...two media outlets (5 oz of pain and MMA on Tap) did not have Dan Henderson ranked at Lt. Heavy choosing instead to rank him where he is now fighting (middleweight).  Were Hendo to have gotten a top 5 vote from even 1 of these two sites he would be a clear cut #2.

Another thing to note is that Machida at #2 only recieved a #2 ranking from ONE site.  But the fact that he was #3 in both the Fan and Computer rankings  while Liddell was #6 by the fans but #2 in the computers, and Henderson was #2 by the fans but #5 in the computers helped Machida recover from his 5.5 average in the press.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Lt
I think a major justification for rankings is they help suggest future match-ups. Under this logic, it doesn't make sense to include Dan Henderson, Michael Bisping, etc. in LHW rankings.

If Dan Henderson were to remain LHW, he would certainly be ranked #2 for going the distance with Jackson and knocking out Wanderlei Silva.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Lt
I agree with you completely. But keep in mind, the job of the Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings is to show at a glance what the general consensus of fighter rankings is, not to rank the fighters.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow Meta-Rankings: Lt
Beyond what Nate said...if we leave Hendo off of the LH rankings then he still would suffer in the MW rankings because sites have him ranked there.  And also if we left him off then the point system gets totally screwed up.

We're not ranking...we're reporting.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow
Hendo is 1-1 as a LHW.  He shouldnt even be considered.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow
Well...several of the sites did consider him.  So we have to put him on as such.

My personal rankings have him at MW and not LHW.  But this isn't based on our ratings.

Re: Introducing the Bloody Elbow
I know Brent.  I wasnt knocking you guys, just the sites that list him.  Has the guy proven he can fight bigger opponents?  No, he's 1-1.  Nuff said.  As a MW, he's still top three.
