Tito-Machida Update

Dave Meltzer reported in the print edition of The Wrestling Observer that when presented with the Machida fight, Ortiz responded that he wanted to fight a bigger name.  I've followed up a bit on this, and apparently Tito wants to fight one of the following 3:  Wanderlei Silva, Shogun Rua, or Rashad Evans.

He hasn't outright rejected the Machida fight though, so it's still a possibility.

Re: Tito-Machida Update
It's unfortunate if it doesn't happen.  But only really unfortunate for Machida.  Tito knows that his clock is ticking, he wants to fight big fights and to be honest Machida isn't a big fight right now.  Machida could get a big boost by beating Tito, but Ortiz wouldn't benefit in most casual fan's minds from beating a fairly unknown commodity.

ding ding ding.

I'm honestly a little surprised they would even offer it.
Wanderlei sounds good.  Although getting him a "guaranteed" win first to break the streak would be nice.

Re: Tito-Machida Update
If they are booking Machida for Tito's last fight, then they must not see themselves re-signing him after the fight.  That would be the last fight on his contract.  Kind of similar to the way they are booking Arlovski against Irish Ambien Jake O'Brien. I'd assume that Tito would draw more interest on the open market than he did the last time, when nobody would go near him.  You would think Cuban and EXC would jump at the chance sign a game changer, as far as being able to draw fans and PPV buys.

As for Machida, if this guy is the real deal like  it increasingly seems he is, I say put him in against the Greg Jackson wonder twins, Rashad Evans and Keith Jardine, for his next two fights.  That way he knocks a couple of suspect draws out of title contention.

Re: Tito-Machida Update
I agree completely about Machida/Jardine. Evans is probably too much of a draw for them to risk, but Jardine has a (dubious) claim to contention after his decision win over Liddell. Machida should send him right back down the ranks.
They're clearly fucking with Tito by offering him the Machida matchup.

Re: Tito-Machida Update
Machida/Liddell is what makes sense to me, but looking at the matchmaking from a business acumen, Machida v Jardine is the way too go.  Then you hype Machida is the guy who beat the guy that beat Liddell blah blah blah.  Casual fans will take notice then.

Personally, I think Lyoto could beat Rua right now.  He will be the champ one day, if they give it to him.  He not quite ready for the new and improved QRJ though.

Re: Tito-Machida Update
Until I see evidence to the contrary, I'm gonna believe the UFC is protecting Liddell from Machida.

Jardine's claim is not so dubious. He has wins against 2 Top 5 guys, including a solid decision against the ex-champion and a knockout of the guy who's now (unfairly) fighting for the title. It makes sense to match him with Machida for #1 contender.

It's a lot like the HW situation where Arlovski beats Werdum, but Werdum gets to fight Gonzaga and Sylvia/Nogueira for the title. Blatantly unfair.

Ortiz needs to fight Wanderlei Silva.
