The new "news show" of sorts from Mark Cuban's HDNet debuted Friday. My initial impressions are generally favorable. There isn't any other show like it at the moment, but they've got to make some adjustments going forward.
First, it's over produced. There are a thousand things going on at once with no real ties among them. It's not totally clear what Bas is even doing. This isn't a commentating booth, it's a news show. He doesn't need to be there all the time unless you define his role a little more clearly.
Second, the panel was great to see, but again, what are they doing there? Kevin James even said as much. The fact is that Guy was there to promote HDNet, Chuck was star power, ditto on James. It's not that they didn't provide interesting commentary per se, but it's nothing we haven't heard a million times before.
Third, I like how they did stats, but there wasn't enough of it and there was no segment for it. They threw them up there willy nilly without really tying them to anything more concrete. Oh yeah, and if you're going to show your own rankings, you've got to a) show them longer on screen and b) explain how you got them. They did neither.
Still, though, I'm sure they'll make adjustments as time passes.
