EliteXC Adding 140, 150 and 160 Weight Classes

EliteXC President Gary Shaw announces new weight classes to improve the safety of its competitors.

"I am very concerned in the mixed martial arts world of this drastic cutting of weight," said Shaw. "Fighters can fit better in these weight classes and fight for world titles without endangering their health."

EliteXC will remove the 155-pound weight class. The company's weight classes are now: 140, 150, 160, 170, 185, 205, 265 and 265+ pounds.

Re: EliteXC Adding 140, 150 and 160 Weight Classes
Shaw continues to impress me.  I cant stand to hear a 175 guy is cutting to 155 to make weight.  Weigh ins should be six hours before fights, not 30-32 hours.
Remember the Riggs vs Diaz hospital fight?  They said Riggs weighed 206 when he checked in to the hospital.  They fought at 170. Not that that would change here, but cutting like that raises the blood pressure extensively, drops your potassium levels ( think Terry Schiavo ), and pollutes the liver.  Very bad.

Re: EliteXC Adding 140, 150 and 160 Weight Classes
The problem is same day cutting tempts fighters to fight while they're still dehydrated which can cause death. A dried out brain slams into a skull pretty hard.
Boxing moved away from same day weigh ins after Boom Boom Mancini killed Duk Koo Kim in the ring.
Cutting weight is a fact -- an ugly fact I agree but it's not going to stop.
A better alternative might be weigh ins every day for seven days before the fight...

Re: EliteXC Adding 140, 150 and 160 Weight Classes
I realize all that, bro.  I cut from 178-80 to 170 to fight, but I do that by not drinking any water from 5pm the day before the WI.  I have a small drink at 5am day of, then just weigh myself every hour.  If I'm heavy, I run, if light, I drink an 8oz glass up to about 3 hours before.  I have never felt like my health was in danger because it's not.  I think my point is KN, that with BP checks, the commissions could easily tell if a fighter has cut too much.  Weigh 'em day of, check BP.  If it's outta whack, they dont fight.  No one then could ever cut enough weight to endanger themselves, or give themselves an unfair advantage. What Franklin does, Liddell, Page, etc, is just crazy.  None would ever fight if their BP was checked thoroughly.

Re: EliteXC Adding 140, 150 and 160 Weight Classes
Isn't more weight-classes just going to make fighters drop even more in weight? I think fighters at 155 will go to 150 and after a while they might think that 145 is an option (if that class is available..)
I say the old classes should stay.

Re: EliteXC Adding 140, 150 and 160 Weight Classes
I've thought about that Emil.  Most fighters I know do cut weight, but usually its because of necessity.  I'm 180 right now, my nature weight.  I dont want to fight 185, because to me lifting to gain makes me slower, something I consider more dangerous.  So I cut to 170.  But for smaller guys, most don't want to cut from say 168 to 155.  They cant fight 170, so are forced to make a 13 lb cut.  For a 220 to cut 15 is nothing, but for a 170 to cut 155, its extreme.
There will always be fighters who will do drastic cuts, but for most they'll just find a weight class they can make without killing themselves.
