Ego or Lifestyle
While Kelly Thomas doesn't see why Rich didn't take it to the ground, I think that would've ruined his plan. He's not just trying to win. He's trying to rise to his challenger, not work around him. He believes, and I thank him for this as a fan, he has to defeat Silva the same way he was defeated. Striking.
"What? That's crazy!"
"He'll never do it!"
"It's a recipe for disaster!"
"He's running out of grills to smash!"
Yeah, yeah, I know. But I believe its the only way he'll get better, and the only way this sport will keep evolving. What Rich is doing is exactly what this sport needs. Improving his skills and application to world-class levels. I wouldn't be surprised if Rich's belief was thus:
"If I can't defeat him standing, then I don't deserve his title."
And I admire that. Whether he gets that belt again or not, he'll always be improving his game in every way. Right now, if he can get past Saturday in his heart and in his head, then he'll keep right on improving. While others avoid taking their striking past "Every Punch Must Be A Knockout Hook With No Form," maybe he'll actually develop a pro striking game.
But unless he tests it against the best, it'll never get anywhere. I'm just glad Rich is willing to get his nose busted to get there.

And after a google, I'm sincerely hoping that Kelly Thomas doesn't look like the other. Thanks for ruining my day, man.
